It doesn't fit with the family story but it is the right age (20) - Living with a brother it looks like and then no further record 1870 Jones Co. White Dist. One thing that might help your work is land records, and finding when (if) he bought land in Wise county. As has been mentioned, Wise county (in 1870) was pretty much empty, since there were so many Indian raids.
