Hi, Can you tell me if marriage records are available for the county before 1880? I have searched everywhere on the net but can't find anything earlier. The woman's name was Lucetta Green Kent and she married an unknown Clark before 1878, then had one child by him (Linnie Clark, born 1879) and by the 1880 Wise County census; he is gone and Lucetta is listed as widowed. Her last Kent child was born about 1875, so she had to have been married between 1874 and 1878. Any help deeply appreciated. Terri

It also takes back some on her parents in the file. Cross check the different files... you never know if someone else has more data than the first, and check with the submitter to compare sources. Marriage records for that time frame are lost.. but the land records are not. Thus, if he arrived in Wise county and bought land, that should show up. You might also check at the other end, for land sold there in Arkansas, or connection to other Kent families.

Terri, Also there are tax records in Arkansas. They taxed horses and cows, not just land. For example: Bannister Talley was in Hot Spring County Arkansas from 1855 to 1859 as he is listed as having been taxed for for poll tax, horses and cattle. I found this information at the State Archives in Little Rock. Terri, Sorry, we've had two courthouses to burn, one in 1883 and 1895, so there won't be marriage records before 1880.
