Dear Linda: Do you have, or know of someone that does, photos or other information? I will share my research with anyone interested. I am now finishing my masters thesis which is Company C of the Frontier Battalion, 1874-75, and commencing research on Captain Stevens Company B. I have transcribed the Company B Muster Roll, will soon transcribe the monthly reports, and am copying the personnel records, census records, and any other info. Will be searching Jack and Clay County records as soon as it drys up a little. Same trip will visit Wise County History Museum to research what they have. Need all the help I can get. Sincerely, Ray
Ray, I don't know of anyone you could contact but maybe someone on the Wise list will be able to help you. I know my GGG-GF John Mathis McCombs and some of his brothers were members of the Texas Rangers at one time. I don't know what company they served with but will look through my notes again. Good luck. Ray, it really sounds like a fascinating topic. Especially knowing that in the 1870 census, many families had left the county for safety reasons, and later came back. Would it be an imposition to post the list of names? I'd be more than happy to contribute what notes I might have on someone, if I knew who the members were.
I too am really fascinated with all this............I know that my husband's MONK ancestors were members of the Frontier Fighters from 1869-71 approx. Our part of the Monk line moved to Mason co after this time. They owned land in Wise co and would like any info that might include their name or give explanations to there many travels. I'm sure it had to do with farming and Indians!!!!!!!! Thanks, Andrea Monk Wendy Caldwell <[email protected]> wrote: Ray, it really sounds like a fascinating topic. You mentioned families leaving Wise County in the 1870's for safety reasons. I have family who left during that time. Could you tell me what the safety reasons were that caused whole families to leave? I am tracking the Nichols and Mann families and I know the Nichols moved away during that time.
