The Wise County List has so many knowledgeable people on it, that I thought I would seek you out to help me with a question. I found a record of my great grandmother's first marriage on Ancestry.com. The document is Tennessee Marriages 1780-2002. This certificate is on the page with six others with the same wording. They are dated 1874. In the certificate it states the following: That we [groom and friend/employer/relative] of the County of Obion and State of Tennessee are held and firmly bound to the State of Tennessee in the sum of Twelve Hundred and Fifty Dollars, to which payment, well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs executors and administrators, and each and every one of us, jointly and severally, by these present. I think much of that is legalize, but why would the amount be so great? My suggestion is that somehow this may be related to a purchase of land from the State of Tennessee; I would check the Tennessee Land Office or whatever they may call it and also the county of Obion tax records for the succeeding years. I have a Tennessee cousin by marriage who does genealogy and see what she says for you.
