Dear Editor, Bridgeport Police Department faced the first death of an officer in the line of duty April 2. Sgt. Randy White, with a high-speed chase in progress, was shepherding motorists to safety when the fleeing suspect veered to ram White's parked vehicle. The man reportedly told police he intended to kill the officer. Recognizing that the conduct of Chief Randy Singleton and the entire police department in the aftermath of this tragedy has been exemplary and inspirational, the Bridgeport Historical Society voted at its May meeting to salute and commend the department. We join all area law enforcement personnel in support and thanks to these public servants who stand ready to defend us with their very lives. ?
