Dear Clyde, Documents obtained by Robert (Bob) Benton of Oklahoma City show that Thomas Newton McCright was drafted into the Confederate Army on August, 26, 1862. He was assigned to Company B, 15th Regiment, Texas Cavalry and was captured by the Union Army on January 11, 1863 at Arkansas Post, located about 150 miles below Little Rock, Arkansas, on the Arkansas River, near where it empty's into the Mississippi River. Thomas's brother, Quinton, was in Company G, 17th Regiment, Texas Cavalry and was also captured at Arkansas Post. Both Thomas and Quinton were in what was called Deshler's Brigade and were deployed near each other during the battle. The death certificate said that Thomas died of Jaundice. I believe you can take that with a grain of salt. Quinton did not get sent to Camp Douglas and survived the war. Thank you for the offer of information but as you can see I have quite a lot. I also have an ancestor, Nathan Middleton, who also died at Camp Douglas. Do you happen to know where Thomas Newton McCrigh was captured? Nathan was serving at Arkansas Post located at the confluence of the Arkansa and Missippi rivers. If you are interested I will share a photo of Camp Douglas and a couple of maps of Arkansas Post. La Darla or Sue, I would like to find the dates on the grave markers in Deep Creek Cemetery, for Marion L. McCright and Ollie G. McCright. Both died very young one infant the other about 4 years old. They would be my Uncles. One other note, the marker for Thomas Newton McCright is just that, a marker. His body is in Oak Wood Cemetery, Confederate Mound, Chicago, Ill. Thomas was a victim of the infamous Camp Douglas, a Northern Prison Camp. Thanks for your help, you do a great job there in Wise County. I am seeking information about Tabitha Clementine (Paschall) Ward who is buried in Deep Cemetery along with her husband, W.E. Ward. I have two amazing stories to tell about this person that have occurred in the past three years. I am particulary interested in finding a picture of her and/or with William. This may be too much to ask considering the date but hope you can help. Thank you so much for your consideration of this. Bill Ingram 117 Shady Lane Azle, TX 76020 817-565-7375 billy.ingram@att.net
Thomas Newton Nichols was living with his mother for census of 1870 in Wise Co. Sometime after that, he married a "Gwin". Thats all I know, can anyone tell me what her name was. They had a son named George who lived in Tulia Tx. (so the story goes) I suspect they may have married in Wise or Parker Co.s. Thanks Betty
Sandra, thanks very much for your help on this. I don't know if the Elizabeth found in Dallas in the 1920 census is the right one or not. The age fits. The children of Elizabeth and husband Jesse M. Morris are: David Lee Morris, married Mary Emma Grene in Wise county Franklin Jackson (Jack) Morris married Minnie Lee McMath W.W. Morris (can't find anything on him) Mary Elizabeth Morris married James Edward Collins All were born in Haywood county, Tn. The fact that the census taker showed her to be born in Mo may or may not be relavant and may have just written down the state where James Farris was born just by assuming as such. For instance, on the Ellis Worth Morris death cert, his parents were shown as Jesse and Alice. Jesse and Elizabeth raised Ellis, but he was actually their grandson, and Alice is his wife. But there are a lot of Elizabeths out there and this just may be a coincidence and its really difficult getting a handle on a lot of these without finding a death cert or funeral home info. Sorry if I've already answered, but I get a little forgetful at times. Thanks, again. Sandra, thanks a lot for this info. There are a couple of things. The fact that the 1920 census shows MO, Mo and Mo may or may not necessarily mean anything. The census taker could just have assumed that since James Farris was from Mo, they may have just assumed she was also with asking. If its the same person as in the 1900 census, they say Ia, tn, tn, yet Ellis Worth Morris shows TN Tn Tn. I'm sure the one in the 1900 census is my gg grandmother. The children of Elizabeth and Jesse M. Morris are: David Lee Morris -born in Ten 10-17-1870. died in Sentinel, Ok 9-19-1948 (moved there about 1895 or96) F.J. (Franklin Jackson) Morris, born -9-1875 in Tn. Stayed there and died in Wise cy. Buried in the Alvord cemetery. Married Minnie Lee McMath. She died in 1928, I believe it was, and he remarried Florence. W.W. Morris--born about 1874 in Tn. I haven't been able to get a handle on him. Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie), born 11-17-1878 in Tn. Married James Edward Colling, died July 5, 1953 in Olney Tx. They moved there about 1935. Ellis Worth Morris is a Grandson of Jesse Morrisk. As per the 1880 census in Haywood county, tn, Dancyville dist, his name was shown as Ellis Worth. Jesse's daughter Martha lived in the same household then at age 29, so I kind of assumed she was his mother, but not necessarily so. Can't find any reference to a Worth then as a surname, but haven't really done much checking on that part of it. As far as the death cert is concerned for E.W, it is not correct. As I said, Jesse is his grandfather, and Alice Elrod was his wife (per wise county marriage records). I have a cousin I'm in contact with who is a granddaughter of David Lee Morris. I'll give her an e-mail to see if she is aware of any Farris's in our line. She was raised in Okla same as me (unfortunately, I live in Wisc now). There is a W.N. Morris who married Cora (or Cara) Edwards, sister of James Edward Collins. I don't know if this could be ours or not. see WilliamsColey - aqwg57, if you can access. Again, thanks for your help. Just wish I were able to go down there to check some things out in person. Facets of Fannin -? A History of Fannin County Georgia? page 229- CARPENTER FAMILY F90 ? Emanuel Morton Carpenter ran away from his father's North Carolina plantation at age fourteen, never returning, because of punishment or threatened punishment for a wrong committed by a slave, so he said. In his Bible he wrote, "Age not known." The 1850 Gilmer County, Georgia census listed his age as 20, born in North Carolina, a farmer, in the household of Letty Rawlston and her five children. He married September 22, 1852, Elizabeth Elvira, daughter of Henry and Anna (Bandy) Wikle of Gilmer. Children of E.M. and Elizabeth were William Henry Emanuel, Jesse Houston (b. 1854), and Loucratus Galveston (b. July 9, 1858), called "Crate." They lived nearby and attended the Carte cay Methodist Church. ? In the History and Biographical Record of North and West Texas, his son, Jesse, stated that the Union sentiments held by his father made him an enemy. He was forced into the Confederate Army and was unable to escape for fourteen months. He was enlisted May 16, 1862, as a private in Company D, 6th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, and remained for three years of the war. After escaping, he quickly disposed of his property and refugeed behind Federal lines. ? In Fannin County by 1880 were Emanuel Morton, wife Elizabeth, and sons Jesse and Crate. Crate was married January 1, 1880, to Sarah Jane (b. December 22, 1860), daughter of Joseph O. Lewis, who enlisted in the Confederate Army on the same day, place, company, length of service and enlisting official as E.M. Carpenter. Joseph was captured in Gilmer County October 24, 1864, and sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois, where he died April 23, 1865. His parents were John and Anna (Nancy Oliver) Lewis of Gilmer County. ? Emanuel sold his two tracts of 80 and 160 acres in Fannin County, and in 1886 left by train for Wise County, Texas. Making the trip were Elizabeth, E.M., Sarah Jane, Crate, Martha Amanda (b. November 6, 1880), Samuel Morgan, and Flora Isibel (b. September 3, 1884). Children born in Texas were Morton Lewis, Nora Elizabeth and Tempie Jane (b. November 6,1890). Shortly after her birth, their low-lying farm and home were flooded by heavy rains for miles up the creek. In caring for two children ill with typhoid fever, a new infant, and in a weakened condition, Sarah became ill and died February 2, 1891. Following her in death were E.M., on January 11, 1892, then Tempie Jane on September 24, 1893. Leaving his five children with family, Crate took his team of mules and worked three years for the Rock Island Railroad. He and Jesse bought 300 acres east of Bridge 0 t where they cleared 25 acres, planted corn, built a 14' x 14' one-room house, with dirt floor and a pole kitchen on the! back. Crate built beds, a table with legs fastened with pegs, cow-hide seat chairs, a meat box, and shelves between the beds for their scant supply of clothing. ? In 1894 Crate went to Oklahoma in a covered wagon to "fetch" Betty K. Franklin, widow with one child, who became his second wife. She gave birth March 3, 1895, to twin daughters, assisted by Crate in the absence of the late-arriving doctor. Years of exposure on the railroad led to a cough. Crate died of tuberculosis and pneumonia on January 11, 1896. ? Betty had three children and four stepchildren to care for as they continued to farm, clear more land, and dig stumps out by hand. They raised a spring and fall garden, killed and cured their meat supply. Flora, age twelve, plowed by working the plow around stumps. She helped to clean their crops then hoed for neighbors for forty cents a day where grass was taller than crops. Sacked corn was carried on horseback to a nearby mill for grinding into meal. ? Betty's mother went to visit and persuaded her to return to Oklahoma. First, Betty placed her step-children with family and neighbors. Amanda and Nora went to neighbors and later married into the family. Samuel Morgan later went to Montana and died there a bachelor in 1935. Lewis married, fathered four children before the death of his wife and infant in 1919. He married Minnie Mowery in 1926 and they had seven children. They owned a farm near the New Mexico line where they started a church in their home. Lewis celebrated his 100th birthday on December 10, 1986. ? Flora lived part time with her Uncle Jesse, caring for his children and home and attending school as work allowed. She also lived with Grandmother Carpenter who died January 13, 1901. She, Samuel and Lewis were living together when she married Hugh 1. Hartsell on August 6, 1905. They soon bought a farm, which they paid for in three years. Born there were their five children: Amy Mae (b. December 4, 1906), Opal Lavenia (b. August 26, 1911), Claude Lewis (b. June 19, 1915), Aleta Joyce (b. January 3, 1920) and Charles Franklin (b. December 31, 1925). They sold the farm and bought one in Floyd County, making the trip in the family Model T Ford. Household goods, farm equipment and animals were moved by train. The family lived there until 1960, again selling their farm and buying a ranch in McCurtain County, Oklahoma. Moving there were Flora, Hugh L., Charles and family. Flora died there on December 19, 1970, followed by Hugh L. July 22, 1972. Surviving are the five children, ele! ven grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, and two great great granddchildren scattered over several states. ? Flora said she often heard her grandfather Emanuel Morton Carpenter preach in Wise County, although she did not know if he were ordained. He talked about his war experiences. Some soldiers were without shoes, had one thin blanket, which was, spread over brush and half of it used for covering. At times the falling snow furnished the warmth. ? Submitted by Joyce Taylor ?

Sandra, thanks a lot for your help. I don't know a connection to the Farris family, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. Would you mind being more specific where you found Lizabeth in the 1920 Dallas? Dallas has so many names that I couldn't locate her just by putting her name in to search. I think I told you, she is not my great grandmother. My great grandmother is actually her older sister, but I have a cousin who also does research and I will ask her if she is familiar with the Farris name and/or has any info on them. Thanks, again. Hello Cora, I did not find your original message so I don't know what you were asking about but I read the answer that was written to you in the following message. I found Thelma Irene Waldrop Evans listed on Find-A-Grave. She was born December 4, 1934 and died December 4, 1957. This grave is located in the Boyd Cemetery in Wise Co., Texas. Maybe this would be of interest to you. _http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=evans&GSfn=Thelma&GSbyr el=in&GSdyrel=in&GSst=46&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=25179143_ (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=evans&GSfn=Thelma&GSbyrel=in&GSdyrel=in&GSst =46&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=25179143) & Glenda Ferrari In a message dated 1/16/2009 9:14:17 A.M. Sandra, thanks again. I don't know if this is the one or not (the one you found in Dallas). I don't know of any connection with the Farris family, but there may be and I can't recall or find any female names Jesse. My grandfather's name was Jesse M. Morris and he had a son named Jesse W. Morris. Jesse W. was married to Mary Beyette who just happened to be a sister of my grandmother. My grandfather was Felix Britton Morris who moved his family to Okla Indian Terr in 1896. Jesse W. moved up to Washita county, Ok about the same time as did another brother, David Lee Morris. Another strange thing about the 1900 census. On the other side of the Jessie Farris family, was Jack Morris, who just happened to be another brother of my grandfather's. He married Minnie Lee McMath, and lived and stayed in wise county and is buried in the Alvord cemetery I have no idea yet what happened to my Great Grandfather, Jesse M. They were in the 1880 Haywood county, Tn Dancyville dist, and moved to Tx a short time after that. I only wish I had the 1890 Wise county census to look at. I understand Ancestry.com is trying to rebuild them, but that will probably take years. My own grandfather, Felix Britton, came to Tx ahead of his father. He was in the 1880 Cooke county census working on the farm of Ned brothers. He probably came with his uncle who was in Titus county (I think it was) in 1880. I'll try to see If I can find a connection with the Farris family. Again, thanks for your excellent help. Cora, there is no Thelma Irene Evans on the list. there is a Joe Evans, died at age 61, January 19th, 1997 in Decatur, TX. Said he was married to Betty of Chico Texas. Said he had a brother Troy of Broken Bow and a sister, Peggy of Geranimo. There was no photograph on the obit. Is that the guy you are looking for, if so and I can retype it for you in an email.
Hi Earl, I did find this on the 1920 Dallas 30 j-pct; lived on Sunset Street or Ave. Farris, Thomas A., age 33 b MO MO MO Leona, wife age 26 b TX TX TX Morris, Lisebeth, age 71, b MO MO MO next to her name is says Mother xxxxx - can't tell if the words to the side say "in-law" The only thing that fits is her age. On the 1900 Wise county census, next door to Lizabeth and Ellis, is Farris, Jessie, head, female b Jan 1847 age 53, 11 children born to this mother/9 living; b IA TN DE ((On the 1900 Elizabeth says she is born IA)) Loven, son b April 1885 age 15 son b TX Aurther, son b July 1887 age 12 b TX Maybe this is Lisabeth on the 1920 Dallas census. What was her husband's name? ,,, On Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 6:34 AM, Earl Morris wrote: > Sandra, thanks. The age is actually correct. Ellis Worth Morris is actually her step-grandson. Her Husband, my great grandfather was married to her sister originally and she died after a number of kids (One my grandfather), he then married a 2nd sister who died (presumably in childbirth) and then he married Elizabeth. Who else can say they married 3 sisters. I can't find out what happeded to my great grandfather yet or Elizabeth. I think Ellis moved up to Vernon and he died in Pampa and was buried in Vernon where another member or two of the family lived. He may have moved with him. (actually the Ia and De as shown on the 1900 census are not correct). Thanks for your help.
