    3. Don, If the following headstone is the one you were asking about, then it can be found in the Opal Cemetery.  All the headstone photo names include the cemetery where that headstone can be found.  Williams, J.N. July 25, 1832 June 7, 1885 (Older stone - Initials are different) opal-022.jpgYou should consider contacting the Wise County Museum to find newspaper information about a death in 1885.  Typically in that period only brief death notices were given, not detailed obituaries like we have today.  However, you won't know until you take a look. The Wise County Museum will charge a small fee to find an article (if it exists) and and send it to you. http://www.wisehistory.com/ David Pitts Houston TX --- On Mon, 2/9/09, mrpostman@suddenlink.net <mrpostman@suddenlink.net> wrote: From: mrpostman@suddenlink.net <mrpostman@suddenlink.net> Subject: [TXWISE] Genealogy To: "txwise-l@rootsweb.com" <txwise-l@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, February 9, 2009, 9:13 PM I saw a picture of a headstone on your web site, and I think it is what I have been looking for for several years. 3. In response to.... Subject: Re: [TXWISE] 1880 news article Ok, have to ask: What is a "swingle-tree" ? It is not a "swingle-tree", correct terminology is a "single tree". A single tree is the device behind the horse used to draw a wagon or plow. It was usually made from oak wood (sometimes steel) approximately 24" long with metal ends shaped like eyelets. The eyelets connected to the trace chains leading back from the horse's collar. Clyde Edmonds txwise-request@rootsweb.com wrote: >Today's Topics: > > 1. 1. [TXWISE] Single Tree
    2. Shirley is absolutely correct about the Single Tree, There was a metal hook in each end of the single tree that was hooked through the tendons on of the hind legs of the hog as soon as it was killed. It was then lifted, head down, by a pulley attached to a limb, barn rafter, or whatever. A barrel of hot water was placed under the hog which was then dipped into the water and quickly removed. then the scraping was begun, followed by the butchering. This usually happened during the first cold snap of the year. Crops were in, barns were full of corn, and the syrup had been made, canning was over. Thank goodness for HEB

    2. Kathy, my husband's grandfather was one of the Tennesseeans that came to Texas after the Civil War. He was born in 1858 and lived to be 99 years and 10 months old. We have yet to find his great grandfather's burial place. I have found Samuel Patton Coffman in Parker and Wise counties after they arrived in Texas. Other family stayed in Knoxville, TN area. Would love to read the article. Faye Coffman **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. AOL Music takes you there. December 24, 1880 State News Jacksboro, Dec. 18-- A fatal affray occurred at a late hour last night at Lick Branch, fifteen miles northeast of Jacksboro. An altercation arose while attending a country dance, between a man styled DOCK PILLS (PITTS?) and his brother-in-law named MCGEE, and was brought to a close by McGee. and stabbed Pills in the throat inflicting a wound from which Pills soon afterward expire. McGee left the house after committing the murder, followed by a brother of the murdered man named PETE PILLS. This morning MCGEE was found dead about 100 yards away from his house, his skull broken by a blow from a swingle-tree, which was lying beside him. It is alleged that when Pete Pills left the house, in which the dance was held, he carried with him the swingle-tree which was found by the body of McGee. Tidings of the affray reached Jacksboro at 3:00 this morning. SHERIFF KING, with his shooting irons, was quickly in the saddle, facing a freezing northern en route to the scene of the murder where he arrested PETE PILLS who is now in jail here, charged with the murder of McGee. The parties concerned were prosperous farmers and leave families. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to TXWISE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    2. I, too, would like a copy of the article. From my reading, and from things I have been able to glean from family, I think the majority of the people who came to Texas from Tennessee is just as you said: the Civil War cost them so very much. Whether they had slaves or not, and many did not, they were almost destroyed by the laws handed down to them after the war. My great-grandparents even had their fences used as firewood by the Union soldiers. Thanks. LaFon Commander In a message dated 2/10/2009 6:19:30 A.M. Central Standard Time, kathynobles@hotmail.com writes: Carla, if you'll look in the HAMBRIGHT file at the museum, you'll see a document titled "In Memoriam," by Hiram Rice Hambright. He wrote it in 1919, about 2 months after the deaths of his parents. It's a wonderful history told to him by his father about why people from Tennessee migrated to Texas in the 1880's and about what they went through during the Civil War years earlier. He talks about Texas being a land of opportunity, free land, and that men were being imprisoned in Tennessee for debt. No one in my family was imprisoned for debt, but they had everything but their 400+ acres of land stripped of everything by soldiers from the north. I will be happy to email a copy to anyone who might be interested in reading it. Kathy Nobles Phipps P.O.
