Verma, I finally chased the link down. It is below. I need to update the searcher to reflect the new addresses. I am so sorry for the problems you had. Moving all this material and making new links has been a week long job (and I haven't done the searcher update as yet) I am headed to do it now. La Darla Janalee Garn---7/3/03 WARD, William W. was b. 1820, Pike Co., IL, d. 17 Oct 1862, Wise Co., TX. In 1844 he married Luticia Jane GIBSON in Pike Co., IL. Shortly after 1855 he took his wife and children and moved to Texas with some other IL relatives and neighbors. They settled in Wise Co., near Prairie Point. I have not been able to find him on the 1860 Census even though I know he was living there at the time. His brother-in-law is enumerated on page 332. During the Civil War William W. Ward and his brother-in-law, Ira BURDICK, along with many others were accused of being Northern sympathizers and plotting against the confederacy. The Great Gainseville Hanging, where 55 men were hung for similar "crimes", spread to nearby Prairie Point (now Rhome) in Wise Co. A large number were tried, but 5 were found guilty. William W. WARD and Ira BURDICK were among those five. William and Ira were forced to sit upon their coffins in wagons and were transported to the hanging tree at the edge of town. Ropes were placed around their necks and the wagons were pulled from under them. A sad note.. Wm's wife, Lutitia was expecting their 8th child when William died. She named him William, born 13 May 1863. With all that said, would anyone know where those 5 men were buried? Would the Historical Commission have any information on these individuals, specifically William WARD? Any help would be appreciated. Janalee Garn jjgarn@cableone.net The above transferred to my new web page as: http://wisecountytexas.info/genweb/wxyz.htm

My dad told stories of how his grandfather and great grandfather hid outlaws in their barn and at their hotel near Postoak just over the Wise co/ Parker co line. (His dad was named Jesse James Davis, uncles Jimmy Younger Davis and William Richmond Davis.) They may have known each other previously because my Davis family came from MO near where the James family lived. We did not rrealize they might be more than "stories". The campsite proves they were in the area.
