Richard: It's about 10:20 p.m. here in El Paso, and I've just read your e-mail. I've got to get to bed because I have to be at church at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow. However, give me a few days to "mull" this one over. I haven't really worked on any adoptions, as of yet. Not sure what I can do, but will try. Take care, and Have a Happy Easter, Sallie R. D.A.: From Heritage Quest I found the following: 1900 .... Jeff Davis Co, TX ....1 J-Pct Sharpe, Alfred L, 41 Nov 1858 OH-NY-OH married 6 years--farmer Kate L, wife, 26 Oct 1873 TX-SC-AL birthed 1 child, 1 living John O, son, 10 Dec 1889 TX-OH-SC (on next page) Sharpe, Lula H, dau, 2 Sept 1897 TX-OH-TX Leavell, Gay (??), sister-in-law, 20 Feb 1880 TX-SC-AL (or, possibly, Gray ??) (was married 4yrs & was at school) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------- 1910 .... El Paso, El Paso Co, TX Sharpe, Alfred L, 52 OH-NY-NY widower-- collector of customs, US govt John O, son, 20 TX-OH-TX Holland, dau, 12 TX-OH-TX ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- Again, the parents' states for the 2 censuses on the 2 children; however, this is the same family. It also depends on who gave the information to the census taker....they could have guessed vs. really knowing for sure what the information was. Hope this helps. Take Care, Sallie R. Frazee El Paso, TX binkfraze@aol.com
Sallie, my name is Richard Stracener and I live in Corpus Christi ,Tx. I just nosticed your e-mail and thought I would run this by you and see if you can do anything with it,this one is a real challenge ! . My grandmother was born in Paridise,Tx August 29,1917 . Supposidly her mother died at birth, and her grandfather raised her till he died . Approx. 4-6 yrs. later. She was put into an orphanage in Ft. Worth, and she was adopted by a family named Chaney and moved to the Rio Grande Valley where she grew up. I have been searching hi and low, I don't have a name(possibly Brown) I am currently working on this research. If you have any angles I would appreciate it. Richard P.S. this is my mother's mother
In El Paso County Census, can you find entry for the family of Alfred Lansing Sharpe. He should have had a wife names Catherine Leavell Sharpe who married him about 1895. She was one of four wives I believe he had. I would be interested what children any entry may have said he had at either 1900 or 1910. Supposedly, he was elected to the Texas Legislature from El Paso in the election of 1904. D. A. D. A. Debra: Since our FHC here in El Paso, Texas (on the Eastside) has access to both Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest, I decided to see if I could find your Robert L. Watts, wife, and family in 1900 & 1910 Texas Censuses for you. I've been doing quite a bit of tracking of my Wise County families (and their decendants) through the U.S. Federal Censuses, lately, with some success. They (mostly the descendants) didn't stay put in Wise County, but seemed to spread out into the other counties west, north, east, etc. from Wise County. But, in some cases, did eventually return after their deaths, to be buried in several of the cemeteries in Wise County. What I did find for a Robert L. and wife, Isabel... was the following: 1900 .....Johnson Co, TX.....Pct. 5 Robert L. Watts Sept 1863 36 TX-SC-VA married 12 years Isibel (Isabel), wife Oct 1872 27 TX-AL-TX birthed 5 children, 4 living Robert E, son Feb 1892 7 TX-TX-TX Lillie E, dau Jan 1894 6 TX-TX-TX Wilborn F, son Mar 1896 4 TX-TX-TX Mary E, dau Jan 1898 2 TX-TX-TX Rogers, Wm. M, Boarder MO-MO-AK ------------------------------------------------------------- 1910.....Baylor Co, TX.....J-Pct 4 Robert L. Watts, 41 (but shld be 46) TX-AL-VA married 22 years Isabel, wife, 38 TX-TX-TX birthed 6 children, 5 living Robert E, son 17 TX-TX-TX Lilie, dau 15 TX-TX-TX Frank, son 14 TX-TX-TX Mary, dau 12 TX-TX-TX Garland, son 9 TX-TX-TX ----------------------------------------------------------------- (What I found in researching in the Censuses is that the birth (or, nativity) states weren't always reported accurately...especially, as the person got up in years. The parents' states sometimes changed...guess their memories became a little fuzzy, at times. But, what was more important, was that the children and wife would match up. Also, on one of my families, between 1910 and 1920, the children aged the correct number of years; however, the parents only aged about 4-5 years. Guess they didn't want to age the full 10 years .. :-)....But, I knew it was the correct family....<grin>. ) Hope the above are your "kinfolk"...and if so, hope this helps. Take Care, Sallie R. Hello, Rosalie: My limited records on Mary Isabelle Hobson (b January 1860) reflect she is the daughter of Mary A. Hanson (b May 17, 1829; d December 29, 1875) and Riley Hobson (b February 22, 1822; d January 5, 1894). I found her parents to be buried in Sandhill Cemetery there in Wise County in a recent visit. Perhaps that might help locate her in some resources. Donna M. Debra, I have searched both 1900 and 1910 Wise County census. Robert Lee Watts and Mary Isabel Hudson Watts are not mentioned in either. Also, I checked our cemetery names, and they do not appear. Our 1910 microfilm was so dim we could not decipher some of it, so we can't say it is complete. We ordered the 3rd copy, and all were the same. Louis We already have the 1900 and 1910 census transcribed at the Wise County Heritage Museum. They are in alphabetical order with page number listed, therefore, no problem to look them up on the microfilm., also have the 1920 transcribed. Lynn For the Wise County Historical Society, Inc. and Wise County Museum we wish to say Thank You. LaDarla and Sue have done an outstanding job for Wise County. I wish we at the Society and Museum would be able to do all lookup and research of our many resources for free also, however, without the fee that we charge, the membership, and donation we would not be able to keep the Museum or our Archives going and open 7 days a week. I would like to again add our thanks for all the many things LaDarla and Sue have done in the past and now to help support the Museum and Wise County Historical Society, Inc.
