Thanks Dave, Dean and Nell. Well the hunt goes on! I have land deeds showing that John J. Prestridge owned property in Chico and I also have a record where his family sold the property. I have not found a will or any probate as of yet but I have not searched all of the records in Wise. I know that he died 2 Jan. 1899 because his niece had a hand written note in Jackson Parish LA that had been written to go into the paper there, but it doesn't say where he is buried. I feel like he has to be somewhere in Wise Co. I just don't know where! Julie
Dean and Nell, where is this cemetery located? I have lost relatives who died in Chico. They are not buried in any cemetery in Wise Co. that I can find. I have been searching everywhere for them but have not had any luck. I know the death date is in 1899. Is this cemetery anywhere close to Chico? Julie

We are now at the point of writing a history of this cemetery. This cemetery is on the Denton-Wise County line. At some point in time I heard the boundary was changed and we were wondering if at one time this was in Wise County. Seems like the Death Certificates of most of the people buried there were issued by Wise County. We were told Denton County has no records for this cemetery back past 1911. We was told the Denton Courthouse burned in 1878. This is a 1.05 acre cemetery which is being destroyed by the livestock belonging to the man who owns the land surrounding the cemetery. At one time it set on a county road but at some point in time the county commissioners closed this road. Would it be suitable for you to post this on the Wise County list so we can hear from people who have relatives buried there? In order to write a history, we have to find some facts. We can't even find a record of a cemetery committee ever existing. We asked the Denton Historical Commission for information about this cemetery, but evidently they don't have any. We can use all the help we can get. Thanks, Dean and Nell........
Julie, If the Sams-Burnett-Mennerly cemetery is on the boundary of Wise and Denton Counties it would not be close to Chico. Chico is in the NW section of Wise County and Denton County is on the east side of Wise. But, of course, "close" is a relative term, so it depends on your perspective. Sam's-Burnett- Mennerly Cemetery is located in the Drop Community, From I-35W go to U. S. 380, west to FM 156, exit south 9.6 miles to FM 1384, west for 3.8 miles, then north on Sherman Road for 0.9 miles. A wooden cow sign marks the road where you turn in to the propery that surrounds the cemetery. Landowners name is Steve Williams. We have a partial list of people buried there. Carla: Thank you so much for you note. I am happy to share freely any of the genealogical research I've done. The downside for Wise County Historical Society is that none of it took place in Wise County. We are the new ones here, having arrived only at the end of 1999. Just FYI, I have posted quite a number of genealogical works on my family and families allied to my family. They are on my personal web site. They are in the from of PDF files. You could peruse some of them and decide if you wanted to download any of them. You have my permission to lodge any of them in the archives of the Wise County Historical Society. I just know that it probably is far more than you would want. I've enjoyed looking around the museum some, but it has been perhaps three years since I've made a couple of trips. I hope to get back soon. Your friend in history and genealogy, D .A. D. A. Today I received from the Texas Department of Health a Death Certificate for James Warner Mitchum, who died at age 69 years, 4 months and 23 days on June 7, 1920 in Hood County, Texas at Glen Rose, but who was buried on June 11, 1920 at Pleasant Valley in Wise County by Harris & Harris (undertakers) of Granberry, Texas. This certificate indicates he was born January 19, 1851 in Tennessee. This birth date matches that of a James W. Mitchum born on this date in Georgia to Bartlett C. Mitchum and his wife, Nancy Caroline Camp Mitchum; however, this death certificate, (upon information given by "Mrs. J. W. Mitchum", the widow, I presume), states the deceased's father was J. B. Mitchum and his mother's maiden name was "Kimp" (which may be some phonetic distortion of "Camp"?). Members of the Mitchum family in Texas tell me their J. W. Mitchum, with this same birth date, is buried at Cumby in Wise County. Do you have any idea how we might determine whether the burial place in Pleasant Valley is consistent with the above death certificate information, or whether this death certificate represents a record belonging to a second James Mitchum? Thank you. Alta Mitchem Durden
