Hello, I wonder if there is any information about the Presbyterian Church in Wise County between the years 1880--1910. My great-great grandfather (Robert Wilshier Stanfield) was a Presbyterian preacher and had several churches, some in that area, perhaps in or around Rhome, Chico, or Aurora. Thanks for your help! -Joanne DeShong
Churches in 1890 at Paradise were Christian/Church of Christ, Baptist and Methodist. The First Christian and Church of Christ split in about 1901. The Baptist church was built in 1895 but had church at the Methodist Church in old town until then. The new Baptist Church was built in new town after the railroad came through in 1893. The Methodist Church was built first in old town with OHP Read donating land and lumber to build soon after old town was settled in 1873. The Church of Christ contiuned to have church in old town until the church house burned in about 1907. They also built a churchhouse in new town some time later. The Methodist Church was moved from old town to new town in about 1902 or 1903. Another church was located south of Paradise in the Upper Arkansas area on Robert Arnold land. It was a Methodist Church. Edna Wood VP Paradise Historical Society. I have the headstone pictures for James and his wife, Elizabeth from Sand Hill Cemetery, south of Decatur. There's also a Simon Allison buried by them. I'll send you these 3 headstone pictures in separate emails. Elizabeth died in 1939, but she isn't on the list of funeral records we have on page http://www.wf.net/~drycreek/funeral_home_records.htm ???? If you want any other headstone pictures or any funeral records let me know. HI List, Consider discovering the Wise County Heritage Museum and Archives soon. A good way to get to know the folks might be to attend the Art Auction they are having on Thursday night, June 17, 2004. Admission is free and they promise lots of paintings at reasonable prices to be auctioned. Refreshments will be served. This is a very worthy cause benefitting the musuem, which is a non-profit organization, struggling to keep and improve the old Decatur Baptist College admn. building (location of the auction) . For more information call 940-627-3732. If you can't make that one, or if you do make it and want to see more, there is a second chance to be entertained and to help a very worthy cause, also being held in the same building in the beautiful auditorium on Saturday night. Ron Hammer productions presents an evening of music. There is a charge for this one, benefitting the museum. This is a Wise County treasure, come over sometime and research your roots. These folks (most are volunteers) are doing wonders for our heritage and need your support. Thanks, La Darla Keith List Owner
LAKE BRIDGEPORT STILL RISIN’ — Lake Bridgeport stood at 832.5 feet this morning, about 3.5 feet below conservation level of 836 feet. Other weekend rainfall reports include Floyd Fuqua in Paradise .35 and Joann Tucker in Chico .30. TODAY’S FORECAST calls for partly cloudy skies with high of 93 and a low tonight of 75.
Hi Nancy, I looked for the PILGRIM name in the book BIRTH RECORDS WISE COUNTY, TEXAS 1864-1902 by JULIAN G ALLEN. There were only 3 entries. Guess you saw that Preston E. Bowdre is buried with his daughter and her husband.?? The picture of the headstone is on the web page at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~drycreek/aurora.htm There's a Historical Marker at the grave that reads: George Lawson Bledsoe Georgia native George Lawson Bledsoe (b. 1805), a carpenter and cotton gin builder, came to Texas in 1834. A veteran of the Texas Revolution and The Battle of San Jacinto, he received a pension for his military service and patented land grants in Brazoria, Cooke, Jack, Fannin, and Wise Counties. He was married to the former Ellen Bowdre (d. 1850) and had five children. Bledsoe is buried here along with his daughter Georgia and a brother-in-law, Preston E. Bowdre, Ellen Bledsoe and the couple's other four children are buried in Fannin County, probably in Bledsoe Cemetery near Dial. ----- Original Message ----- From: <LaDarlaK@aol.com> To: <TXWISE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 07, 2004 7:23 PM Subject: [TXWISE-L] (no subject) > Forwarded Message: > Subj:{not a subscriber} Wise Co. The only Pilgrim headstone we have in Wise County is one for Z.A. Pilgrim (June 8, 1875-Feb 23, 1899). It's at Pleasant Grove Cemetery #2 that in the southern part of the county, between Boyd and Azle.
