    2. Dear Sirs: On July 5, 2004 I sent an email requestinf your help in following up on a lead I received from the Texas General Land Office via telephone. I have received the written inforamtion from the Land Office and need to correct the request. The following is the text of the origial email: "Dear Wise County Texas Genealogy Enthusiasts: In exploring the "family lore" that said a several greats back Uncle John Richards was killed in the massacre at Goliad, I found a clue that led me to Wise County. I have validated that John Richards was indeed one of the victims and that the State of Texas rewarded his heirs with several hundred acres of land. In discussions with personnel at the Texas General Land Office, it came to light that the file on John Richards land grants contained a receipt for a Power of Attorney that had been checked out for use in a lawsuit in Wise County, Texas. Thus, the request for your help. Based on the conversation, I believe the previously mentioned Power of Attorney was issued to Jefferson A. Richards and George F. Patterson in 1860 and removed from the GLO file in the same year. I assume the Wise County lawsuit was filed in 1859 or 1860. The law suit would have involved the heirs of John Richards and would have likely involved his grandsons Jefferson A. Richards and George F. Patterson. The subject of the lawsuit is unknown but the suit is likely to involve land or land claims. I am a direct descendant of Jefferson A. Richards. My interest in this lawsuit is to find names of parents, brothers, sisters, and other relatives of John Richards. Would it be possible in enlist your help in exploring this clue? If there are on-line resources that I can use to help myself, I would appreciate your identifying them to me. Any help that you can provide in following up on this obscure clue will be sincerely appreciated. Regards Steve Richards P.O. Box 188 Harvest, AL 35749 Phone (256) 771-1562" The corrections involve the date of the suit refereneced above - the suit was on-going in 1873 (not 1860 as noted above). Below is clear text (to the best of my ability) of the referenced document: Included in the Texas General Land Office package was correspondence with/from Jeff A. Richards. The first page of this package was on State of Texas General Land Office stationary and was dated Austin, Texas Feb. 7th 1873: “Rec of Hon Jacob Kenneth (?) Cassin (?) Gen Land Office a certain Power of Attorney signed by Willis Richards and Green M. Richards heirs at law for John Richards Decd granted to Telmon M. Richards and Jeff A. Richards on the 6th day of Apr 1857 authorizing them to process Land Warrants Locals (?) and sue (?) the same which had or might be granted to John Richards Decd. Said Power of Attorney is withdrawn from the Land Office on order of the above named Jeff A. Richards to be used as Evidence in a suit now pending in Wise County Texas. (signed) J. W. Booth Atty at Law For J. A. Richards Over” The second page adds the following note: “Attached is also a Power of Attorney attached from Jeff A. Richards to Thos B. Clements of Waco, Tex – delegating all the power to him delegation in the form of power of atty to said Clements. (signed) J. W. Booth Again, any assistance that you might give me in following up on this family clue will be sincerely appreciated. Please feel free to contact me at any time. Thanks in advance for your consideration. Steve Richards P.O. Box 188 Harvest, AL 35749 Phone (256) 771-1562

    3. Is Dry Creek Funeral Home in Wise County? If so, I found a John Seay Day C 64 87. I believe that he is a relative and would like further information. How can I find details. Would the funeral home have a record of his relatives or perhaps someone who signed papers at his death. I don't want to try the Vital Statistics Dept. in Austin, unless I know that he is a relative. And whoever signed his death certificate might answer that question. Do you have any suggestions? 3. I'm back from Texas today, and back to work. I just wanted to say thanks for all the help here finding my relatives. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to stop in at the Historical Center there in Alvord. I spent all my time in the courthouse up north, and in Bowie. I did find Mattie and all them listed in the cemetery books, but when we went out to Elmwood Cemetery, we were only able to locate Mattie's grave. Talking with the librarian there in Bowie, she said it was possible that vandals got to the head stones. It's a common problem apparently. I did notice that Mattie's head stone looked rather new for having a 1949 death date. I also noticed her head stone said 1944, and the death certificate was 1949. Ooops :) But I guess that whoever was replacing the old stone must have had trouble reading the inscription. I also found some of the other Dromgoole's up in Oklahoma, in a small cemetery north west of Geary. Hope to get back down there again some time. I really enjoyed the visit. Except the heat and humidity are a lot worse down there than up here in Nebraska. Thanks again! And if anyone has an e-mail address for the Bowie Library, and the County Clerk forthe Court House, I'd love to send them thank you notes! There is also a mention of Ben Blanton in my book, "Thistle Hill, The Cattle Baron's Legacy" by Roze McCoy Porter, page 18. He was one of the cattlemen who lived on a ranch in the vicinity between Bridgeport and Chico, 1866. Hope this information helps you. It wouldn't be the same Ben Blanton but could be a son.
