    1. Re: [TXWISE-L] Reminder FYI
    2. I have spent the day looking through old pictures that belonged to my mother-in-law. I found a wealth of information on the backs of them but sadly two old tin types and lots of other old pictures had no name on them. All the older folks are gone and I don't guess we will ever know who they are. Faye Coffman

    1. Identifying pictures
    2. Lynn Wright
    3. I was also presented a bunch of pictures from relatives, and very few of them were identifiable, so they remain in a box in the closet where they will no doubt be thrown away by the next generation with the excuse, "I have no idea who these people are and I'm tired of them taking up space." So.......... I decided that my "bunch of pictures" would not suffer the same fate, so I set aside a complete day to label each and every picture in my bunch. Here's what I did to get this done. I took all the pictures from all the boxes, and dumped them on my desk. I went through them and tossed those that had no real significance to me or my family (duplicates, landscapes of places I can barely recall visiting, pictures of non-significant people (mostly from my first wife's circle of friends), pictures of other's pets, etc). You must be ruthless in this winnowing and throw out all that no one would care about. Next I separated them into different piles ... usually along family lines. Then I went to the office supply store and bought a box of Avery Labels #(5160). Can't recall what the cost was, but I got a box with 3,000 labels... enough to do me for a lifetime. I used Microsoft Word processor for this labeling task, so I'll describe the keystrokes that are necessary to accomplish this labeling chore. There are several word processors out there, so if you don't use Word the following won't help you much. a. open a new document b. Click on Tools then Letters and Mailings then Mail Merge Wizard c. on the right side of the screen click on "labels" d. Click "next: starting document" (bottom right of screen) e. Click "label options" f. select 5160-Address from the drop down window g. Click OK h. You are now presented with a blank document with lines dividing the columns and rows (30 labels on each screen) i. look at the first picture on the first pile and type the description in the first label (upper left corner). Include as much information as you know about that particular picture, subjects, date, occasion, etc. If there is more information than will fit on the label, change the font for this label to accommodate the additional information. I'd suggest no smaller than 8 points. j. Upon completing this label, press the TAB twice in order to move the cursor to the second label, which will be to the immediate right of the first label. k. Lay the first, and subsequent pictures, aside placing them face up. This will make affixing the labels easier when you're finished with this project. l. Go through every picture, entering a description, and if you know very little about the picture, at least enter some information like: "came from Grandma June's box of stuff. Subjects unidentified at this date," then insert the actual date in place of the word "date." m. After you have completed 30 labels, Word will automatically "turn the page" and you'll be presented with a new set of thirty labels. m. After you've identified each picture or document, look at the bottom of the screen to see how many pages you have typed, and insert enough blank label sheets into your printer and hit the print button. Now the satisfaction part..... take the labels and stick them on the back of the pictures and put them away and you'll feel so proud of yourself, knowing that from this date forward, when you have pictures to put "in the box that lives under the bed," you'll know to write the description on them before putting them away and you'll never get behind again! 2. I hope everyone will take time to do this valuable service for those who comes after us.... La Darla Label, Label, Label By Angie Telepenko The best thing you can do for future generations is to clearly label photos with the date, place (if relevant) and, most importantly, the names of the people in the photo. My grandmother has a large box of photos that are all more than 100 years old, and we know they were my great-grandmother's relatives, but very few have names on them, and there is nobody now alive who could Identify these people. It is frustrating because most of them are in very good condition and they could be a wonderful resource, but nobody knows who they are!

Robert Gaines Smith died in Wise County November 14, 1915. Their children were Elizabeth “Lizzie” Smith Canfield, James P. “Jim” Smith, Julia Esther Smith Bond, Lawrence Orr “Bud” Smith, John Thomas Smith, Robert Lewis Smith, Jesse Harrison Smith and Allie Ola Smith Dodds. My ggparents, Andrew Goodman Bond and Julia Esther Smith Bond, had a son Walter born in TX in 1885. His older brother Bob was born in AR in 1885. Andrew Goodman Bond stated in an affidavit in 1930 that he had been a resident of Oklahoma continuously since 1887. Therefore, it seems likely that They joined Julia Esther’s parents and other family in Wise County for the birth of Walter. If you have any information on these people, or suggestions on how I should prpoceed with my research, I would appreciate you assistance. Sincerely, Leslie A. 2. David E. Pitts
    3. Veronica, There is a little more information on the marriage certificates for some of the years, but parents aren't listed. The book I'm working on now is Book 4. It has the ministers name written in long hand, also the date that the license was issued, the date of the marriage, the date it was received back, and the date it was filed. The name of the bride and groom are listed twice. Sometimes those names are different which causes me to make hard choices on which name to list. I think there are witnesses listed. I don't remember if book 1a had all this. It could have had less information on it, I just don't remember as that was last year when I looked at book 1A. Your best bet is to order a copy of the certificate if some of these things would be of interest to you. There are thousands more marriages that I need to index, so I can't be doing lookups or I will not get the new indices completed. You can find out the cost of the certificate and how to order it from the Wise county site. Just look forCOUNTY CLERK CONTACT Information-- on http://www.rootsweb.com/~txwise/wise2.htm A less expensive way to view these data is to order the microfilm from the Mormon Church and have it sent to your local Family History Center. It will cost you $3.25 to use the reel for 6 weeks. If you live close to Decatur or Salt Lake City, you can view the data free. 3. Hi everyone, My daughter and I visited Decatur last weekend and took a tour through Oaklawn Cemetery. I am always amazed at how this place seems like a different part of the country with its cedar that surrounds and grows within the cemetery itself. Though in the fall the tall grass seems to take over all cemeteries in this part of Texas the place is still wonderful. The Paradise cemetery is also in bad need of mowing. I drove up the hill south of the square and witnessed the new look of the museum. My! My! What a difference and I love the angel in the bell tower. I drove to view the back and it is almost as pretty as the front. Good work! I can't wait to visit the inside to see what all has been done. Wise County history needs to be preserved and there is no time like the present. Edna Wood-VP Paradise Historical Society

    1. FYI-Label and save for future generations
    2. Creating Picture Albums By Wendy Whipple Here's how my family has dealt with sharing photos. Years ago, my grandmother made three photo albums for her children. The albums contained photos of them as children, as well as children they had. When there was a single photograph of something all three should have, like a great-grandparent, Grandma had copies made. She also labeled the photos as best she could (some of the photos were 40 years old or more, and she couldn't remember everything). She died a few years after compiling those albums, and we are all grateful to her for having done it. Old photos are precious to everyone in the family. They are also in many cases fragile. I personally believe that a collection of old photos should be scanned and archived on CD anyway, and why not pass out copies of the CDs while you're at it? That way the decision is a little easier. The photos can be divided like Grandma did, with all photos pertaining to a single family member going to that person, and others copied and shared with everyone. * * * Word of Caution on CDs By Diane Hall-O'Dell I've read in photo trade journals that the life expectancy of current CD disks stored in home or office is 30 years. Printing photos from the scanned images for long-term viability may be advisable. **** Previously published in RootsWeb Review: 29 September 2004, Vol. 7, No. 39.

    1. FYI Marriages
    2. Hi List, While I was sorting and doing the HTML for the latest list of marriages David E. Pitts sent for our web page, I struck GOLD! I have searched high and low for the marriage record of my paternal grandparents. I had reviewed the indexes of the Wise County marriage records for 10 years time span. No luck! Had about decide they eloped or were married in another county. Didn't find them in either Parker or Jack. I had about given up. Well, guess what?? Somehow they were not listed in the index of the record books, but since Dave abstracted the records, THERE THE MARRIAGE record was! I am so excited. (Never trust the indexes completely)... And Dave, I thank you so much, again, for what you have done for our web page...and now for my own personal research. La Darla
