I love this. So all of us with mysterious family members (see my other post) can possibly attribute them to aliens?! Does anyone know anything about the two hotels in Aurora? My grandmother gave me a lovely gold pin with a big garnet in it. She said her father found it below the front steps of a hotel (which she said he ran for a while). It looks very Spanish. Very old. But I've never been able to find out about the hotel. My greatgrandfather was a VERY mysterious person....later in his life he deserted the second family while they were living in KC (circa 1911) (THEY thought he had died on the way to work!) and then he re-appeared to the children of his first marriage. I have heard from the second family that he was a gambler and I wouldn't doubt if this pin didn't come from a card game instead of the hotel steps.... My grandmother was born in 1883 in Rome, TX. His name was Joseph Worth Ray. The mysteries I discovered in his life story were responsible for all of my interest in genealogy. Only a few years ago the descendants of the second family found me and learned that he had just walked out on that family. Unfortunately I may never find out what caused him to do that, or where he went for 9 years. But through the efforts of a friend, I did finally get the probate papers for his father and learn the name of his grandfather. Congratulations to Aurora for the article in the Houston Chronicle on Feb. 28, 2007. There is a long article about a supposed alien who crashed into a windmill in Aurora in 1897. I had never heard the story and am sure there are lots of people in Wise County that also have not heard about it. The article mentions Rosalie Gregg and the Wise County Heritage Museum also. I found her funeral record to send you. I didn't find a death certificate. ??? This has date of death as April 26, 1917 and cause of death as "poisoning". ??? I am searching for information on Dewitt Talmadge Eddins and Lillie May Caraway. They were married and her death date is the same as her marriage date. AT this rate, she was 23 years old at time of death. She was a daughter of Simeon Caraway and Margaret Elizabeth Carter. I wonder what happened to her. She was born in Wise County, Texas. I would appreciate any information on the two. I am related to Simeon and Margaret (Carter) Caraway. Respond to the the Wise Co. web site or to me at [email protected] Loretta Caraway Thanks
Sue - thanks for sending all the "Brown" information - wasn't hard to rule out those two death certificates due to the "men of color" - LOL I'll just add all the information to my "need more information" file and look into it when I get to Wise County later this year. We were there a couple of years ago and the Museum has a wealth of information in those file cabinets so hopefully I will find something more - did look at the Brown file last time but I may have overlooked something. Thanks for all the information..... Wil ......... Warning to all U.S. genealogists! *Two rules published in the Federal Register on Monday, February 26, 2007, relate to fees for reproductions of records at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). In the case of Civil War pension applications, the proposal is for a 338% increase! Page 8327 contains a proposed rule revising fees for reproductions to cover NARA's costs for providing copies. On page 8279 is an interim final rule removing fee schedule fees for the reproduction of records of other Federal agencies stored in NARA records centers. The proposals are written in the finest governmental "legalese" language. However, it is obvious that the proposal is to *INCREASE* all fees. No surprise there, right? Here is the list: Type of record Order form Proposed Fee Passenger arrival lists NATF Form 81 $25.00 Federal Census requests NATF Form 82 $25.00 Eastern Cherokee applications to the Court of Claims NATF Form 83 $25.00 Land entry records NATF Form 84 $40.00 Full pension file more than 75 years old (Civil War period). NATF Form 85 $125.00 (a 338% increase from the present fee of $37.00!) Full pension file more than 75 years old (non-Civil War) NATF Form 85 $60.00 Pension documents packet (selected records). NATF Form 85 $25.00 Bounty land warrant application files NATF Form 85 $25.00 Military service files more than 75 years old NATF Form 86 $25.00 Both rules are open for public comment until April 27, 2007. There's much more information available in the Federal Register. The link to the proposed rule is: http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/01jan20071800/edocket.access.gpo.gov/2 007/E7-3160.htm <http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/01jan20071800/edocket.access.gpo.gov/ 2007/E7-3160.htm> The link to the interim final rule is: http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/01jan20071800/edocket.access.gpo.gov/2 007/E7-3162.htm <BR><BR><BR>**************************************<BR> AOL now offers free email to everyone. At our genealogy meeting last night, we learned that the microfilm for the death certificates, up to 1976, I think, is available for purchase from the state at $30 per roll. Perhaps your members or others wishing to research in Wise county would donate money for you to purchase these and have them for use. Just a thought. You have a wonderful service for us. We have a few images of certificates from the 1800's, but the biggest part of ours start in about 1903. We have numbers 1-3400 at this time. You can get those older (delayed certificate numbers) for $22 each from the Wise County Records Office. Address below. Back in the early part of the last century, overcrowded orphanages in new york would send orphans to farming communities in other states in an effort to find them homes. if you would like to know more about them check out www.orphantrainriders.com it helped me a lot ROBERT HEMBREE <[email protected]> wrote: WHAT IS THE ORPHAN TRAIN? Here is information from the Federal Trade Commission: The Truth about Cell Phones and the Do Not Call Registry Despite Re-Circulating E-mail, It is Still Not Necessary to Register Cell Phone Numbers As the number of phone numbers on the National Do Not Call (DNC) Registry surpassed 139 million, the Federal Trade Commission today reiterated that despite the claims made in e-mails circulating on the Internet, consumers should not be concerned that their cell phone numbers will be released to telemarketers at any time in the near future. In addition, according to the agency, it is not necessary to register cell phone numbers on the DNC Registry to be protected from most telemarketing calls to cell phones. The truth about cell phones and the DNC Registry is: a.. Contrary to the e-mail, cell phone numbers are NOT being released to telemarketers, and you will NOT soon be getting telemarketing calls on your cell phone. b.. There is NO deadline by which you must register your cell phone number on the Registry. c.. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers are barred from calling consumers on their cell phones without their consent. d.. The national associations representing telemarketers have stated that their clients do not intend to start calling consumers' cell phones. e.. There is only ONE DNC Registry. There is no separate registry for cell phones. f.. The DNC Registry accepts registrations from both cell phones and land lines. You must call from the phone number that you want to register. If you register online, you must respond to a confirmation e-mail. g.. While the telecommunications industry has been discussing the possibility of creating a wireless 411 directory, according to the FCC, even if a wireless 411 directory is established, most telemarketing calls to cell phones would still be illegal, regardless of whether the number is listed on the federal government's National Do Not Call Registry. For More Information To learn more about the National DNC Registry and the rules that enforce it, visit the FTC at www.ftc.gov or the FCC at www.fcc.gov. For more information about a planned "wireless 411" directory, visit http://www.qsent.com/wireless411. The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them.
