Forgot to say that when we bought our burial plots at Sunset Cemetery (Montague County) they had to be recorded at courthouse at Montague. ----- Original Message ----- From: Sandra Jenkins<mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 23, 2007 6:42 PM Subject: Re: [TXWISE] Chico information There might be a cemetery association. ps... http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=wksmith&id=I0124 Shelby, this is the file that I was looking at. I was just playing there some more, going back a few generations on the William Alexander (w Nancy Dean), HIS father and siblings, so forth. I see that the name George does run hot and heavy in that family, and there are male lines that are unaccounted for. And it does go back into Virginia (as your George mentions his father being born in VA). Gut instinct. Keep your shovel handy.
Shelby, just a quick response (will send more later)- I went over to rootsweb, for a search of some of the Alexander families in Jones county, and did run into the same entry that you located. That person (who is working that family) was kind enough to give details on his work, and comments about the brother George, who is with the family in 1870. Per that file... I "clicked back" to the father of that William (wife Elizabeth). He shows that the father was another William, who died in Jones co in 1879; that there is a family Bible with the names, AND the brother George that you see, was in fact a George W., who married and remained in Georgia. He was also thorough enough to include 1860 for this family... sure enough, the census at that time includes GEORGE W., who is age 10. I use the files at rootsweb often, knowing that many of them are not backed up by good work. This file (in my opinion) is one of the better ones, where the submitter makes sure to explain his sources and conclusions. And it would seem that Jones County George is definitely NOT your man. Sorry on that. For the rest (had to go back and review your earlier postings)... You mention Civil war, but I don't see George in an index for CW pensions in Texas. The index is clear to caution that it does NOT mean someone did not serve in the War, just there is no record of a pension. Interesting comment about the button- my inclination is that he certainly could have served, but the jacket might have been one he picked up along the way, maybe from someone who had been killed. Those were HARD times. I worked one family in Miss, and in 1870, 3 of the brothers had died, and the kids from a 4th brother were scattered in several different homes. You are fortunate about what was preserved. I don't think you should discount what is said. The mention of step mother makes me think that mom #1 died young, dad remarried and wife 2 also died young, and dad himself is possibly dead. Really a challenge, but not impossible. Your George would be about 10 in 1860 and that is pre war. So still very possible to pin him down then.
Thanks Sue. I will give it a try! Julie ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
There was Dennis B. Alexander's Funeral Home in Chico. We don't have those records, but that was in the 1920's to 1940's. Our Wise County death certificates start in 1903. I can't think of any place in Chico that would have old records. I guess you could ask at the public library. It's there on the square. That's Cumby Cemetery. See page http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~drycreek/cumby.htm I don't see anything on John J. Prestridge. Guess the headstone has been lost, or none was set. ???? Julie Thank You! ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
It is across the street from the Courthouse in downtown Decatur. It's on a corner. When you walk in there is a counter, and to the left of that is a doorway that you go through and that is where all of the bound books of records are. From probate to civil suits to land records. You will be overwhelmed! They are open Monday through Friday. If you want to have a copy made, you take the book to the lady at the desk and she will make copies of the documents for you. I think they are $1.00 a page. Julie ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Thanks Julie When you say records office....Is this in the courthouse? County Clerks office? Is there a fee to look and can I go look anytime of the week day? ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Judy, I was able to find the deed to a piece of property that was owned by my GG Grandfather John J. Prestridge in Chico at the Records office in Decatur. I have never been able to find a will or any probate for him but this piece of property appears to be a business location on the square in Chico. It was sold by his heirs and it lists all of their names on the deed as the sellers. There are tons of land books at the Records office. You have to pretty much pick a book in the time frame that you are looking for and see if the name you want is in the index of that book. I am sure that there are more deeds for J.J. Prestridge but the day that I was there, I ran out of time. At some point, I am going to have to go back and do some more digging. But that is exactly what it is. You just have to go through each book and look in the index. There are hundred's of books. Julie ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Can someone give me a little help with finding out information for people who at one time owned land? What would happen if someone died with out a will. I am still searching for TF Cox.....Thomas Franklin Cox. I believe that when he passed he owned land in Paradise and that the person living next to him was Easley. Sometime after his death Ann (Anemirah North) Cox married Mr. Easley and they had one son George Easley. Within about a year of the birth Ann passed away. TF & Ann had several children and if you look at the 1900 census you will find The Easley living next door to the Cox family this was after the death of Ann, I am guessing that Mr. Easley moved back to his place with his boys. And the Cox girls along with one son John Cox lived next door. Baby George is with Mr Easley. I Believe the property to be off of 114 in Paradise close to where the Old Holt place use to be.. I have TF & Ann and children on cesnus records in 1880 ,1890,1900...unable to find 1870 Also from birth records of the children I know they lived in Cooke county and in Cottondale before living in Paradise. I am looking for ideas of how I might find information on TF Cox and hope that the ownership of land might help. The story I have been told is that he worked his self to death clearing this land for his family. Let me know if you ideas of where I can look for further information.? Wendy - is there anyone you know in Wise Co. that I could pay to look up the name - also I need to know what you think about a George Alexander that I found in Georgia in 1870. It doesn't fit with the family story but it is the right age (20) - Living with a brother it looks like and then no further record 1870 Jones Co. White Dist. But this would totally negate all the family history of George. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Wendy Caldwell Sent: Saturday, April 07, 2007 10:15 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [TXWISE] possibility for whereabouts of George HenryAlexanderin1870 Shelby... One thing that might help your work is land records, and finding when (if) he bought land in Wise county. As has been mentioned, Wise county (in 1870) was pretty much empty, since there were so many Indian raids. Of course, land records are very extensive, and these are not online. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
I am looking for information on John J. Prestridge my GG Grandfather who died Jan. 2, 1899 in Chico. I found a land deed where his wife and grandchildren sold a piece of property of his on August 25, 1899. It is described as Lot 2 Block 5 and was a 40 wide by 80 foot deep piece of property on the town square. Are there any city offices left in Chico that might hold some kind of death records or any other kind of records that might not have been filed with the county? He is not listed as being buried in the Chico cemetery. As we were leaving Bridgeport yesterday we came down a county road that led to Chico and beyond that, before you got to 287 there was another cemetery sign at CR 1589 I think is what it was. Can anyone tell me what this cemetery is? I just want to find out where he is buried and more about him. I can find out lots of info about John Milton Prestridge and his wife Elizabeth. But he was only a distant cousin of John J. Prestridge. Is there anything hiding in the town of Chico itself that might give me more information??? I am trying to find a marriage documentation for my ggfather, Wiley Taylor Therrell. I know he was married to Grace Wilson in Denton, Tx. in 1886. However, before that he was married to a Alice Tomme, who is the mother of my grandfather, John Austin Therrell, b. 1880. Do you have a marriage certificate for W. T. Therrell and Alice Tomme in Wise County. Thanks in advance, Nancy Therrell Wilkins
I noticed on your web site of Wise Co. that the probate records had been transcribed by David Pitts. Is is possible to get a copy of one? I am interested in the one of my great grandfather, Nathaniel Tabner. It is listed as follows: Tabner, N. Vol. 4, Pg. 390 #1680. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Ruby Wenzel [email protected]
