I’m looking for information about an ancestor who reportedly died an accidental death while constructing the present Wise County courthouse. My grandmother often mentioned that her grandfather, Elmer P. Freeman, died while working on the crew, but, I have nothing to substantiate that idea, what happened, or where he was buried. 2. Mary Ann, I have to agree with Joyce and I still think that something is wrong. If William Emmet Johns was born in 1872 and lets say he got married when he was 16, then that would be 1888. Lets say his first child was born the same year of 1888. Then this first child would have been born the same year as the granddaughter you speak of that was 12 years old. So William's child would have been a newborn when he had William's grandchild. I think you need to look over your records again. Perhaps the 12 year old child was the child of William Emmet Johns and not the grandchild, although that seems highly unlikely too. Maybe that child was a niece. 1. [TXWISE] Lucetta Green Kent Clark Schaal (was question about marriage records)
    2. Terri
    3. Thank you all for your quick responses. I am very disappointed to hear that there are no marriage records for this time period. I have already searched the Hempstead County courthouse (I live nearby) for information, and I haven't found any clue that would lead me to the first name of Lucetta's mysterious Mr Clark (my great-great grandfather). Lucetta Green married Thomas John Kent January 17, 1867 in Hempstead County, Arkansas. Their first child, Charles H. Kent, was born in Arkansas in 1868. Their second child Lucetta Kent was born in Texas in 1872, and their third child, John Kent, was born in Texas in 1874. I assume that Thomas John Kent died between conception of last Kent child -John, in 1873, and the marriage of Lucetta to a Mr. Clark sometime prior to July of 1878. Linnie Clark was born April 30, 1879 in Texas. So that gives me a window of approximately 5 years- 1873-1878. On the 1880 Wise County Texas census, Lucetta, the three Kent children and my great grandmother Linnie Clark are living with Lucetta's sister- Margaret F. Green Dickson. Next door is the Jessie B. Clark family. For all I know, Lucetta might not have lived for any great period of time in Wise County. She might have been in another county, and moved to her sister's house when her last husband died. It was a long shot to think she might have married in Wise County, but I was hoping!! Lucetta & kids all moved back to Arkansas (Howard County) by about 1883 when she met her third and last husband, Otto Schaal. I will have to make a trip to Wise County to check out land & tax records & maybe a probate record for Thomas Kent and/or Mr. Clark. Thanks again for your suggestions, Terri

    3. Terri, Also there are tax records in Arkansas. They taxed horses and cows, not just land. For example: Bannister Talley was in Hot Spring County Arkansas from 1855 to 1859 as he is listed as having been taxed for for poll tax, horses and cattle. I found this information at the State Archives in Little Rock. 3. Terri, We have abstracted all the marriage records that we have found for Wise county. They start in the fall of 1881. See: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txwise/wise2.htm and look for "past Wise Marriages" The "Red Book" shows the date that marriages started to be recorded for each county. Some are earlier than 1881 and some later. "Ancestry's Red Book" was edited by Alice Eichholz, by Ancestry Publ Co. P. O.
