There are so many stories some of the Miami, Bluejacket, Vinita area.... and lots of Missouri Pioneers... a great read and a good way to get a picture of the area and the times *One of the most valuable research tools for the state has just been posted on the web:* *Western History, Indian-Pioneer Collection, searchable, scanned images* http://digital.libraries.ou.edu/whc/pioneer/ =================================================================== Interview with Luther H. Sharp Kiowa, Oklahoma Charline M. Culbertson, Field Worker June 24, 1937 LIVE IN INDIAN TERRITORY My family and I moved to Chickasaw Nation in 1899. We located at what was called the Byrd's mill which was a gin, flour and sawmill owned by Frank Byrd, a half-breed Chickasaw Indian. We had no particular reason for coming to this certain point only that we left Missouri on account of sickness as we were living in a very undesirable place for our health. I was born in Dent County, Missouri, being reared and married there. Or Interview with Jake Simmons As given to L. W. Wilson, Indian Pioneer History Wilson, L. W. Research worker This interview covers all the information known to Jake Simmons, which includes his personal activities and of that revealed to him by his parents and grandparents. His good wife, Rose Simmons, assisted him as far as possible in substantiating exact locations, dates, etc. Mr. Simmons states that he was born at Boggy Depot on the fort Washita River near Fort Washita in the month of September, 1865, and that he is now near 72 years of age. His wife Rose Jefferson-Simmons is now 79 years of age and was born in the Red River country of the Indian Territory. .... some of the topics he talked of. Migration before the Civil War Need of Government for the settler The white settlers had troubles all their own. Some could not make a living on the places and had to give it up; others would send some member of their family back home from where they came to work and get a grub stake for those here in the t e r r i t o r y . Division of Oklahoma Territory Cherokee strip opening in 1893
My husband is working in CA near where the fires in Tahoe are. The people out there would love some of this water. He told me that if I see that guy with that big boat coming down the street to get in.... ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Joanne, this was my original post which got all of the reminiscing started. I just saw a report about the horrible floods you are having there in Wise Co. near Boyd. I hope that everyone is safe and our thoughts and prayers are with you. The report was actually on the Weather Channel so Wise Co. made national news! Apparently you have a Weather Channel reporter in Wise Co. right now. Julie ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Julie, I am sure ready for a fish fry, grab one of those catfish out of the mailbox. lol- and LaDarla, I am always grateful for the work you do, but also for being flexible that you don't freak if we go a bit off topic. Using this as a springboard, a friendly reminder: what would YOU do if you got hit by sudden flooding? or forest fire? or, if (God forbid) something happened to you next week? Are your files in order? backed up? (if I ever use a "tag line", it should read 'are YOUR genealogy files backed up?") We had to move a year ago, when the main water line under our house broke, and was not covered by insurance. I still don't know where all my files/ info wound up. But I am working on it.
Becky, I just saw the Weather Channel report on the 19 inch rain in Marble Falls. Try and stay on top of your table to stay dry. Be careful. I have a great bass boat that I need to sell, it will work in the flood waters too! It just rained again here in Wichita Falls! Julie And make sure to have your rowboats handy!!! HI Wendy. Nellie ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Reading the e-mails I have received regarding the floods back in 41 leaves me the impression that you are flooding in and around Bridgeport. I haven't heard any news stating this. Can you two fill me in. The weather news here is mostly about the Tahoe fires here in California. I hope the rains will be over by the middle of July. We will be visiting my sisters in Dallas at that time. Joanne Hartsell Wiley Joanne

Hi, Royce, I remember that flood, too. My dad was working in Ft. Worth at that time. I remember driving to the river bridge on the Decatur highway and seeing my dad wade across the bridge in waist-high water, holding his suitcase over his head. Someone picked him up on the other side. As I recall, he wasn't alone. Virginia Sensibaugh Fincher R Royce Raven wrote: >Tommye, > >The year that you remember was 1941. Tommye, The year that you remember was 1941. That was the first time the lake was full. I remember that we could not get out of Bridgeport for about a week. The roads were under water all around Bridgeport. Turkey Creek was really flooded. I remember many years ago, it must have been 1938 or some time later, when the water was running over the old spill way at the lake and they were afraid the dam was going to break. We lived on the West side of Bridgeport and we went to stay with my aunt who lived in the higher part of the town, on the East side. I pray that everyone stays safe.
