Paige, I show a Minnie Farmer that died in Wichita County on Aug 26, 1930 Cert # 42221. Could that be her? The marriage certificates that we have indexed on the Wise County web site do not have any additional information like parents or witnesses. It does have the minister's name and the clerks name and the date of the license, the date of the marriage and the date the marriage certificate was filed. Moreover it has the name of the bride and groom twice. Sometimes the names of the bride and groom were very difficult to read because the clerk wrote like my sister. If you know what she is saying there is no problem, but all the m,n,i,o,a,r, and s are written the same. Also the t's are not always crossed. In short it is very difficult at times. So if you think there is a possibility that I mis-indexed a name you may want to contact the county clerk and get a copy. The microfilm I used went back to Salt Lake City months ago. Have you found your great grandmother listed on any census? There are a few birth records before 1903, but the state didn't require them until then. If her last name isn't one that you've seen before you might also check the last name TEAGUE----it might have been misspelled on the license. Checking the last name out might answer some questions. Just a thought! Carol This is a copy of the letter I received from my sister that lives in Nocona, Montague co. Texas. She searched the newspaper for George. She is going to look for Elizabeth this week, if she can. She is a volunteer at the Library in Nocona, and because of her husband and also her health sometimes she does not get to go in every week. I am going to be out of town this week, however, when I get back I will let you know if she finds anything. Sorry I know it seems like it is taking a lot of time and I guess it is, but I hope you will be patient with us. Carla Womack, Volunteer Wise County Historical Society, Inc. P. O. Box 427 Decatur, Texas 76234 [email protected] [email protected] My home email Carla, I did find Mr. Haynie buried at Perrytown. His death date was Feb.5, 1906. Our newspaper films start March 22. It seems it is always that way when I am looking for an obit. Wish I could have been more help. But do call again. Sorry, wrong Nichols. My Nichols came from Tennessee & Mississippi to Texas. William B. and Esther Kuykendall Nichols were the parents of the Nichols children who lived in Wise County and married into the Mann family. Most of them left Wise County in the 1870's and I had wondered why. Aurora Cemetery is online on page http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~drycreek/aurora.htm On that page there's some pictures, directions, and the text of the 2 historical markers that are there. All of the headstone information is mixed in with the other Wise County data. You should be able to get all the information you want on Capt. George W. Stevens at the WC Historical Museum. I know there is an article and picture in the first Wise County History Book that was published and they had a program on Capt. Stevens at their historical meeting last month. You just need to talk to Rosalie Gregg or her assistant, they are great. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of ray l heinsohn Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2007 8:50 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [TXWISE] re Tx Rangers Co B Dear Joyce: Would be interested in anything on Captain George Stevens. My G-Grandfather F. N. Raymond (Francis Newton Raymond)was a lst Lt. in Capt. George W. Stevens Wise County Rangers. He served for 4 months (Nov 26, 1873 until Mar 26, 1874). This information came from the Ranger Muster Roll. Mr. Raymond was born in New York in 1849 and was married to Martha Jane Start, who was the daughter of Martha Ann Jennings Start. My GG-Grandmother, Martha Ann Jennings Start was also the sister of Thomas Jennings and Henry Jennings who were also in the Wise County Rangers. Also, Capt. George W. Stevens was a brother to my GGG-Grandmother (Ann Pierce Stevens Jennings. Hope this might help you. This in part explains the position Montague County took when voters rejected secessionqv 86 to 50 in 1861. The 849 residents, including thirty-four slaves, may have been more concerned with preserving their lives than the union. If Texas joined the Confederacy, federal troops would withdraw from the Red River area. Government soldiers provided the only protection from Indian raids, and their removal would leave the underpopulated county exposed to attacks from Indians who far outnumbered them. The next fifteen years confirmed their fears, as Indian raids forced farmers to abandon their homes. In 1863, for example, an Indian attack wiped out the community of Illinois Bend. The end of the Civil Warqv did not resolve the problem. Bands of Comanche and Wichita Indians continued to harass the county until the mid-1870s. As a result of these raids, in 1870 only 890 residents had settled in the county. During the first few years of the 1870s, however, an organized effort successfully drove the Indians from the county, allowing the governor in 1878 to pronounce that Montague County was no longer a frontier county. As the number of Indian raids decreased, the number of settlers increased. By the early 1880s the population was 11,000. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
