My mother and dad, Edith and Lloyd Huff, resided in Wilbarger County most of their lives. Do you, by chance, know where "Wilburn Ranch" is located in or near Wilbarger County? I have been unable to locate it. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your assistance, Suzan Shearer sshearer@flash.net

The following letter appeared on a family surname list to which I belong. I would like to see all of us working to preserve these old cemeteries. I have also seen some of them destroyed, and am always saddened by such destruction. Joann The letter I am forwarding to you speaks for it's self... Emailing Mr Muncrief at mudman@brightok.net that you are FOR changing the vague antiquated laws will show lawmakers that there is BACKING for this cause.........OUR CAUSE! Thanks for your time Carolyn Mackey Byrum Subject: Grave desecration Carolyn, My name is Dennis Muncrief. I live in Sulphur, Oklahoma. I just read your cemetary registration of Dripping Springs and the part about the farmer wanting to graze cows. He must be desperate for grass if he needs the 4' x 6' spot where your grandmother is buried. Recently a farmer decided to build a barn in Marshall County, OK. Unfortunate a small cemetary was where he needed to build it. This "man" simply scrapped away the stones to make room for the new barn. Unfortunately for me, the cemetary was where my relatives were buried in the mid 1800's when they came to Indian Territory. The family was livid to say the least. The barn is very nice. This cemetary was on private land that was donated 100 years ago by the, then owner, for a cemetary. Generations of families were buried there with the understanding it would always be a cemetary. The current law says that the owner of private land where there are cemeteries can do anything he wants with it. Now if you are an Indian, there are federal laws against this 'grave robbing'. Isn't stealing the land where ancestors are located grave robbing? A friend of mine in California told the story of a cousin that went to a cemetary in Grady County, Oklahoma to visit the dead relatives. When she arrived, the farmer was bulldozing the grave stones into a ditch. When she protested, he pulled a gun on her and threatened to shoot her. She went to the Sheriff and he told her there was no law against this practice. The point of this letter is to tell you that there are many who feel as you do. We need to organize. I have a friend in Washington State who is drafting a letter that I plan to send to legislators in every state making it a felony to destroy graves or grave markers that were placed in antiquity or of recent pioneers such as Oklahoma pioneers. There were no cemeteries back then. There were no towns. I plan to organize people like yourself in every state to hound their state legislators until a law is passed in all 50 states to protect these pioneer cemeteries. It is up to people like us to do something. We can be mad separately or we can be mad collectively. We will be a little more powerful if we organize. This has me mad as hell. I have talked to about a half dozen people in different states and they are upset as well with similar occurrences in their States. Want to join the bandwagon? Dennis

I have finally found the Wilbarger List! I am researching the SMITH/WALBRICK/BAINES and associated families in the areas of Vernon, Wilbarger; Denton, Denton, Palo Alto.. My grandfather Clarence Eugene SMITH, Jr. was born in Dec. 1910 in Vernon. Son of Clarence Eugene SMITH, Sr. b. July 1879, Denton, Denton, Tx. and Martha Ann "Annie" WALBRICK(changed from WOLLBRUECK, when her parents immigrated from Germany in 1901),FLUHMANN (SP?) b. 01 July 1889,Berlin, Germany ; they were married at Quanah, Hardeman, Tx on 19 Sept. 1910. Is there anyone in the area who could do a birth certificate look-up for Clarence Eugene SMITH. A written request produced no answer. I will gladly pay for a copy, along with postage, parking etc.. if one can be found. I know little of my grandfather as he died when his only child and my mother was about a year old. My thanks in advance for any assistance anyone might be able to provide. If you are able to assist with my look-up request, please email off list. There were five other children born to this couple; four in Vernon,Tx and one in Washington Cty, AR. If there are others researching this line I would love to hear from you. Also noted above is the surname Fluhmann, does this name ring a bell with anyone? Robert Fluhmann was the first husband of Martha Ann WALBRICK. They were married in Williamson Cty, Tx. in 1907. Are their any death indicies from the 1907-1910 time period, available for the County or for Vernon? Carrie in Kansas
Hi, If anyone has a copy of cemeteries in Wilbarger would appreciate a lookup. Don't know if he's there or not but was living near Vernon. JAMES E. GUINN d. 1911 Thanks, Pauline
I request a lookup at Eastside cemetery of Vernon (or its records) of a John A. BLACKWOOD who died 27 Jan 1948 and was born 9 Apr 1863. If anything is known of this person, such as other family members buried adjacent, or of his family ties I would appreciate learning of such. He would be a brother of my grandmother if the connection can be confirmed. It is claimed he is buried there but other family members who knew them well aren't aware of his existence. -- Richard Brock

Webberville, Texas See that granite marker? That's where Josiah Wilbarger, after being scalped by the Comanches, ceased his flight because his sister instructed him to in a vision -- whereupon Sarah Hornsby, wife of the patriarch of that multifarious clan, was awakened by a very similar vision and directed her husband to go fetch poor Wilbarger, who ended up living for many years. (This "legend of Hornsby's Bend" has been retold countless times and was even turned into a ballet.)
I believe it was named after Josiah Wilbarger who was scalped by indians in south central Texas. His sister had a dream about him being scalped and it actually happened at that time. Jo siah Pugh Wilbarger Josiah Pugh Wilbarger (1801-1844) Josiah Pugh Wilbarger, early settler, son of John and Ann (Pugh) Wilbarger, was born on September 10, 1801; some sources claim that he was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, but other sources say that he was born in Rockingham County, Virginia, and moved to Kentucky in 1818. Wilbarger moved to Pike County, Missouri, in 1823 and married Margaret Barker in September 1827. They left for Texas soon after the wedding, arriving at Matagorda on December 26. Wilbarger taught at Matagorda for a year before moving to La Grange, where he taught and did surveying until he settled in Stephen F. Austin's colony in a bend of the Colorado River ten miles above the site of present Bastrop. He was granted a league of land in January 1832. In August 1833 Wilbarger was a member of a surveying party that was attacked by Indians near Pecan Springs, about four miles east of the site of present Austin. He was scalped but was still living when he was found the next day by Reuben Hornsby and taken to the Hornsby home for treatment. Wilbarger never completely recovered from his wound although he lived for some eleven more years. He died at his home near Bastrop on April 11, 1844, survived by his wife and five children. Wilbarger County was established in 1858 and named in honor of Josiah Wilbarger and his brother, Mathias. On April 21, 1932, the bodies of Josiah Wilbarger and his wife were reinterred in the State Cemetery.
McHenry (Mack Henry) was born in 1832 in Rhea County as were all of JW Hughes children. He moved to Texas sometime after 1880. I think that perhaps it was after 1884 when his 2 half brothers George W. and Asberry Green Hughes were hung in Jackson County Alabama. They were hung for arson in Aug 1884. They were not guilty but the man who committed the crime did not confess until around 1893 when he was about to die. I think that this was very hard on the family because I can't find any of my Hugheses in Rhea County after 1888, when John Walker Hughes died. Rufus Calvin Hughes was born abt 1834. He is said to be buried in Burmingham, Alabama. He had a son William that went to Kaufman County, Texas. Jackson Hughes was born about 1838 and I think that I found his marriage in Knox County to Elzena Carloss - 23 May 1862. It is the only Jackson that I can find, so I am assuming that he is mine until I find a better one. Thomas Pleasant Hughes was born abt 1839. He moved to Arkansas and married a Tennessee girl - Sarah Catherine Adcock/Adcox/Odcox in 1866. Their first son was William Mack Henry Hughes, he was born in Batesville, Arkansas. John Hughes is unknown to me but was born abt 1843. I can't find a thing about him. William J Terrell Hughes was born about 1845 and my grandmother states that he was a twin to Mary C Hughes. William was married to a Mandy J and they had eight children and they ended up in Hall County Texas as did my gg grandfather Mack Henry. James P Hughes was born 1847 was married in Jackson County Alabama and was in the 1870 Census there. He had a wife Mary and a baby Eliza R (named after his younger sister - Eliza R Hughes born 1849). In 1880 I found him in Tennessee again and married to someone else and has three children but not Eliza R. I don't know what happened to them. The above children were the product of JW Hughes and Mary Davis. JW married Catherine Margaret Mathis in the mid 1850's. She was 20 years old on the 1860 census. They had 6 children with the last 2 questionable. Sarah Elender was born abt 1859 and later census states she is insane. She remains with her father all her life. Asberry and George were born abt 1862-1864. There were hung as young men. The remaining son was John W. Hughes (Jr.) He is never stated as a junior but I use it to tell them apart. I found him in 1880 in Blount as a 15 year old boarder. He is in the 1900 census in either Meigs or McMinn County with 5 boys. Samuel - 1890, Henry - 1893, George - 1895, Mack -1896, and Danford - 1898. I cannot find anything on these boys or their father after the 1900 census. I am sure that my ggg grandmother left my grandfather - JWHughes because I can't find John or Jackson or Thomas P in Rhea County after the 1850 census. If anyone can connect or know anything of these families please let me know. Thanks Maxine Hughes Blair dmblair@usasn.com

John Richardson McILHANEY and his wife Ollie Delilah UMBERSON McIlhaney, moved to Wilbarger County sometime before 1907 and moved to Lubbock abt 1912. Please contact me if you have any information about them. I am willing to share my information as well. Thank you, John R.
