Posted on: Wilbarger County, Tx Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/WilbargerObits/42 Surname: Rushin, Collingsworth ------------------------- >From the Thursday Sept 1 1966 issue of the Vernon Daily Record Two motorists were killed in separate but related traffic accidents, within a two-hour period, at the same location on U.S. 287 in Harrold Thursday morning. Investigation of the first fatal wreck was underway as the second occurred when a pickup slammed into a parked truck at the scene. The first accident occurred at 12:50 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 287 and Farm Road 1763 and the second mishap just west of the intersection. The dead were Quenten Collingsworth, 41 a former Vernon resident and Wendell Ray Rushin, 22 of Electra. Justice of the Peace Pete Gobin of Vernon pronounced both dead at the scene. Mr. Rushin was killed instantly when his 1965 Mustang collided at the intersection with a 1965 Ford semi-trailer truck driven by Robert Miller Jr. of Clarksville. Highway Patrolman Eldon Thane reported that the Rushin car was going south on 1763 when it pulled into the path of the Miller truck which was going west on Highway 287. The force of the collision tore the car in half and caused the truck to go into a skid and turn over on it's right side some distance west of the intersection. The second accident occurred at 2:50 a.m. and involved a 1958 GMC semi-truck driven by Duard C. Liles of Ft. Worth and a 1964 Chevrolet pickup driven by Collingsworth. Patrolman Thane reported that the Liles truck was parked in the South lane of Highway 287 with blinkers on to warn approaching vehicles of the wreckage of the first accident. The Collingsworth pickup was going east on highway 287 when it slammed into the rear of the parked truck. When the second accident occurred, several wreckers were attempting to remove the overturned truck from the highway. Funeral arrangements for Mr. Rushin are pending at Henderson Funeral Home. Mr. Rushin, a texture painter, was born Aug. 2 1944 in Tishimingo Okla. He was a 1962 graduate of Davidson High School and had recently served with the Armed Forces in Viet Nam. 3. Posted on: Wilbarger County, Tx Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/WilbargerObits/41 Surname: Shive, Napier ------------------------- >From the Friday, Feb. 20, 1925 issue of the Vernon Record, Wilbarger Co. TX Pioneer Citizen Claimed by Death Early Wednesday T. H. Shive, prominent Vernon citizen for more than 35 years, died at his Long Beach, Calif. home Wednesday morning after an illness of two months following a stroke of paralysis. His body will be brought to Vernon for burial and will arrive tomorrow night, accompanied by members of the family. Burial will take place here Sunday afternoon in Eastview Cemetery. Services will be conducted at the Presbyterian Church by Rev. E. L. Moore assisted by Dr. T. S. Clyce of Sherman, president of Austin College. Surviving Mr. Shive are his wife; three daughters, Miss Olive Shive and Mrs. Elmer Dial of Long Beach and Mrs. W. B. McCaleb of Vernon; and one son, Tom Jr. of Long Beach. In addition to members of the immediate family Messers. Dial and McCaleb and Sam Napier, brother of Mrs. Shive, will accompany the remains to Vernon. Mr. McCaleb and Napier were summoned to Long Beach several weeks ago when it became apparent Mr. Shive could not survive the illness. Mr. Shive was stricken about December 18, soon after he had returned from Vernon after a stay of several weeks looking after business matters. He was apparently in good health and the news of his sudden attack came as a shock to local relatives and friends and Vernon people were not unprepared to hear the announcement of death Wednesday. In addition to hosts of friends from throughout the State who have indicated they will attend the funeral, three brothers of Mrs. Shive, Walter Napier of Dallas, Ernest Napier of Gulfport, Miss. and Coke Napier of Wichita Falls will be there Sunday. Mr. Shive was a native Texan. He was born in Goliad and was in his 68th year. He came to Vernon in 1887and was an employee of the late T. A. Scurlock who was in the implement business at the time. He later engaged in the implement business himself and 30 years, the major portion of his active years, was spent in this business in Vernon. He disposed of this business in 1914 to Napier Bros. To enter the Ford automobile business, in which he continued until 1918 when he sold it to Napier Bros., the latter having in the mean time disposed of the implement business. He was the owner of considerable property and was a Director of the Waggoner National Bank. Mr. Shive was married to Miss Hattie Napier December 18, 1890. Four children were born to this couple, all of which are living except for one daughter, Annie, who died when quite young. Perhaps there never lived a man in Vernon more universally loved than T. H. Shive. He was a loyal supporter of all movements for the building of our city, liberal almost to a fault and devoted much time and money to furthering the work of the Presbyterian Church, of which he was a devout member. He was a liberal patron of the various enterprises of the Presbyterian Church and at various times held positions of trust in the church institutions in Texas, He was equally prominent and active as a Mason, being a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a Knights Templar and a Shriner. Although he had been compelled to give up his residence here due to his wife's health, Vernon will mourn him as one of her own sons and honor his memory accordingly.

    3. Hi everyone, I have been getting a lot of emails where people can't access this site. The only thing I can say is that the site got greedy and want all of us to join and pay a fee or we overloaded their system and we are getting the "invalid" page. I tried using it this a.m. and I couldn't access it either. It opens to the beginning of the main page and I clicked "search for birthday" and entered the data but them it came up "invalid". Sorry about all of this, but maybe wait a day or two and try again. As I said it may have been overloaded. also for the ones that can't reach it by the http://www.anybirthday.com/ try www.anybirthday.com and see if that works for you, some ISP won't let you click on an embedded URL, you have to type it or copy and paste. I know it works, or did and as I have said it gives the birthday of the person you are looking for, I found mine again. LOL but when I started using it this a.m. I got the "invalid" page. Sorry that it isn't working right now-but try later. Cheers Janice

Is it still available for purchase? I'm seeking to learn whether it has information about Mary Windham Theus and Georgia A.H. Theus Starr. I understand from John R. Adams, Taylor Co. GA Historian, that it has several pages including a photo of Richard A. Theus (pp.136-137)who accompanied his mother and sister to Texas in 1883. I'm not sure where they settled originally, but the book supposedly states that Richard was buried (1926)in Eastview Cemetery near Vernon, Wilbarger Co., Texas. I would especially like to have a photo of Richard A. Theus and any any info on his mother/sister/brother/brother-in-law/nieces/nephews. I have a photo (1915)of his brother, Thomas B. Theus and his wife, children, their spouses, and grandchildren, on my website. See URL below. Born in 1809 in SC or GA, she married Henry Theus and had nine children. Seven of her sons enlisted with Company C of the 59th GA Volunteer Infantry in Butler, Taylor Co., GA in May 1862. Only three of those sons returned from the war. One of them, Richard A. "Dick" Theus, accompanied Mary Windham Theus and her youngest child, Georgia A.H.Theus Starr, to Texas in 1883. Supposedly, the youngest Theus son, George W., moved to Texas as well---exact location unknown. Here's what I have on Richard A. Theus: 7. Richard A. Theus was born 2-Sep-1839, died 18-May-1926 in Wilbarger Co. TX Buried Eastview cemetery near Vernon, TX. Surrendered at Appomattox, VA Apr 9, 1865. Appeared in 1860 and 1880 Taylor Co. Census. Married Malinda Peed in Taylor Co., 21-Nov-1882. Listed in Henderson's Roster of Confederate Soldiers of GA 1861-65 Vol.6, page 34. In "They Followed the Sun" by Marguerite Starr Crain & Janell Turner Wenzel, page 137-136, "Richard A. Theus (also picture) was born September 2, 1839 and died May 18, 1926 in Wilbarger County, Texas. He was buried in Eastview cemetery near Vernon, Texas. He enlisted as a private in Co. C, 7th Regiment State Troops which subsequently became Co. C, 59th Georgia infantry, Confederate Army May 10, 1862. His record shows no hospital or wounds. He surrendered with Gen. R. E. Lee April 9, 1865. "Dick", as he was called married Malinda Peed November 21, 1882 in Taylor Co., Ga. They were married by Elder John Richard Respess, MG." They appeared to have separated or divorced, not sure. Richard went to Texas with his mother and sister, Georgian in 1883. Malinda Peed Theus was in the millinery business with Miss Annah Trussell. Malinda Peed Theus died in Columbus, Ga. 29-June-1897. [Source: John R. Adams, Historian, Taylor County Historical-Genealogical Society ] I imagine that Mary Windham Theus is buried near where her son is buried in Eastview Cemetery near Vernon. However, she may have been living with her daughter, Georgia (b.1853)and son-in-law, James Penn Starr or youngest son, George W. Theus (b. 1848) when she died. I've not been able to locate a copy of the above book (yet), "They Followed The Sun" here in Macon, GA. to learn whether it tells anything of Mary Windham Theus. Any info on the Theus or Starr families would be appreciated. Also, I gather that a cemetery near Vernon was covered by a lake built in 1963. Is Eastview Cemetery still in existence? Or it the one that was moved or flooded? Link: Theus Genealogy URL: <http://www.fortunecity.com/meltingpot/harrow/505/Gen-Theus.htm>

    3. Hi, Have you tried the funeral homes in that district? Also, the State of Texas for a REGISTER OF DEATH? I received one on a relative that died in 1925 in Grayson CO TX. Someone looked it up in the State of TX records, gave me the name of the county she died in and I wrote and requested it. So when you request a "death certificate" also request and/or "register of death". They should have one or the other. Also in that time frame a lot of families buried their own without a funeral home. But on my relative's it stated what funeral home assisted as well as the deceased husband's name listed as undertaker. Good luck. These are microfilmed rolls of deaths in Texas from 1903 to present. Not much info is given, just name, date of death, and county of death. Armed with this information, one can write either the court house of the county of death, or the Texas Dept of Health, Birth and Death Reords in Austin, Tx to obtain the certificate. The cost, either through the county clerk's office or the State Records in Austin is about $9.00. Many genealogy libraries in Texas have a Texas Death Index Microfilm. If you are out of state, please e-mail me privately, and I will see if I can do the lookup for you.
