Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RAC.2ACI/1604.2.1 Message Board Post: Shirley, Thank you for your response. We have checked this particular Raymond Smith out, and my mother has a feeling it is her Daddy, but I am not sure. Our Raymond H. is supposed to be Raymond Harold, and the similarities are certainly there. My Grandfather started out as a lineman, (which does have to do with electricity) after he married my Grandmother in 1914. He also worked at a farm in Brazoria County, the county in which he registered for the World War 1 draft. Then he worked for Kirby Lumber Co. in Conroe, Texas. The strange thing is that we have been unable to find him or my grandmother in the 1920 census. One difference between the Raymond H. Smith in the 1930 census and my grandfather is their ages. My grandfather stated on his draft record he was born in January 30,1889 in Smith Grove, Kentucky. My grandmother had always said he was born in 1887 and that he came from Pennsylvania when he was 20 years old, and that he died when he was 40 years old in 1927. When she died, we found the WW1 Draft card in her little box of his few personal effects that he left behind when he left her. Also found in those personal effects were a business card with Raymond H. Smith Fingerprint expert, Fort Worth, Texas. It had a fingerprint on it. People did not share their very intimate personal lives back then as they do now. She was certainly very closed about it. Thank you again for your help. Jeanette

I have looked at newspapers on microfilm, and they are extremely hard on the eyes. I guess I had in mind an obituary section, or headlines. We have about 10 death certificates we have ordered from Austin. I could inquire of the Witchita Co. Clerk, though. Thank you for the suggestion and help. Kindest Regards, Jeanette

I wonder if there might be a write up in the paper, regarding his death, and might give some info on his family.. I know that he didn't die there, but most everything that ever happened to Tom ROARK or his family made the paper. I know what a hassle it is to search those papers, as I was up there several years ago, and found all the other death notices, but did not know about this one at that time. If anyone can find a write up, I would appreciate a transciption.

His Mother & Father, S G BERRY and S D BERRY died in the early 1930's and are buried in Riverside. His sister and brother-in-law, Sarah Ida Rebecca (BERRY) ROARK & William H. Thomas ROARK, are also buried in Riverside. I have been to their graves, and did not see a head stone for Geo., but he could be there and not have a stone. His death certificate also states that he was married, but I have no information on his spouse, and don't know if he had children. My ROARK's and BERRY's came to Wichita Falls from Navarro Co. TX.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RAC.2ACI/1604.1 Message Board Post: Jeanette, looking for a story on your Raymond in the old newspapers is like reading a novel. To go through that many months of papers would take days to do. You have to read each and every headline on every page of the paper. There is not a section back then for just obits and deaths could be on the first page or the last page or any where in between. It would be almost impossible for someone to sit at the microfilm reader and go through that many papers. I checked my city cemetery list just to be sure he isn't buried here. I found a couple of Raymonds but different middle initials and I did find an R.H. Smith but he died Dec. 1918. I wish we could help you more. Texas Death records begin in 1903 so if your Raymond died in TX he should be listed in those records. All of the records are on microfilm or maybe you can call the Wichita Co. Clerk and see if she can do a lookup for you. Julie

Surnames: Smith Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RAC.2ACI/1604 Message Board Post: I have hit brick walls everywhere looking for my grandfather Raymond H. Smith. He left my grandmother in about 1923 or 1924 with 3 children and one on the way. There are several tales about him and his leaving. One is that he ran away to Dallas, TX from Conroe, TX with another woman. They supposedly had a baby boy who died at birth. In 1927 my grandfather was supposed to have been shot in Dallas, TX and his body taken by his Uncle who was a lawyer to Chicago, Illinois. There were no newspaper articles, no death certificates that fit my grandfather. I even wrote Cooke Co., Illinois and there was no record of his death there. I called Vital Statistics in Austin about transport records, and the person told me that they do not keep those records that long. The second tale, and one that involves Witchita Co. is that he was working for a ranch, and fell into a dipping vat and was killed. I am grasping at straws and wondering if there might be any news articles in 1927 about this death occurring. I would assume that if they were dipping cattle, that it would probably be late spring to fall when this occurred. My grandmother never would give us much information. Hoping to one day solve this mystery. He still has 3 surviving children who are approaching their 90's and would love some answers. Kindest regards, Jeanette Anglin

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RAC.2ACI/1601 Message Board Post: I am in the process of surveying the Burk cemetery and I came across a stone for Ethel wife of Homer F. Griffin. I have been searching for about 20 years for a Homer Griffin who married Sunshine Villepigue (may not be her last name) and was mentioned in a 1912 obituary as Mrs. Homer Griffin of Dallas. I can't find a Homer in the 1920 census with a Sunshine or any female that would match her. But in the 1930 census in Dallas Co. there is a Homer F. Griffin who was born in 1877 and he is a widow. Could it be that he was a widow of my Sunshine and THEN he married Edith who was born Mar. 11, 1893 and died Aug. 29, 1951? I would like to talk to anyone who is researching this family or the Welch family from Burk. Buried next to Ethel is a Jessie D. Welch born Oct. 18, 1869 and died Nov. 23, 1914. Julie
