Hi, I would like to contact any descendants of the CLAY family, (Nestor, Tacitus, or other people related to the Clay family) who lived in Washington/Milam County from the early 1830's to 1900. Nestor Clay's wife, Nancy Wilson JOHNSON was a sister to my gggrandmother. Nestor received a land grant from The Mexican Government in the 1830's and he and Nancy are buried in the State Cemetery in Austin. Faye Blacklock cnfba@flash.net
Greetings, all. I noticed via Rootsweb that the Washington County list was up for adoption and then that it had been adopted. Who is our new list administrator? Vince L
I have been asked to forward on the message I have pasted below to my Texas Lists. I am doing so because I think a Texas Cemeteries Webpage will be helpful research tool for many of you. Kathleen Burnett List Mom Many hours have been spent recently compiling a new "Texas Cemeteries Directory" which is hoped to benefit every Texas Genealogy Researcher and at the same time encourage the preservation of our Cemeteries. The new Directory shows over 21,000 cemeteries found on line with information about where each one was found in an easy to use format. The directory includes information about those cemeteries that have been inventoried and where to find them. So far those who have visited this new Directory have made such comments as "What a neat idea." & "You've really hit on something here." In addition our web site hosts the list of cemeteries which have reached the protected status of "Historic Texas Cemetery" designation, whose program was developed by "The Texas Historical Commission". We also have a special page where those who have labored to write books about our cemeteries can announce the availability of those books, sell the books, buy a book, or trade them. Most well organized cemetery inventory projects sell the books to fund the project. We all know how expensive it is to work in our cemeteries and believe this is a vital part of encouraging their preservation. There is lots more to see, so come check us out, and while you're there leave a message about a neglected cemetery in our guest book. These posts are followed up on by the folks at "Save Texas Cemeteries" and the folks who manage the "Historic Texas Cemetery" designation program. With your participation it is our hope to encourage the location, inventory and preservation of our Historic Texas Cemeteries. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~txcemeteries/
My name is Kathleen Burnett and I am your new List Mom. I want to take a moment and let you know who I am and a little about me and how I work as a Mailing List Mom. I am a mother of four and grandmother of nine. I work outside of the home during the day. I am a list Mom to several other Mailing Lists and am very actively involved in my own family research. I am a hands on List Mom, meaning I keep track of what is going on with the mailing list and if you are ever in need of me during the day, while at work, you can reach me at kburnett@wardleygmac.com - in the evenings or on Sunday I can be reached at kburnet@efortress.com My goal for your list is to keep it a safe place for you to research your Washington Co., Texas surnames and history. Safe meaning a place where you are not subject to postings other than posting related to the subject of the list. For your information, the TXWASHIN Mailing List has 69 members, 54 of these are subscribed to the Regular List and 15 to the Digest List. If you would like to visit the archived messages for this list you may go to http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and type in TXWASHIN. From there you can search by keyword. There is a great Rootsweb site you can go to if you want to find out what Rootsweb lists you are a member of or need to unsubscribe from a list, just follow the instructions. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ A quick note on the rules of the mailing lists I take care of so that it is better for each of us. The posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, flames, etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at kburnet@efortress.com Also the calling for Roll Call is not encouraged by members of this list. If you feel the need for a Roll Call contact me and we will schedule one with a beginning time and ending time. I wish for each of you a success in the year 2001 with your most difficult genealogical mystery and I look forward to getting to know you. Kathleen Burnett List Mom =

----- Original Message ----- From: "jasson" <jasson@wac.com> To: <OKROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 28, 2000 9:28 AM Subject: [OKROOTS] dust bowl migrants to california > My name is Jason Holtermann I am 23 years old and attending college. I am working on my senior theses research paper. My grandfather was born in Oklahoma in 1920 and in 1935 his family moved to California. They like most other dust bowl migrants found work in the fields in the central valley picking fruit and so forth. During the war my grandfather joined the navy. What I am looking for is other dust bowl migrants or their descendants who came to California from the dust bowl region of Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas. I am interested in the work they did when they arrived in California, the work they did during the depression, and the work they did during the war. Those who respond to this message please email me directly. There is no need to bother the rest of the list with my request. If you know of anybody or you subscribe to other lists that might help me please respond, I need as much input as I can get for this survey. Thank You, Jason. > > > ==== OKROOTS Mailing List ==== >
Thank you all for your quick response to my request. In reponse to the question from Billy Jackson if I'm a "ZUEHLKE" from Texas. The answer is yes. In fact I only live about 40 miles from him in Clifton, Bosque County. All of my four sets of grandparents began their life in America in Washington County, Texas. My great-grandfather, AUGUST ZUEHLKE, and his family left Washington County in the early 1880's settling in Bosque County. Other primary names that I'm researching are THIELE, HAMPE, and WALSLEBEN. Those families also left Washington County (around the 1900's) and settled in Bosque County. Since I have had little luck getting information about their ancestors I thought I'd try my hand at learning what drew them to Washington County. I'm assuming there were other family members living there. Billy, your response really caught my attention. I am not the first "Helen Zuehlke" in my family. I had a great aunt, Helen Ernestine Zuehlke, who was born in the 1882 in Washington County. Our story is that her father, August Zuehlke, had a brother in Texas, but since he died in 1888 no information was handed down about other family members except for his sister, Caroline Zuehlke Bernhardt. Do you think there is any connection? You can e-mail me directly at jmorris@htcomp.net. Helen Morris Helen Morris

Could anyone who has access to Washington Co. cemetery records tell me if a Benjamin Armstrong, b. 1832 shows up in any Washington Co. cemetery? This Benjamin is a son of John & Sylvia Armstrong. They and several of their children are buried in Bethlehem Cemetery in Greenvine. I have been told that Benjamin is not among them. Benjamin was with the family according to the school census records at least until 1858. He is no longer with the family in the 1860 census and is not mentioned in his father's will in 1870. I have searched every Benjamin Armstrong in TX and surrounding states during this time period and have not found him. Thus, I now believe that he must have died before the 1860 census. If so, he must be buried in Washington Co, but where?
Hi, I am looking for Joseph Priestly. Are there Priestly names in the Washington Co TX cemetery books? Born in the 1800's and could have died latter 1800's early 1900's not sure of the dates. Joseph married about 1865/6 as a young man, if that gives a clue. I don't know if he had a family. Thanks you. Karen Smith

Rebecca Catharine Haynes O'Barr, the widow of Dr. John O'Barr, was married 12-18-1856 in Washington Co., to William Adam Dinwiddie. There were two or three O'Barr children in her household, and Mr. Dinwiddie helped her to raise those children, and several of his own, from the time of the wedding. Dr. O'Barr, her first husband, was a medical doctor, and he died early in his lifetime, presumably from some epidemic of fever, and he is buried, so far as we know, in Washington Co. One of the sons of Rebecca's second marriage was William Edwin Dinwiddie, b. 1-20-1868, in Washington Co. There were several other Dinwiddie children, both before and after William Edwin, who is my GF. Any information about the ancestry of Dr. O'Barr, and information about his children would be very interesting to me, for the broader outline of this family's extended tree. Please let me know if you can help!! Thanks. Hello, I am proud to announce the creation of a new mail list called TX-Cemeteries. This list has the encouragement of Gerron S. Hite, Cemetery Preservation Coordinator in the History Programs Division of the Texas Historical Commission and he's excited at the opportunity to share his feelings about our cemetery preservation to a large group all at once Others that have been notified, Lee Campbell, Past Representative for the Texas State Genealogical Society {and my cousin} and her friend, Past President of the TSGS Wanda Donaldson. I've let all the following people know about the list and they may join from time to time. Yvonne Pickens, current President of the TSGS. Trey Holt, coordinator for the Texas GenWeb. Wyndell Taylor, creator of GA Cherokee County GenWeb page, {and my cousin}. <Smile> I just have a lot of cousins !!!! The main focus of this list will be to locate and catalogue our endangered cemeteries. Gerron Hite has obtained a new program to help us give our cemeteries "Historic Texas Cemetery Designation". He is willing to help us learn how to accomplish this designation. This will also be a topic for us to address. I am an experienced RootsWeb mail list admin. Currently I manage the mail list for VARoots, SC-Old Pendleton-District, and the Brand surname list. I am also experienced in the survey of large and small cemeteries. In addition to the topics above there will be discussions on how to preserve and restore old monuments with the help of a caretaker with over 25 years experience. To join the mail list simply send a message to TX-Cemeteries-L-request@rootsweb.com with only the word subscribe in the subject line and nothing else. If you prefer the Digest send a message to TX-Cemeteries-D-request@rootsweb.com with only the word subscribe in the subject line and nothing else. I look forward to seeing you there, Respectfully, donna brand
