This is old material for many of you, but we always have new people coming along. For them, this is basic reference information on terms you will find in your work. Thanks, Dorathy Luedecke Hardie, for sending this along to me. We've seen it before, but it's been some time, and it may have even been on another website, I can't recall.. bj http://www.genealogy-quest.com/glossaries/
Carolyn Shearer just sent along this Super Reference Site!! Say, Carolyn, how in the world did you happen onto that one? Mighty good. Thanks so much, from all of us. Never know what's lurking out there, right? bj Take a look at this ref site. http://www.pro.gov.uk/leaflets/riindex.htm
Something caught my attention on this page and I nearly forgot to send it out to Y'all. Hope you find something, think we saw it before, but I got to looking again. bj http://www.seidata.com/~lhoffman/gen.html
Nice site of research areas for Illinois history and research links...one is to genealogy, somewhat down the page. http://alexia.lis.uiuc.edu/~sorensen/hist.html

These came in on a list, has leads for those of you with Cherokee Ancestry, and leads from those to Native American of other sort. I know most of you don't need these, but some do. bj http://www.angelfire.com/or/matney has a lot of good Cherokee links. Dan Matney is the web owner, he's also a list owner of 4 (I think) mailing list. Cherokee list (Culture) CherokeeGene list (Genealogy only) CherokeePrayer (to ask, give & send out Prayers regardless of religion) a CherokeeChat (to talk about anything & everything under the sun) And http://members.aye.net/~ictp/ has various Native American books, music etc. A lot of research material available.
Karlos, and VIP TECH SUPPORT You have done those of us in the Victoria Area, who are VIP customers, an invaluable service by posting notices to all your customers detailing information we all need from time to time. That note telling us EXACTLY what to do and change for our TCP/IP connections is something all of your customers surely welcome, as do I. It is super, user friendly, and even I can see what you want us to do. I printed the whole thing. So simple we can all do it. This gentleman is looking for some info, can one of you out there help? I've sent him the addresses I know of who might be able to help, but there is a bunch of you I may not know of. It would be good for the list if you would also post a CC to the list when you answer so everyone will know you did help, and the answer might help someone else. Thanks, bj "John L. Hello, folks, It's been called to my attention that I need to update the information on my TAGS lines on the list. And, yes, I sure do! There has been a change of information for the History Book being done by our local Genealogical Society. The former deadline of August has come and gone, but you may still continue to send in your articles for any and all of your families. There currently is no deadline set, as they will continue until they get the required number of articles done by submitters. Then, it will close and go to print. It will take longer to get the book, but my, what a book it will be! So, get your Victoria connection families in print. Here's the How of it. 1. Your family member must have resided in VICTORIA COUNTY at some point, but for not set time period. They just have to have lived here, way back when, or NOW, including people who just now arrived here. 2. You may have TWO PAGES of FREE space. (*See Number 3 rule.) 3. You must use a COURIER 10 FONT to write it in typewritten method. You can use however many words you can cram on a page with that font, margins do not matter. You can set your margin any place you want to. 4. BUT, if you have no typewriter, they will take it in handwritten method and a volunteer will transcribe it for you. Mail those to Doris Obsta, 4306 Guy Grant Road, Victoria, Texas 77904 5. You may even submit it via email. Send those to the address: GENEALOGY@colbalt.vic.uh.edu 6. Last, but not least, you are allowed ONE FREE PICTURE of your people your article is about. Details for that are: You will lend your picture to us to COPY, then you will get your picture returned, OR, you may have it copied yourself at some copy/photographer, but you need to have it done in a GLOSSY BLACK AND WHITE, so it will transfer correctly into the book. If you send a picture, your picture sent will be returned to you, whatever kind it is. The Victoria College Archives will keep one COPY so it will be forever on file here in this town archives. 7. You may submit as many articles as you want to, so long as it is of different people. You can use every branch of family or individuals you have on your tree, the only rule is they had to have lived here. 8. Now for the extra information stuff. Generally your article might be more words than the two pages allowed with that font, and if it is, you may opt to keep every single word which begins to fall over onto new and more pages. The rule for that is you must pay the VCGS 40 cents per LINE for ever line over it. (I did, myself, because I wanted the article on my family like I wanted it, and that's allowed, but you have to pay extra if you use extra space. Now, that's being very fair, we think.) 9. More Extra Information. Your picture submitted will be reduced to a ONE COLUMN (text size column like a newspaper column) as the Free Picture. BUT, if you want it larger, you may have a Double, or even Three Column picture put in, but for every column width you go over, you pay another $5.00. So, a two column width photo is $5.00 extra; a three column photo is $10.00 extra, but you see the possibilities? You can submit separately those photos to be put on as single column pictures, also, but it will still cost you $5.00 for every one you submit beyond the first and free one we allow you. Did I make that plain, or muddy it up? If you are confused about any one point, contact our VCGS office over at Victoria College where they have been given works space by the college for this historical project. You can talk to any of them at 361-573-3291, ask for the Genealogy Society Room. ( I don't have the direct phone number, this is a switchboard number, but they will put you through. The VCGS group is located in the Library there) You all know the project itself is in honor of our county's 175 Anniversary Year. Formed in 1824, we are celebrating a full 175 years this whole year with various fests and activities. Hurry now and get busy on your articles. Use this chance to put your ancestors IN PRINT for all your descendants, cousins, and inlaws to see. Make your footprint in time. Let people who come after you at least know you did live, and did do something. Yes, maybe all of us haven't done something historic, or earth shattering, but be very sure, some descendant is going to come looking for their family, and maybe you did not even help them find you and your ancestors! That would be a great loss, not only to them, but in not honoring your ancestors, even if you think maybe you don't need to put yourself in. Truth is, you need to even put YOU in. One day WE will BE those ancestors! HA, think on that! Get your articles in, hurry, hurry, hurry! (That sounds like a carnival barker cry.) bj, your Victoria Listmanager, and county book promoter! did you guess that by now? Make a copy and save this, it's too, too much to put on those little tags. And I still have to repair them, when I get time!

Another site to look over, from Carolyn Shearer. Thanks, Carolyn. bj http://www.geocities.com/heartland/pines/2318/
Probably not many from around here need this site, but you may know someone who does. This state has put birth records online, 80,000 of them and more coming, that date to the onset of their record keeping, plus,it includes some even older ones because they allowed those born before 1905 to come in and register their births, too. So, check out Vital Records of South Dakota, if you need to. bj http://www.state.sd.us/doh/vitalrec/birthrecords/index.cfm
Consider this an infomercial. First thing is a webpage I fully enjoy, and it has a little shareware program on offer. It's called WebShots. Go to http://www.webshots.com and download the little program. It comes with a lot of screensavers that show across your screen when you are idle at it, but what I love about it, is you can import by clicking on the pictures panel (you'll see it after you install it) with your right mouse button, and import in any of your scanned photos you have stored on your machine. It then gives you a display of your own family shots, plus those others of whatever your pleasure is. Has travel, whitewater, nature, flowers, etc. Those are okay, and pretty, but I love to walk in and see my screen showing my grandmother and grandfather spread across the screen. And, it rotates through all your pictures, so you'll see first one then another, husbands, kids, grandkids, pets, whatever you scan and save there. Well, that's the first thing I wanted to share with you. WebShots, nice program. Second thing is, just recently there were a lot of warnings about Virus called Happy99, I think it is. I don't much like to pass those warnings along, because all of the information is available online about the various viruses. This week a friend told me she'd been expecting a birthday card, and thought that was one when she saw it. When it opened, of course it wiped out the computer memory, so they have had to start gathering again. You can sure lose a lot that way. So, this is a note to you all, don't fall for that HAPPY anything! Just delete if you see that word on your title bar. If you never click on it and open it, it can't affect your machine at all. A good virus checker ought to catch it, but they had not installed one yet. Well, a word to the wise... is all I meant to pass along. Just especially watch for funny stuff you don't recognize the sender of. Try to stay atop what virus is going around by looking at the info pages once in awhile. I wish had mentioned it earlier, but I though most of you would already know about it. If I had, my friend wouldn't have lost her material. This is a shutting the barn door after the horse is out' message. bj
I saw this and got a laugh at it. Shouldn't send it, but think I will. I got to wondering how you could mar a quacker. Stuff the duck down in a pillow? :) I'm sorry, I can't help it. I'm still thinking it over. bj He was kicked out of the Quaker Church for not marring a Quacker.
this came from the Calhoun Co. list group. I looked at it and looks like there are some things we haven't seen yet. One link is for Texas, and other for AL. bj http://www.angelfire.com/tx2/UncleHiram/texassites.html http://www.angelfire.com/tx2/UncleHiram/AlabamaSites.html
http://www.indianolabulletin.com/ Indianola, Texas Join us in looking and admiring Linda Wolff's brand new website. Up this weekend for the first time. She says it has a few glitches but she will correct them in a week. Meanwhile, this is a wonderful page of information and good for our area research. Good for you, Linda!! Super job!! Thank you for all your hard work, and the time consuming patience in finally getting it up there in cyberspace. bj

Happened on this page while hunting another and think it is a good one to recommend to any of our black friends who are working on family lines. It's a good page, I think, lot of good leads here to records. Thought someone may benefit from seeing it, hard to find research help for black lineage's, but more coming online all the time. bj, listmanager http://www.coax.net/people/lwf/
