    3. This was sent in by Beatrice Forman from a mail list. Thanks, Beatrice. bj MHI Photograph Database This site was created by the U.S. Army Military History Institute and it is a searchable database of their Special Collections. Using this database you can see if a photograph exists of your Civil War ancestor. Just enter the surname you're searching and the results page will give any photos of any soldier with that surname, along with (if known) his regiment. Next, you can send an e-mail with the photo ID's that you're interested in. The Army will then send you (for free) a photocopy of the picture, along with instructions on ordering a duplicate photo. An 8x10 photo costs $10.00. No more then ten photos will be produced for any one customer per year. http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/PhotoDB.html This database is a catalog of American Civil War (ACW) photographs from the Special Collections Branch of MHI. Usually, patrons are searching for ancestors, researching particular ACW regiments, or looking for examples of items worn or used by soldiers of the period. Ultimately, this database will reflect the full range of MHI's photographic collection, ranging from the periods of the Mexican War in the 1840s to recent operations such as those in Somalia and Bosnia. As our digitization efforts expand, we hope to provide links to scanned images through this database.

It's new to me, and I hope you enjoy it. The webpage author has done a really good job, IMO. bj http://www.stlcc.cc.mo.us/fv/users/afoster/bc/Hist.htm

    3. >From a friend. bj All I Need To Know About Life I Learned From Trees (author unknown) It's important to have roots. In today's complex world, it pays to branch out. Don't pine away over old flames. If you really believe in something, don't be afraid to go out on a limb. Be flexible so you don't break when a harsh wind blows. Sometimes you have to shed your old bark in order to grow. If you want to maintain accurate records, keep a log. To be politically correct, don't wear firs. Grow where you're planted. It's perfectly okay to be a late bloomer. Avoid people who would like to cut you down. Get all spruced up when you have a hot date. If the party gets boring, just leaf. You can't hide your true colors as you approach the autumn of your life. It's more important to be honest than poplar.

    3. Come Celebrate! Just wanted to invite all of you who can come over to the Community Center this morning at 10:30 am for the official opening of the 175th year Celebration of the formation of our Victoria. The cake will be cut with DeLeon's sword beginning at 10:30, then fun all day, ending with tours of Evergreen Cemetery in the evening, which will have costumed speakers representing a few of our own local celebrities who lie at rest in Evergreen. Please be sure and stop by the Genealogy booth, buy a hot dog, and browse the names submitted already for THE COUNTY BOOK the society is working on. Your name may still need to be added. The wall is plastered with those who have already turned in stories. IS YOURS THERE? If not, you'd best get hustling! Come on out, see the huge cake in the middle of the room! There will be a lot of activity going on, all over the place! bj I LOVE VICTORIA!!

    3. Most of us have looked at early Maryland records, but you may have not noticed they are adding records. Ancestry announced it this week. bj They said.. MARYLAND STATE ARCHIVES http://www.mdsa.net/msa/homepage/html/homepage.html The Maryland State Archives is one of many state archives that has begun putting records online to make them more accessible to the public. The site features comprehensive research guides to the archives' collections, the ability to search the archives library, and several search functions that help users navigate the 25,000 pages currently available on the site. Online data includes: ~ The Historical and Biographical Series http://www.mdsa.net/msa/refserv/html/bioinfo.html Biographical sketches and photos of notable Marylanders from Maryland history. There are sections on African Americans, Women, Soldiers & Sailors, Artists, and Maryland Government. ~ Religious Records Program http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/speccol/html/0002.html General information, WPA Survey of Church Records, Church Records--Deaths and Burials Index, with more indexes to come. ~ United States Colored Troops Resident in Baltimore at the time of the 1890 Census http://www.mdsa.net/msa/speccol/3096/html/sc3096.html ~ "A Supplement to The Early Settlers of Maryland" compiled by Carson Gibb, Ph.D http://www.mdsa.net/msa/speccol/sc4300/sc4341/html/search.html This volume comprises 8,680 entries correcting omissions and errors in Gust Skordas, "The Early Settlers of Maryland" and was published by the Archives in 1997.

    1. Elusive Family of Victoria co.
    2. Thought I might throw this out again. My BECK Family is still a brick wall. * There were two separate BECK Families in the Victoria, Victoria Co., Texas area in the late 1800s - to mid 1900s. Mine: Between 1876 and 1886 - the earliest date of arrival is what has always been told by old family members - the later date is what is stated on the census of 1910; a young man arrived in this country from Germany with at least his mother. Unknown if there was a father or any siblings. Frank E. Beck was born in Germany in 1873, arriving either 1876 or 1886. A sworn statement was made in 1918 in Houston, Harris Co., Texas to the affect that a Mathias/Matthias Hug(g) was "married to a Henrietta Beck, since Frank was a small boy, and that he (Hug) had been a resident of Harris Co. for over 30 years". At the same time of this sworn statement, a letter of introduction was given to Frank Beck by the Sheriff of Victoria Co., Texas, not addressed to anyone. Letter just asks that courtesy be shown to Frank while he was in the Houston area. Within two weeks Frank Beck died at his home in Victoria Co., Texas. Cause: Unknown. Youngest, still living, daughter stated "he had cut a cow", felt bad, laid down in his bed and died. Have been unable to locate Frank's mother -Henrietta or this Mathias Hug. Unknown as to what port of entry they arrived; whether or not there was a father or siblings. Have not located HUG on a census. I know when he died, however, place of interment on his Death Certificate is not where he is buried - I have already looked at that Cemetery in Houston. He died of complications of frostbite to the feet. * On his Death Certificate - Mrs. M. Hug states no knowledge of the birth date or location of Mathias Hug. Nor does she know his parents names. That entire section is marked "Doesn't Know". Hope someone recognizes this elusive BECK line. Sharon CHILDERS Alderman Huffman, Texas sheria20@aol.com
