Hello All, I received a number of answers to my post, all with excellent information. Here's something someone else may be able to use: >To order copies of marrieage licenses: Send a request to the Victoria County >Clerk, 115 N. Bridge St., Victoria, TX 77901, they will make you a copy. Their fee is: $2.00 for >a plain copy and $7.00 for a certified. Give their full names, the date and include a self->addressed, stamped envelope and your check for which ever one you want. >This will be >about the most official record you are going to get and since it is from >a county clerk in the State of Texas it will be official, especially if you order the certified copy. >There will be no church record. The Methodist ministers took their records with them when >they moved on. They were not left at the church they were leaving. Thanks to everyone who sent such great information regarding Robert Hill. There is finally a crack in that brick wall thanks to the very helpful people on this list. grace Grace Adams Gleason Still looking for William Alexander Adams, b. VA 1827, d. Goliad Co. Hello, Victoria County List Members -- I am searching for information about and/or descendents of CARL and VICTORIA AUGUSTA STEINER. Carl STEINER was in Victoria by 1851 as deed records indicate he purchased land on the Coleto Creek in December of that year and established Steiner's Settlement (now Coletoville). His family followed from Upper Silesia (Oberschlesien) in December 1852, accompanied by several other families who settled in the present-day Coletoville community (KOBITZ, KORNFUHRER, WOLFF and VOGT, among others). Carl and Victoria Augusta STEINER had three daughters: 1. Anna Maria STEINER who married Henry C. GRAMANN and lived near Spring Creek 2. Whilhelmina (Minna or Minnie) STEINER who married Friederich SCHOB and lived on the STEINER homestead in Coletoville. 3. Anna Augusta STEINER who married Adolph GOLDMANN and lived in Victoria. I am a descendent of Minna and Fred SCHOB through their eldest daughter, ALVINA and JOHN BERGER, who married in 1897 and lived directly across the Coleto Creek in Goliad County (where the Coleto Creek Reservoir is now). My parents are EDNA EMELIA BERGER and JASPER JULIUS YOUNG, both desceased. I would be happy to hear from anyone having connections to the STEINER, SCHOB, GRAMANN or GOLDMANN families as well as anyone with connections to early settlers in the Coletoville or Raisin areas. Thanks much, Jayne Alvena Young Manuel
Grace, I hesitate to respond to your request for info on Robert Henry Hill, I will probably "muddy" the waters" even more. From Vol. 1, #1 of our local gen. soc. quarterly I found the following: Republic of Texas, Jackson Co. TX., Marriage Records, Clerk of the Court, L.S. Menefee....Groom, Benjamin White, Bride, Sarah Royster, 21 May 1840. Performed ceremony, Robert H. White, Minister of M.E. Church. THEN, I find in Vol. 1 #4 of our quarterly...Victoria Co. Marriage Records, transcribed Marriage Bk, 1, 1838-1870...Robert C. Hill to Agnes S. Menefee issued 13 June 1840. Vol. 4, #1 has a short history of the First United Methodist Church here in Victoria and it states that the church was formed in 1840 with Rev. P. Sneed as paster. No mention is made of your Hill as pastor in the Victoria church. Grace A. Gleason wrote: > > Dorothy, > > Thanks so much for the correct name, Norma Rutledge Grammer. Dorothy, Thanks so much for the correct name, Norma Rutledge Grammer. I got this from a typographically- challenged genealogist; however, it was all I had! My problem is that this man's name was Robert Henry Hill according to a letter written by my g/g/g/aunt who knew his family well. [3 of her sisters married his 3 sons.] The book says Robert C. Hill. If I can find the originals, maybe I can find the "error". If it was not a misreading of the original, it may have been a "minor" typo that wasn't caught by the proofreader. Robert Hill was an itinerant minister, believed to be Methodist. If so, he and Agnes were probably married by a Methodist minister. The Methodist church in Victoria was established the same year they were married, so I have hope that the originals are there. Since I am in VA, I am hoping someone will be able to tell me where these particular records are. Thanks again, grace
Hello All, According to Marriage Records of Early Texas 1824-1846 by Norman Rutledge Grammar, Robert C. Hill married Agnes S. Menefee, 03 June 1840, Victoria Co. TX. I would like to get copies of the original records of this marriage. Does anyone know where Mr. Grammar got his information? Thanks, grace

Hi, Listfriends, Doesn't anyone on this list want to post their questions on their Victoria families? There must be some of you waiting to see something posted here on YOUR family lines, and I know for a fact one person was waiting, just last week. Seeing none posted, he left in a huff, ...but, he had not posted his OWN queries, he was just out in cyberspace waiting on someone to do it for him, give him all the answers. He did give me his viewpoint of our forum, and it was not complimentary, but, he had a valid point. ( see further.) Well, most of our Victoria genealogists will try to help you, by privately answering, when questions comes across. BUT, I wish they would post ALL discussion of Victoria, questions or answers, on this forum, because, Roots does archive them and make them available for search way long after they were discussed. We do our Victoria Family searchers a disservice by not posting to TXVICTOR-L@rootsweb.com, because new people can't find any answers made previously. All they see is a "Billye D. Jackson" website, the person told me, and he was just about right. I do post a lot of url's, both found or sent me, but we need to initiate a VIctoria discussion here, it's what the space is actually for. He mentioned that the "last twenty postings had been just websites by Billye D. Jackson", and I'm sure he's dead right (make that 21 now)! We can post those good sites, I like them myself, but let's fluff out our material on Victoria with family talk, too. That said, I hope you Victorian's, or connected Victorian's living at a distance will just Ask Your Question, here! Help others, we will still continue to post url's helpful to genealogy in general, but we need Victoria. Let's try More Victoria Talk this new year? Please help us do that? bj, listmanager Marilyn Logan sent along one, and the other I found. Nice sites, both of them. So, for your research pleasure, ...while we wait for Victoria Questions, try these! bj http://genealogy.bb.prodigy.net/ http://www.stategensites.com/
This message is just a reminder for an interesting History on TV TONIGHT. bj Check your TV guide for A&E tonight at 7pm. "THE CROSSING: Jeff Daniels stars as George Washington in this new drama, the Revolutionary War story of the then-general's campaign against the Hessians in 1776. He launched that attack with greatly diminished troops who were young, exhausted and hungry. Their crossing of the Delaward river led to the Battle of Trenton, which turned the tide of the war.. Roger Rees also appears. (2 hrs.)" from the Dallas Morning News TV Week, January 9-15, 2000.
Is there anyone of you in the Victoria area and/or on this list, who might help our resident newspaper genealogist, Martha Jones? She mentioned to me this: "I need some assistance. I would like to borrow someone's CD's with the early census for KY, specifically 1790, 1800, 1810 and 1820. I want the check the records for Greenup County that eventually became a part of Boyd and Carter counties." Are there cd's on the reconstructed census for those first two years that anyone has and can lend her? Do any of you have the actual census, not the index, for 1810 and 1820 for KY? Do you have the 1810 or 1820 Census Index on cd? That area pre 1804 was formed this way: first/ KY Co. VA>then Fayette>then Mason, then ..the latter two counties later (beg. in 1838). If you have them, don't want to lend them, perhaps you will write her and ask for names to look up for her? She can be reached at mjones@viptx.net, above. Listmanager, bj
