    1. VCGS History Book
    2. Billye D. Jackson
    3. Thought you'd want to know that Doris Obsta, Editor in Charge of the Victoria County History Book Project, and other VCGS members have gone today to Austin to sign the formal contract for our book. Meanwhile, you might want these notes passed along to you. Yes, you may still submit via computer, even, to Doris Obsta, Editor, at bobsta@viptx.net your story for our book, THROUGH 31 MARCH only. After that, it's too late, the door is shut. You can send your entire article, pictures included, via comp, if you like, or through ground mail, if you think it can make it in, in time, if you are out of town. She said please contact her at the above email, as the College office computer and phone is busy, busy, and it might not get through. She is working at home on the project also, and will catch your articles there, for certain. This will be a two volume, at least, set of hard back books, navy blue cover, I'm told, and will have over 1000 stories in it, as of now. There are huge histories of businesses, and old places now gone, that dedicated helpers have hunted up material on, for the books. It will have an everyname index, and will be sold at an advanced sales price of $80.00 per set, but when that offer is closed, sets will be sold for $125.00 per set. You may want to go ahead and get your set ordered now. We don't know when the prepublication price will end yet, or at least, I'm not aware of it. They WILL let everyone know, though, pre closing of the prepub price. Probably via our website or email list here, and in the Advocate, I would think. Eakin Publishing of Austin, a division of it, will be doing the book for us. ( Northwest something or other, division of Eakin, I forget.) It's a reputable company. The letter on the book has gone out to all who preordered the book. I can't tell you anymore than this, and hope I have it all straight. You need to email Doris if you have further questions re the book. I haven't any other information. Shipping will be $10.00 EXTRA, if you want them shipped. Be sure and send along the extra cost listed below, if there is any, and your check made out to VCGS for 80.00 or if shipping it, 90.00, and your article if you are submitting it. Send your mail to VCGS, P.O. Box 413, Victoria, TX, 77902-0413. Send your email submission of articles to Doris Obsta, VCGS BOOK EDITOR, bobsta@viptx.net We may be putting a form online on our website, http://www.viptx.net/vcgs shortly, if it's not there already. ***You will recall you are allowed two pages, double spaced, courier size 10 font, and you need to also send along an index for it, not included in your article two pages. You are allowed free one picture of a single column width, and if you want more pictures, or wider column pictures, those cost $5.00 more. Extra lines of print cost 40 cents per line. You may use as many photos or lines/pages as you like, it just costs you for it. Two pages and one picture is free, as mentioned here. Hurry, WE can still make the deadline, and I do mean WE!! (one done, one almost, and one in the works, boy, am I busy!) This is my last transmission on the subject, I have to get busy and type, MINE. bj

    1. St. Mary's Catholic Church website, Victoria, TX & Shari Simond's Computer Column, Victoria
    2. Billye D. Jackson
    3. I saw the above site in one of Shari Simond's Sunday Victoria Advocate columns, which deal with various sorts of computer online sites and include some internet genealogy. She's mentioned this one, and it's of Victoria TXVICTOR-L interest. http://home.viptx.net/~stmary/ This is a good site to look at the oldest Victoria Catholic Church built in early Victoria. It has pictures of it as it changed through the years. I think it's interesting, it has a history of it online, plus a couple of their beautiful stained glass windows. (Wish they had shown all of them!) You might want take a peek at this nice site, especially if your roots here are early Catholic, or even if you aren't of Catholic lineage, I bet you like looking at it. It's a beautiful church, inside and out, and the pictures here show all of that. http://www.net-dispatch.net/ While I'm here, let me mention to you more about Shari, who publicized the St. Mary's page. She has an online column at the above site. If you haven't looked at Shari Simond's Victoria Advocate column, or if you can't get the paper with her computer articles, you can at least find her online at the above address. She's a top-notch computer person, and a TOP online genealogist, too. She doesn't do genealogy research work for anyone, though, nor answer questions about our families. Just thought I'd mention that so she won't get requests for searches. Shari Simond's most recent article on genealogy is http://www.net-dispatch.net/archives/10-march-2000.html Her other pages with computer articles are located at her Archives page http://www.net-dispatch.net/archives/ where you will see as you scan the list some other genealogy articles. Have fun! (and thanks, Shari, for your regular help to us computer user folk, via that column) bj

    1. Anybirthday.com site
    2. Billye D. Jackson
    3. This site came to me from a friend, and it's very interesting. I've included the notations that came to me, with it. As for my own experience with the page, (differing from the note) I popped in some seven names, and NONE showed up. You'll notice at the top that there's another site to follow, and if you do, it takes you to one to fill in info for a different search, then comes up with a $39.00 charge to get it the record. I sort of think maybe the lack of information on the first page of "anybirthday.com" is an enticement to get you to go to the OTHER page, where you will have to pay. Use your own judgment. I think it's a come-on site, myself. I would never put out the money for a search, even though they are using public records for their information. Quite legal, and there are other sites that do the same. So, no need to get in a tizzy, our names are out there everywhere, and as genealogists, that's the real idea of hunting family, getting the names out to the public. This site might really help someone who is willing to pay, so I won't down it a lot, but I recommend you take it with a grain of salt. bj <snip>a website that lists everyone and their birthdays. It is http://www.anybirthday.com/ I have already deleted many of my family members. If you do not want your family members listed here are the steps to delete them. At the main page go to the bottom of the page, click on FAQ. On the next page go to How Can I remove and click privacy statement. On the next page scroll down to "Opt Out Option." Click on it. It will take you to the page to delete yourself and family members. You will need the persons first & last name, birthrate and zip code to delete. To remove more family, repeat the steps.

I just need to get myself up to date, and let you check them out for yourselves. Hoping your day is going GREAT. Don't forget, the DEAD, DEAD, DEADline for the county book history entries is, as Editor in Charge Doris Obsta says, is 31 March, and not one word later, so HURRY UP. 2. David W. Hooper
    3. Ok List, Here is something Billye has been trying to get us to do. While reading some of old posts, which I had saved because of the good sites, I came across one she was encouraging us to send in information to the list. So here is my contribution and query, somewhat late though. Mathew G. Bobbitt and his wife Martha Williams Bobbitt, and their first four children moved into Victoria County in 1856 from Gibson Co., Tennessee. The family eventually settled on land in Western Victoria Co. towards Meyersville in DeWitt Co. Two more known children were born in Victoria Co. The children of Mathew and Martha Bobbitt were James Robert Bobbitt, born 1849, Gibson Co., Tenn. and married Martha Ann Adcock (born 1851, Alabama) March 29, 1870, Victoria, Texas. Virginia Ann Bobbitt, born 1851, Gibson Co., Tenn., married R. M. Seaton on April 30, 1867, Victoria Co., Texas. Sallie W. Bobbitt, born 1853, Gibson Co., Tenn, married W. H. Baker, May 15 1875, Victoria, Texas. Samuel M. Bobbitt, born 1855, Gibson Co., Tenn., married Mary V. Waggoner July 4, 1877, Victoria, Texas Thomas W. Bobbitt, born 1857, Victoria Co., Texas, married Florence A. Teuton, Sept. 8 1881, Goliad Co., texas Jerimiah Summerfield Bobbitt, born 1861, Victoria Co., Texas married Katie Alice ? about 1882. Not sure where. Possibly Jack Co., Texas. Martha Williams Bobbitt died 1865, Victoria Co., Texas Mathew G. Bobbitt married a second time on Nov. 30, 1876, Victoria, Texas. to Margaret Coolety, born 1835 Tenn. She was the sister of a Minister of the Gospel who had settled in Western Victoria Co. from Tennessee. Anyone having any information on these people and would like to share information, please let me know. Thanks David Hooper
