    1. Lewis and Clark x2
    2. Billye D. Jackson
    3. This is another site pertaining to the last. Edna LaFour just now sent it to us. I didn't see any really useful info re descendants of the L & C's, but there were a LOT of nice links to useful research sites there listed under their genealogy sites. I did like those. Try this for more on the history of the project. And, if you happen to be a descendant, they've got a First Families sort of thing going, Descendants Of... Thanks, Edna. 1. New at Rootsweb-Texas, and a piece of Victoria Co. 1860 census
    2. Billye D. Jackson
    3. Thought you might want to see some of these new things uploaded to TX GenWeb this week. The Victoria 1860 census is one family someone has submitted of their ancestors, it appears. 3. The newest discussion at NARA re record price changes is posted on their website, and currently making the rounds of various mail lists. They allow snailmail responses until 25 June, if you care to comment. They don't want email comments. Some of the prices are a big jump for us. Martha Jones, our local genealogy columnist mentioned the changes a few weeks back in her column. This is the most recent info on the subject. Read it for yourself. 3. This came in from list member Teresa Iraggi. Thanks for the site! Besides announcing a coming event, I thought it might be useful for those of you who may have friends or family who are new into research. The site has a page to download all those paper forms we used to use, and sometimes still do. You can send your friends to get them here, free. Bj - ---------------------------- I received this from another list, just thought everyone would like to know. A new series of 'Ancestors' programs, a family history and genealogy television series, will begin feeding to PBS stations in June. 2. If you don't subscribe to the free mailing list at Rootsweb, IMO, you should consider doing that. They send letters periodically and tell us what's new out there. This is a piece of one that just came in, and I thought you'd like the concise information on one website listing all those questions the various census takers asked Every Ten Years, which is the page title. Copying here the whole Roots paragraph because they explain better, and give another site for forms. Bj-Listmanager SOME USEFUL URLs. To learn exactly what sort of information was collected each year, take a look at "Every Ten Years" http://www.genealogy.com/13_every.html. From 1790 through 1920, you will find a detailed list of what you can expect to see on a census form. And, to help you keep that information organized when you are researching with the census, be sure to print a set of census abstracts from http://www.genealogy.com/00000061.html. Census abstracts are blank forms which mimic each year's census forms. As you carry out your census research, you copy the information you find onto these forms. This helps ensure that you don't miss any important information.

    3. Some of us have fairly large files of genealogy records. Saw this website mentioned today on the FTW discussion list, and looked it over. I like what it does, thought you also might find a use for it. It's a free download, fast, and can install itself, also comes with uninstall function if you don't like it. It has screenshots to see what it does and how it works, the link is over on the left. Check that before you download it, to see if you want it. I downloaded the first option, the one that installs automatically. [Lazy.] bj~~the genealogically useful+free stuff junkie http://members.xoom.com/mbjorklu/file_splitter/download.html

    2. This page has some interesting connector links listed. I checked a few. If you look at the Tax lists, notice that the transcriptions for the letter "s" in names has been read as "f", the proper alphabetic letter for an "s" back then, i.e., Perfons (Persons) I especially liked the link off it leading to PA online resources, Bridgette's Page, think it was. Nice one for GA tax list information, and for actual names on CT/NJ tax records. I didn't check the page for "chickens" and I noticed the one for Victoria, is Victoria, Australia, not our Victoria Co., TX. bj http://www.vanished.com/pages/unusual.html

    3. Had a short note in from Grace Gleason, of the list, saying " Looking for E.F. ALBERTY in Arkansas, I opened the 1860 census index from GenealogyLibrary.com. The first county on the first page happened to be Arkansas Co. The first name under Arkansas Co. was "ABBERTY, E.F." Talk about a misspelling. Sometimes, serendipity has to take a hand in genealogy!! This is a spelling I would never have thought of using. Or is that just using UN-reasonable consonants? :-)) grace " So very true, I rack/wrack/wreck/wreak :) my pore ol brain trying to think of any other spelling, and like she says, it is worthwhile, but at times, they just WANT to be found, the book falls into our hand. Thanks for the comment, Grace, I like knowing there's someone out there who notices what we do/don't say. bj

    3. ARKANSAS -- 244,456 General Land Office Records to 1908 <http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/arkland/arkland.pl> LOUISIANA -- 126,347 General Land Office Records to 1908 <http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/laland/laland.pl> This came from the Roots Mail list announcements. To encourage you to search them, I found in AR, a record this morning that I believe is my ancestor, and of course, spelled in a way I hadn't checked closely enough for. Caught him red-handed today, maybe! DATABASE HINTS: When you are looking for a particular surname spelling, you have a strong chance of never finding it in a database, but there's a way to fool a database--which only looks for EXACTLY what you type in for a search. You can easily not think of a particular odd spelling, or maybe forget to look for one. Try this when looking into surname searches on a database, instead of a regular surname search. First, only type the FIRST letter of the last name. Then, go through all the alphabet vowel's after that, adding one at a time to the first letter. If you still haven't found it, and think it's probably there, go back and only type the FIRST letter, and let it pull up Every Single First Letter name. This will be a big search, but when it loads up, you can scroll every surname that ever began with that name, and possibly find it, if it's hidden under some odd spelling. Don't get hung on one spelling, the records show names under so many variable spellings, you can hardly ever think of them all. It hinders your finding your people, if you insist on sticking to a name just because OUR family spelled it that way. ( sometime I even begin again and use the most often used reasonable consonant's after the first letter of the name, and they DO turn up that way, too, i.e., Birdwell-Bridwell, which is how I found my man today, right place, right time...If he's mine!) Old hands at database searching, or seasoned genealogy searchers already know this, but newer ones might not, and these are the folks for whom this message is intended. bj, your TXVICTOR-L list manger
