    3. Posted on: Victoria Co. Tx Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Victoria?read=25 Surname: Pierpont, Frisbee, Parrott ------------------------- The 1850 Jackson Co., TX, census shows the family of William Pierpont. He was 53, born in Connecticut; his wife Elizabeth E. (Parrott), 43, was born in Pennsylvania. They were married in 1845 (by John McCullough, Presbyterian) so the two older children listed, W. J. D. and Agnes A. M., were from his prior marriage to Sophronia Frisbie. (John, the youngest was b. in Tx, as was Agnes---W. J. D.'s birthplace and date were left blank). The 1860 census index shows that Agnes (who'd then have been 23 yrs old) was in Victoria County. Will someone please provide me with the info. from the census entry? William, accord. to the Handbook of Texas (aka The Handbook of Texas Online), died in 1866 in Wharton Co., TX. Are there any Pierponts buried in Victoria County? (Perhaps William was not residing in Wharton Co. but died while visiting or on business.) What became of the children? Are there descendants in Victoria County? Any assistance w. this matter will be very much appreciated.

(Mail groups at Roots can't read HTML) bj On Rootsweb notes that came in today there is a note about being able to buy various census microfilm, and other things, for home use. Prices are good, but the reason I wanted to call it to your attention is the map genealogy value, for free. Some of you may want to see the various census year maps they have there that tell which years have what census. Look at them, they show what the state areas were on the census years. You can make a printed copy for reference, if you don't have it. Valuable information, it is available other places, but this is nice. Just click on the years to get to the maps under the dates. 3. Good Morning. I was just looking at a fine website, full of information, and thought I'd share it with you all. Be sure to look under What's New, there is a batch of information under there, including bible and other records, plus newspaper accounts listing migrations of families into Texas. This site has a lot of source records for us, if Giles County, TN is your search area. I noticed one piece of it dealt with early settlers, and some with land being laid out or Middle Tennessee. 3. Edna LaFour sent along this piece of information. Thank you, Edna. Bj listmanager Like most people who are doing genealogy research, I prowl through cemeteries taking pictures of grave markers to remember names, dates, etc. Over the years I have acquired a nice pile of some very old markers. Usually I would scan them and send them to whom ever requested the information. Now I found a site that I can list person, scan the picture of the marker, scan a picture of the person and include a brief bio on them. It is free and simple to use. You can search this site by famous graves and non famous graves. Also by surname, state, county or cemetery. Even if you don't have a picture of the marker or person it is a great site to share info with others. http://www.findagrave.com -------------------------------- End of TXVICTOR-D Digest V00 Issue #75 ************************************** From root@lists6.rootsweb.com Tue Aug 1 19:19:38 2000 Return-Path: <root@lists6.rootsweb.com> Received: from lists6.rootsweb.com (lists6.rootsweb.com [63.92.80.125]) by listsearches.rootsweb.com (8.10.1/8.10.1) with ESMTP id e722Jcw26098 for <indexer@listsearches.rootsweb.com>; Tue, 1 Aug 2000 19:19:38 -0700 Received: (from root@localhost) by lists6.rootsweb.com (8.10.1/8.10.1) id e722Jdh17065 for indexer@listsearches.rootsweb.com; Tue, 1 Aug 2000 19:19:39 -0700 Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 19:19:39 -0700 Message-Id: <200008020219.e722Jdh17065@lists6.rootsweb.com> From: TXVICTOR-D-request@rootsweb.com Subject: TXVICTOR-D Digest V00 #75 X-Loop: TXVICTOR-D@rootsweb.com X-Mailing-List: <TXVICTOR-D@rootsweb.com> archive/volume00/75 Precedence: list MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/digest; boundary="----------------------------" To: TXVICTOR-D@rootsweb.com Reply-To: TXVICTOR-L@rootsweb.com ------------------------------ Content-Type: text/plain TXVICTOR-D Digest Volume 00 : Issue 75 Today's Topics: #1 Taking Tombstone Pictures ["coffey" <coffey@viptx.net>] #2 more on gravemarkers ["coffey" <coffey@viptx.net>] Administrivia: To unsubscribe from TXVICTOR-D, send a message to TXVICTOR-D-request@rootsweb.com that contains in the body of the message the command unsubscribe and no other text. We'll have to check the next yard sale for a tombstone-mirror. Bj, listmanager "I have noticed on several of the list I and my wife subscribe to request for pictures taken of tombstones around the country. Here are a couple of tips I have learned that will insure a decent result. Hold camera at same level of stone. Place mirror on the ground in front of the stone to reflect light up onto the stone. Use a 400 speed film or better. Use these tips and your trip will not be wasted and you will be able to read the inscriptions on the stones in the pictures. Works on weathered stones as well as new ones. Happy headstone hunting. Robert (Gill)"

(For more information on the Images Online Project see, http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/news/articles/1931.asp.) Each Civil War pension card--a record of a veteran's application for federal support--records the veteran's name and the state in which the application was received. (Because these pension files were for federal benefits, this collection only contains the names of Union veterans.) If a widow or a child filed the application, his or her name and relevant information is included. Until now, the pension cards were only available through microfilm copies contained at the National Archives and limited repositories. Ancestry's existing Civil War Pension Index contains a link to a digitized image of the index card itself. This image will contain additional information on the individual, such as unit of service, date of filing and application, and certificate numbers for the pension case file (which often contains additional pages of individual information) housed at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. Bj listmanager Relationship of Cousins For many once you get beyond those first cousins you grew up with, understanding relationships is a very confusing concept. Add terms like "removed," "double," and "cross" and even the stout of heart are likely to throw up their hands in frustration. The most important point for beginning to figure out a cousinship is to first determine the common relative. This could be a grandfather or a fourth great grandmother. That is the first issue. Then it is necessary to plot out each of the direct lineages from that common relative. It is likely to look something like: .....Great Grandfather ...... | | Your......siblings....Their Grandfather Grandfather | | Your ....1st cousin... Their Father Father | | You .....2nd cousin ...Them As you go down each generation you add one to the cousin relationship. Of course not every cousinship is this simple. There will be times when your number of generations is more or less from the common relative than the other individual. In that case you add the "removes." Using our example above, your child would be a second cousin, once removed from your second cousin. You are a first cousin once removed from their father. Once in awhile to add to the confusion, two brothers will marry two sisters. Their offspring are considered double first cousins. This is because instead of just sharing one set of common ancestors, they share both sets. When you and your sister each have a child, those children are known as cross cousins. They are still first cousins, but they are cross first cousins. This is not as common a term as the ones discussed above, but you may stumble across it. Here are some web sites to help you in figuring out cousin relationships: Cousin Number Counter-Relationship Chart http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/1956/cousin.ht ml Cousins: How Far Removed? http://www.cswnet.com/~mgoad/cousins.htm Cousins Explained http://www.obliquity.com/family/misc/cousin.html What Is A First Cousin, Twice Removed? http://www.genealogy.com/genealogy/16_cousn.html Finally, an excellent book that offers great insight into kinship and relationships of cousins is Jackie Smith Arnold's "Kinship, It's All Relative" published by Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc. You can find out more about this book by visiting Genealogy Publishing Company, Inc. (http://www.genealogybookshop.com/). 3. Thought you all might enjoy this story as much as I did. Too, too right! Another friend and I were discussing this very thing earlier today. Someone in her family has THE only record of her father's birth, put away someplace among his papers, and he doesn't know where. Plus, he's very elderly. Friend is worried, naturally. Reminds me of my own mother's birth record. She was dismayed to find her birth was only recorded in an old Singer Sewing Machine manual, the only place it was ever written down. Of course, the machine never was far from her mother's hand, but still, it never made any bible page. (and I'm happy to even have the manual) This came in from another list. Billye D. Clarkson in Victoria county..location: Victoria. I have been searching my paternal grandfather, Alexander Wilson (A.W.)Clarkson fruitlessly for several years. The 1880 federal census for Macon county (Decatur), Illinois indicates that he was born in N.C. and mentions a "Gibaratta" or "Gilerato". Other than that most of the vital records are non existent. I am hoping that someone in Victoria may have something that will help me inch forward. Their first born was named Thomas which may mean that A.W.'s father had that given names. The Wilson could be the maiden surname of A.W.'s mother. I hope that this will ring a little bell with someone there. Thank you, Dorathy Luedecke Hardie Assistant County Coordinator, Goliad County, TX adhardie@sprynet.com While on a trip recently to Goliad and Corpus Christi, I had the opportunity to visit the Goliad Co Historical Society Musuem, just off the square in Goliad, Tex. I discovered that they have a number of books for sale, including "The History and Heritage of Goliad County(a reprint of the original) and the Cemetery Census Book. Although they are currently updating this book, it will be a while before the book is ready. While in Goliad I had the opportunity to visit with Mrs Doris Freer, the president of the Historical Society. She indicated that the Society had substantial funds tied up in the two books and would like to sell their supply. Could the Goliad Gen Web Page help out by advertising the availability of these books. They aree both valuable resource items for any genealogists during research in Goliad Co. -History and Heritage of Goliad Co. $40.00 each plus $5.00 for shipping and handling.
