Could you tell us what Homer is close to? Sounds real interesting, a ghost town I guess. Probably a good story behind the town of Homer.
>From what I could tell, the old town of Homer was on Old 63 between the new hwy 63 and hwy 69. I never pinpointed the exact area of the ghost town. I read somewhere that there is only a couple of houses there now, and that all the rest of the town is gone. I talked to a gentleman on Old 63 that, when I asked him where Homer was, told me "your in Homer". I never actually saw anything that gave the evidence I needed to prove that I was "exactly" in the place where the "bustling" town of Homer was. Wouldn't it be nice if we could have a historical landmark put there so we could find the exact spot? I'm sure there is a someone out in that area that knows exactly where the town used to be. Thanks to the man I asked, I did find the "Old Homer Cemetery" so I must have been in the right place. Someone referred me to an Angelina County historian and I wrote to her, I'm anxiously awaiting her letter, she has done a lot of research on Homer, Texas. The Handbook of Texas online says,: "From 1858 through the early 1880s Homer was the most important center in the county and had the first established church and most of the county's major businesses as well as its first mechanical sawmill." Apparently, there was also a ferry out in that area called BROWN'S FERRY. I would like to learn more about that, too, because I'm sure it was often traveled by my gg-grandfather William T. Holland.
