    1. [TXTYLER-L] Old Doucette Cemetery

    3. There is some additional information that I should have included in my original query. The Doucette Cemetery is listed in the publication *Tyler County Texas Gravestone Inscriptions*, which includes the description, "Located next to the Doucette Water Department. Only one gravestone remains. The others were destroyed." My g-grandfather, Grant S. Hammerly, was buried there in 1896 after his death in a steam locomotion boiler explosion. It is my understanding that other men were buried there later after the boiler located at this spot exploded (I can't recall the date of this tragic accident.) The water department is located adjacent to the Doucette Post Office, and when I visited there earlier this year I spoke with a woman in the post office who described the cemetery and told me it was quite controversial when the land was cleared as the site had contained some beautiful trees. I don't recall when this occurred and would appreciate any additional information that anyone may provide. -----Original Message----- From: David Rudd Hamerly [mailto:dave@hamcomm.com] Sent: Friday, December 07, 2001 10:45 PM To: TXTYLER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [TXTYLER-L] Possible Missing Cemetery This discussion calls to mind my experience last spring when my brother and I traveled from Austin to Tyler County to look for my great-grandfather's grave. We discovered that the graveyard in Doucette was now private property and all that was left was a piece of one headstone leaning against a fence that surrounds a water boiler. Does anyone have additional information on this cemetery? Is anyone familiar with the process to establish a marker displayed where the gravesites once were? As to what to look for..............A plowed field where the cemetery is supposed to be. City development, even if that's just electrical wires. Signs that indicate that someone wanted the land enough to remove the headstones of a cemetery. Wish I had better directions. This is all we have. donna ----- Original Message ----- From: "Melody Anderson" <mjahca@swbell.net> To: <TXTYLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 07, 2001 5:15 PM Subject: Re: [TXTYLER-L] Possible Missing Cemetery OK>>>>>I called the Tyler Cnty Heritage Soc........out at Heritage Village, talked to them, found out there really is a Holly Fork Rd,......and then called the sheriff's dept, and they told me exactly where it is.........it's not right off of 190E.....it's quite a ways out in the KUNTRYYYYY.......but weather permitting, I'll make my way out there....maybe tomorrow.....is there anything in particular that you want me to look for????
