There is some additional information that I should have included in my original query. The Doucette Cemetery is listed in the publication *Tyler County Texas Gravestone Inscriptions*, which includes the description, "Located next to the Doucette Water Department. Only one gravestone remains. The others were destroyed." My g-grandfather, Grant S. Hammerly, was buried there in 1896 after his death in a steam locomotion boiler explosion. It is my understanding that other men were buried there later after the boiler located at this spot exploded (I can't recall the date of this tragic accident.) The water department is located adjacent to the Doucette Post Office, and when I visited there earlier this year I spoke with a woman in the post office who described the cemetery and told me it was quite controversial when the land was cleared as the site had contained some beautiful trees. I don't recall when this occurred and would appreciate any additional information that anyone may provide. -----Original Message----- From: David Rudd Hamerly [mailto:dave@hamcomm.com] Sent: Friday, December 07, 2001 10:45 PM To: TXTYLER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [TXTYLER-L] Possible Missing Cemetery This discussion calls to mind my experience last spring when my brother and I traveled from Austin to Tyler County to look for my great-grandfather's grave. I too have a relative I am researching in Tyler county. My GG Grendfather Barnett (Barney) Bentley died sometime in the 1870s. He was born in Georgia in 1818 and lived in Woodville. I have been unable to locate where he was buried. He too might have been buried in this "missing cemetery" perhaps with his first wife Malinda Brasher who died about 1860. Please keep me updated. If a cemetary is "moved", or "re-located", wouldn't something have to be publlished in the local newspaper, regarding this? If memory serves me correct, just 2 or 3 years ago, I read something in the paper, about a cemetary possibly being moved, to make way for a new highway. This was in Chambers county, and had nothing to do with Tyler county. However, I think they were trying to locate anyone having interest in the folks buried in that particular cemetary. I'm not sure if they would have had to actually move everyone's remains, as well as headstones, etc. However, maybe it would be a good idea to search the local papers, to see if something may have been publised, informing the public of such wishes. I'm sure there would be some sort of legal ramifications to doing something like this. Pam
Dear Trey, I have been researching various cemeteries in Tyler County. I am currently out of town working and I am unable to search my master files. I am guessing, but I have video and camera documentation of a few tyler county cemeteries. I will have to look and see. RAWLS is one of the particular surnames I am researching. It will be a few weeks before I can assure myself this particular tombstone doesor does not belong in a cemetery in TYLER, St. Augustine, Angelina, or Jasper Counties. I have found all this talk of a "missing cemetery" very interesting. My gg-grandfather, William T. (WT) Holland b. ca 1830 GA. died in Tyler county in 1866, and I've been unable to locate his grave. Maybe he was buried in this missing cemetery??? He lived East of Colmesneil. Please keep us updated. By the way, who did the gravestone belong to??? Anyone know? Donna, I just got thru looking in the cemetery book that I have, Tyler County Cemeteries, published in 1975, and the only Grimes cemetery I found is not on 190E.....it's north of Colmesneil, off of 255, close to the Neches River....and the listing of names shows no Rawls, however most of the listings for the cemeteries in this book were done before 1969......so it is dated.....but if the people died in the 1800's.....then they should be there if their tombstones were there back when they did the listings........(confusing enough??hehe>>>) Anyway, if someone can give me some better directions, I'll try to make my way out there in a day or two.....ok?? Melody
Donna, I saw that message earlier today, and I live right here in Woodville, think it's not to far from me, just need better directions.....I'll look at the cemetery book that I have and see if I can locate it.....but it'll be over the weekend before I can do it. Been gone most of the day, came home to see the other messages....will be happy to check it out if possible. Melody
Hi Folks, As most of you know a tombstone was found in the front yard of a woman in Hood County. A query went out to RootsWeb mail list in an attempt to locate the stone's home. This discovery lends itself to another question. This was an out of the way cemetery. Were the stones removed to make way for farm land, or suburban development? Is there anyone in, or near Tyler County who could drive out to the cemetery to see what's going on?
