Hi Melody, This is a little funny. Thanks for the information, I had just looked up the article myself! I live on the outskirts of Houston and receive the chronicle so I accessed the archives via internet and took a look at the article! But, I want to thank you tremendously for your effort, that was really nice of you. I think, it may have given me a lead though, I'm going to look in Natitoches, LA and see if maybe my HOLLAND family traveled the same route as the Sturrocks. Ya know, this might be something I should share with the list. Because I am a subscriber I can do look-ups for others. Thanks, Michelle Holland ----- Original Message ----- From: "Melody Anderson" <mjahca@swbell.net> To: <TXTYLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2002 8:42 PM Subject: Re: [TXTYLER-L] Irish settlers > hello, looking in on your talk, and was interested in "IRISH" settlers up in this corner of the world (EAST TEXAS)....called a friend who was a Chronicle subscriber, and she looking in the archives, and found the article, about Rockland and the cemetery there. However, the family that is referred to were the Sturrock's, and they were originally from Scotland. If you want a copy of the article, I can send it to you. After reading it, I realized that I had probably read it when it originally was in the Chronicle, we were subscribers back then. It is an interesting article. I'm interested in any Irish O'Connor's/O'Conner's, or just Conner's up in this part of the country. Thanks. I was just speaking with a friend that was going through a lot of old stuff that she had kept. One item was a newspaper article that I thought might interest some of you. It was about the first Irish settlers in Rockland, Rep. of TX -"that was to become Tyler, Co., TX". They were from Dundee, Scotland. It goes on to tell about the cemetery, etc. If any of you are interested, you can probably contact the "Houston Chronicle" in Houston, TX. The article was in the "State" section of the paper on Oct. 15, 1995. Marlene
I still have not found the birthplace or parents of my gg-grandfather William T. (W.T.) Holland. So I guess it is time to post it again. I am searching for any information on William T. HOLLAND born GEORGIA?, county unknown. I know he was married to a Susan A.(Unknown) and that they resided in TYLER COUNTY, Texas from about 1861 to 1866 where he died and a probate record is found in Tyler County. He owned 320 acres in Tyler County referred to as Millner's headright. At his death many people owed him money included names such as: ARRANT, CHANCY, ODELL, STEELE, SIMS, WILLIAMS, MIDDLEBROOKS, SNELL, MASSENGILL, DOUGHORTY, CHUMBLY, DR. C. MCCULLUGH, JOHNSON, ALLISON, BORDERS, NEWMAN, TAYLOR, RIGSBY. Looks like he had a lot of dealings with one JAMES W. MASSENGILL. I haven't found him on any census record, but his widow and children on the 1870 Tyler County census: Susan (widow), (children:)Council O., Benjamin, Mary, Mitchel Gilbert, and William T. jr (along with another mystery child named Rufus whom could not have been his) Susan A. UNKNOWN remarries in Tyler County in 1880 to a JW DAVIS. William T. may have first married a Mary BLACKWELL, but this may be a rumor. I have also combed Tyler County and have not found his grave or that of Benjamin or Mary who may have died prior to 1880. Any information would be helpful. Thank you, Michelle Holland Porter, Texas Researching: HOLLAND, LAYTON, BURNMAN, THOMASSON, TERRY, PERKINS, BEARD, ROBERTS and many more....
