Just thought maybe some of you on TXTYLER-L might have the answer to Virginia's question. Anybody know a Dr. Haley from San Augustine?? Barbara Yancey Dore (aka) [email protected] ---------- From: Virginia Cottrell Sent: Friday, June 06, 1997 1:13 AM To: Barbara Dore Subject: San Augustine Question A couple of years ago, a Dr. HALEY from San Augustine contacted me about mutual family roots. I've sent a couple of snail letters but got no response. My question is: Has Dr. Haley died? I found a Mary J. HALEY listed there and suspect she may be the widow, if he is deceased. Just thought I'd see if you knew before picking up the phone and calling her. Thanks in advance. Virginia Cottrell [email protected] ------------------------------

Does anyone know what "Ghost River Ferry" is? the name of the ferry or the name of a community? Since the postings about the COLLIERS came out, I have come across an interesting bit of history in my research file. You all may already know this (?) Hope it helps someone add a little flavor to their research; it did mine. (I have no way of knowing if this is common-knowledge to all of you, so please forgive.) It was prepared for a family reunion and is quoted in full as follows. It has information about A(bner) B(elcher) COLLIER and others in that area. I have double checked it for accuracy and the misspellings ("try-weekly" and "excellance" and punctuation are as in the original). It is not signed, but a typed signature block appears at the bottom. ================================ GHOST RIVER FERRY: (ON THE NECHES) Smith Ferry, Texas. Located in the North East corner of Tyler County. Where boats docked operating from Beaumont, Texas, in the 1870's. This ferry was operated by R. R. Smith along with a small country style store, with Post Office in one corner of the building. Mail was received and dispatched try-weekly by horse-back Star route carrier. In 1894 A. B. Collier, the Husband of Serena Davis (Collier) obtained a 2 year contract carrying the mail, and said Billie Davis was substitute carrier. In 1902 the Post Office was moved some 3 miles West to S. P. Deans Small saw-mill and Cotton Gin. And remained in that vicinity until it was discontinued, in 1931. Dean mill cut out years ago. There were four Postmasters served at different terms They were R. R. Smith, S. P. Dean, Emma Holton (Baken), and Madison Minyard. Also Dr.E.T.Minyard M.D. However, the Star route was continued with the addition of box service. To Minyard, Davis, Conner & Grimes Settlements. LOOK: The first Protestant church in Texas, was erected in San Augustine County, Texas in 1829. And its founder was Littleton Fowler, and his remains are buried underneath the pulpit of a Methodist Church nine miles East of San Augustine, Texas. And his monument serves as the pulpit for the church. It is true all of us enjoy being remembered by friends and relatives on birthdays and anniversaries especially. Hi! I posted this to the DAVIS and COLLIER lists, but thought some of you might not be on them? I thought I'd post an interesting tidbit to a couple of mailing lists about the first wife of Abner Belcher COLLIER as well as ask some questions: BIRTH: Serena Melvina DAVIS, daughter of William DAVIS and Francis Adline HEATHCOCK/HITHCOX was born 20 June1875 - per Davis Bible page. MARRIAGE: Serena Melvina DAVIS m. Abner Belcher COLLIER, 2 Nov 1890 in Tyler Co, TX (see Barbara's webpage http://members.aol.com/RootsLady/collier/coll_9.htm ) DEATH: I only have an "oral history" note on the bottom of a family group worksheet has that she died of a "snake bite in 1897". (Information not confirmed) QUESTION: Does anyone know *when* and *where* she died, and *where* she's buried? Since Abner COLLIER m2 on 26 Jan 1897 to Abbie M. RALPH, Jasper Co. TX, perhaps the date that I have for Serena's death is incorrect? Claire English ------------------------------
HI, I have been sort of sitting on the side lines watching hoping to see some notes fly by about the families I am tracing, but I haven't seen any. So here I go... Is any one doing research on the GENTRY or REED families in Tyler County? I am really interested in trying to trace Benjamin Elliot GENTRY back to Georgia. I believe he came to Texas around 1858 and married Sarah Florida REED. They appear on the 1860 census around Woodville. Russell REED brought his family to Tyler County in the 1850s. Benjamin and some of the REED brothers served in the CSA, Texas Infantry, around Sabine Pass. Benjamin was promoted to Captain during the war. After the war Benjamin moved to Brazos County. The REEDs stayed in Tyler County, where many of them are buried. I would like one day to visit the Woodville area and see their graves. I would appreciate any assistance with this search. Good Morning Tyler Co. Rooters, OK, I told you would be the first to know!! The new COLLIER COUSINS page is up at......... http://members.aol.com/ALLCOLLIER/index.htm It has a link to the new COLLIER-L Discussion Mail List at RootsWeb. If you have ANY Collier connection, even if it just one marriage, I would like to add you to the researchers list. You don't have to join the Mail List to get your name added to researchers. Send me an Email with COLLIER RESEARCHER in the subject line. I would love to have your URL if you have a Homepage & full address & phone for my OFF-LINE database. Catch you later & keep up the good work, that's why this list was started and already we've brought together some people from across the US that might never have connected if it wasn't for list' like this and the Web. Thanks for your reply. Maybe we'll connect someday. Anita ------------------------------
Greetings from Raleigh NC: Claire, I read this below and wondered where you came up with the EADS name. I have a Andy M. EADS who had a son, John <underline>DAVIS EADS</underline>. I'm keeping my eye out for thinks like family names, since the kids are so obviously named for relatives on her side. I'm hoping that the William Eads DAVIS was named after someone upline, but I haven't been able to get past William DAVIS b. 1826 .... Also have no info on any siblings of William DAVIS. I've just recently come across the parents and siblings of Zaselda CRUNK and have found no EADS there (yet). Since William DAVIS was in TX (marriage records) in 1843, I'm not sure how the EADS in AL in 1900's would connect...if at all. Claire English ------------------------------

Hmmmm: I was just noticing: William DAVIS and Zaselda CRUNK named two of their children after *her* parents. Zaselda's father was *John Wesley* CRUNK and Zaselda's mother was *Louisa* MAYES/MAIZE. Wonder if the other two (Eliza and William Eads) were named after *his* side? Worth filing away in the back of the old brain... Ive included some of the descendants of William DAVIS below. The the dates of birth on the 2nd generation children are from a copy of the Davis Family Bible page (presume that of William and Frances) that appears to have been done about 1859 as the handwriting is similar through that date. The Bible page does not list Zaselda at all, but does list their four children and does mention two marriages: That of William DAVIS to Francis HEATHCOCK (sic) and that of "John W. DAVIS and Mary Elizabeth ANDING". So they're *mine* *mine* *mine* *mine* for sure! Does anyone have *any* connections? He had so *many* children and many stayed in Tyler Co. until death did they part. Is anyone researching the VAN KLECK family? I notice that he's from Lansingburg(h) NY - not too far from the probable origin of Stephen P. WILLSON. I wonder if there might have been some prior connection between the 2 of them. The VAN KLECK name sounds like something I've run across in researching WILLSON but can't find it now. Brenda ------------------------------
Last summer, I visited Chester and was lucky to find someone who could take me to the family plots of Dr. and Mrs. S.P. Willson, son and au.-in-law Hiram and Mary Amanda (STOW/EWING) and son-in-law and dau. Grant and Julia PAYNE, dau and son-in-law Danial R. and Lydia Almyra SMITH. The plots are north of Chester, deep in the woods, in the old Suphur Springs area. The grave of "Alphonso BAILEY, d. May 29, 1857, aged 27 years, 5 months, 4 days" is in the Payne plot. I don't know who this was and can't find him on the 1850 census. Anyone have a clue? He is under one of those large plates that covers the entire grave. Brenda ------------------------------
Does anyone have or know of a source of county maps for 1850-60? I don't want just boundry maps; I like to see something with roads, settlements on it. My family apparently lived at Peach Tree and owned the sanitorium at Sulphur Springs. That seems a little far to travel each day by buggy. They're buried near Sulphur Springs; maybe that's where they lived after their initial move to Peach Tree. I should probably look at deed records for the time period.
