Edgar, his brother, married a second time in 1928 to Julia Linton, he was 39 then and she was 20 so there were children born to them who were much younger. We never knew of any of his children, etc. My mom was only 5 or 6 years old last time she saw him. Would appreciate some information about your grandparents, their children if possible. I have lots of information to share. Have some papers from the Republic of Texas on Samuel Turner even.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VlB.2ACE/949.1 Message Board Post: Rickey, Hi, nice to meet you cousin! My grandfather was Edgar Turner, brother of Thomas. At least now I have a general idea of the time period in which Thomas left and went to Washington (or that is where it is said he went). I had been looking for him there much earlier. Story I have is that Dode was a deputy sheriff, got beat up and almost killed by some bad guys and then he shot and killed one or more of them and the sheriff told him to leave Tx. My mother said she remembers last seeing Dode when he briefly came to Tx for the funeral of his sister, Aunt Nan as they called her. Can't think of her name right now, would have to look it up. I know Dode's father was Samuel Houston Turner, married to Amanda Franklin. Samuel's parents were Samuel Turner and Emily Midkiff. Emily's parents were Isaac Midkiff and Susanna Howell. In 1843 some of the Howell and Midkiff family went on the Oregon Trail and settled in Oregon and Washington. I think possibly Dode went there to this part of his family. Emily Midkiff's sister was Candis Midkiff, married to Ellis Peter Bean and there is a lot of information online, etc about them. Anyway, any ideas on how to locate Dode????? Where exactly he went, etc.

Apparently, an earlier branch or wave came from Alabama in the 1860s, and another wave came in the 1870s. I don't know the exact year of when my branch came, but it was one of the Mississippi Thornton families. I don't know the name of my progenitor, but he was born in Mississippi and married to a Missouri (b. around 1842, also from Mississippi). Their son's name was William Auston "W. A." Thornton (Austin W.; Wm Austin.; Wm Austin.; Wm A.), whose eldest son was Otis Otto Thornton (Otto O.; Otto). I don't think my branch is descended from James Madison Thornton, though.

    3. I saw a post a few days ago on this general subject. I am trying to find some basic information on an Oma Ellis Chessher of Trinity who was married to my aunt, Bess Eleanor Shields. I think he was born about 1896-97 in Trinity County. He had at least one brother and I think a sister as well. I do know that they (Bess and Oma) lived in Beaumont for many years and then in the San Antonio area where Oma died on 2 May 1964. Bess Shields was the daughter of C J Shields, a long time resident of Trinity and former Mayor (1930-44) of Trinity. James Shields
