Floreda, This is all the Austin American had: MRS. IDA WALKER Mrs. Ida Walker, 59, died at a local hospital Thursday. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Jessie Ellis of Houston. The body is at the Cook Funeral home. This appeared on Friday, 19 Jan 1945, page 19, col 5. You might get some more information from the funeral home, now known as Cook-Walden. They have several establishments, but I think the main one is (512) 454-5611. Good luck. I did not realize how common a name Ida Walker was until I checked the death records of Texas. I have keyed in on one Ida Walker who may well be the one I am looking for. She died January 18, 1945 in Travis County. The Ida Walker I am looking for had been a Patient? Inmate? at Texas State Hospital for the Insane at Austin. Writing the state of Texas has been a practice in futility as for as finding out anything about this lady once she was committed to its care(March 22, 1944). She was born October 20, 1885 in Rapides Parish, La and married John Rodrigo there. They had a daughter born in 1925. The daughter is still alive but declines my efforts to find out anything about her mother. Incidentally, Ida Walker is my aunt - older sister to my mother. That makes the daughter my first cousin. Is there a possibility there is an obit for her? Would some Kind Soul check on this for me so that I can be sure the Ida Walker who died in 1945 is indeed my aunt before I send for her death certificate? Since I am not close kin (nieces don't qualify) I will have to send in a copy of my driver's license along with my $20.00 when requesting her death certificate. I would really appreciate any help or suggestions any of you have to offer. Floreda

I wrote the Dallas Library regarding their microfilm of the Texas Death Certificates. Following is the reply I received FYI. Floreda Visitors to the library may make copies of death certificates from the microfilm at 25 cents per page. We do not provide copies for e-mail, telephone, or regular mail since the Texas Vital Statistics offers the service for a fee of $9 (or $10 if the increase has gone into effect). A cheaper avenue would be to rent the microfilm through any branch library of the Family History Library system of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints. The rental fee is usually $3.25 or $3.50 at these centers. Most have copy services available for a modest fee of ten to twenty cents. If you cannot visit our library and wish to engage the service of someone to do so on your behalf, a list of searchers is on-line at www.dallasgenealogy.org which is the Dallas Genealogical Society's web page.
Thanks for the information, John. I will take your suggestion. Ida Walker, born 10/20/1885, Rapides Parish, La, married John RODIGO 7/25/1918 in Rapides parish. They were still in Rapides Parish in the 1920 census. A daughter was born to them in 1925 - by that time they had moved to Galveston, TX (later to Houston, TX). A divorce suit was filed between John and Ida in the year 1927 under cause number 141520 in Harris County, TX. However the case was dismissed. I cannot find Ida nor the daughter in the 1930 census. John Rodrigo is boarding and gives his marital status as divorced. On March 9, 1944 John RODRIGO signs an affadavit of Lunacy saying that he believes Ida WALKER is insane or mentally ill and should be committed to an institution. On April 7, 1944 she is committed to the State Hospital in Austin, TX. Because of privacy issues, (Ida WALKER RODRIGO is my mother's sister) I have been unable to get any information concerning her. I cannot find out if she was transferred to another state institution or if she spent her remaining days in Austin. She was committed as Ida WALKER. Therefore, I have tried to find her death date hoping to send for a death certificate. One kind researcher found several Ida WALKER deaths throughout the state of Texas. One that is of interest to me is Ida WALKER who died in Travis County January 18, 1945. Is there a listing somewhere that will give this Ida WALKER'S birthdate or place? I went to the Texas Vital Records website and I find that it now costs $20.00 for a death certificate. Before I send for it, I would like to verify this is the right Ida WALKER. Floreda
