> My grandparents and a first cousin are buried there. My father and his > brother (and his > wife) grew up in Terry Co. I was born there. What are their names? We have a fairly new Gomez book, and older Johnson Community book, and then the 1964 (or thereabout) issue of the Early Settlers of Terry County. The Gomez book is fairly new and quite full of oldtimers names. It includes many people who wound up in Brownfield after Brownfield became county seat. If you can give me some names, perhaps I can find information for you as I do the book research. Betty mailto:bhamilt@worldnet.att.net
Hello! It's good to hear from you both. I considered adopting the list, but my hands are full with the Terry County History Book and two elderly Mothers, ages 89+ and 91+. I don't think I can take on any more volunteer work even though I *am* online at least twice per day. James Robert or Robert James Strickland sounds familiar. I'll ask around. I went to school with a Robert Strickland in the 50s. He was a very nice looking young man who had a mischievous personality. Everyone liked him. I don't know about one born in 1915. He would be of my Mother's generation -- she was born in 1910. Yes, I know some Jowers here. One was county commissioner (I think) for a while. I don't think he is still. One of my former, very capable students is Bobbie Jowers. I've had other Jowers in school also, but Bobbie is the most recent. I just retired from a high school librarian's job in June of '98, so I haven't kept up too well since I left school. I'll post a copy of the form that we are circulating so both of you can see it. I will also look around and see what I can find about the Strickland name. There was a Jack Strickland here in the 50s. He and my now husband were friends. We were all in school together. I don't think Robert and Jack were related though. Jack was the grandson of the long-time newspaper owner here. Betty mailto:bhamilt@worldnet.att.net
I believe we are all on the same wavelength here. I've posted several times and still no help. Maybe now it will get up an running. I'm looking for anyone that knows about Percy Johnson,Charlie L. Johnson or Alma Johnson Walters. I am trying to locate my husbands family, which none of the kids knows anything about. Nancy Johnson PS--Husband and I both born and raised in Highlands and Baytown.
Hello Betty and David, I live in Baytown, Tx. and I just joined this list last week. I think I have seen one e-mail before ya'lls. I don't know if anybody knows of the list. I am very active on the Red River County list which has most of my husband's family. People are always contributing information and helping with lookups on it. Terry County has not been updated since Jan. 1998, and perhaps that is why there is little action on it. I guess Wanda Lovell is still the sponsor. I may look around locally and see what I can find here to help add some information to it and submit it. Well I feel stupid I think the county is up for adoption. If you look at the bottom of the e-mail, it says so. LOL No wonder there is not much action on it. My mother is Patsy Montgomery and my grandmother was Emily Jane Jowers McDaniels. My great grandfather was William Jonathon Jowers who homesteaded what is now North 5th street. Family descendants still live there. I lived there all through my childhood up until my sophomore year in high school. Try to make it back every 4 or 5 years for a visit. David, if you have a death date, maybe contact Kendrick Memorial Library and see if they will look up the obituary for you. Betty, maybe you can inspire some of the Terry County Historical Society into getting involved or maybe sponsoring the site. I know I would like to see it more active. I really enjoyed my childhood growing up there and there are a lot of great people there. Good luck in your searches and I think the Terry County History book sounds great. Hi, Betty. Thank you very much for your offer. What I would like to know the most is the death date of my cousin, Ricky Brigance, son of Nelson Lee and Barbara (Miller) Brigance. He is buried in the cemetery there. Henry Ferrell and wife Vivian Esther (Nelson) Brigance moved to the area in the 1930's. There were already some of my grandfather's (H.F.) brothers living there. My grandparents farmed there for many years and eventually moved into town on Cardinal street. My grandfather's second wife Hazel Lewis still lives in the house. She is in her 90's. My dad, Carroll Wayne (born 1928), and his brother, Nelson Lee (born 1932/3), went all the way through school in Brownfield. Nelson married Barbara Jean Miller who also grew up in Brownfield. My grandfather's youngest sister married Edgar Richardson and they also moved to Brownfield soon after my grandparents. She was known as "Tootsie" Richardson and worked in a pharmacy--I think..... They had 2 children, J.W. who moved to Lubbock and I guess is still there. The daughter is Bobbie Nell. She married Buzz Cooper. I don't know where he is from, but I think they raised their kids in Brownfield. They may still be there. I think Bobbie Nell worked in a bank for many years. Is this too much information? It is about all that I know. We moved after I was born, but did visit fairly often. I remember families with the last names of Hogue and Sexton. Thanks for keeping a lookout for any info pertaining to my research lines. - Carolyn

Looking for any info on Percy Johnson or Alice Rankin Johnson. Also is there any information anywhere on who fought in WW1 from Terry Co. Charlie L. Johnson (my father-in-law) was supposed to have joined the army with 4 or 5 other boys from brownfield.Trying to get info on this.
Hello, Terry. I would say it is not an active list as I've been subscribed for several months and have seen little correspondence. I have asked the same question twice and never received a reply from anyone. My grandparents and a first cousin are buried there. My father and his brother (and his wife) grew up in Terry Co. I was born there. I hope that I am wrong, but I haven't seen any replies to any questions. Sometimes, people don't want to answer questions because they would rather sell books giving that info. On the other hand, how do we know if we would like to buy the book if we don't know whether or not it pertains to our research line? So, I am still clueless about Terry Co. - Carolyn
