Hi folks! I have some questions about obituaries in the north Texas area. Allow me to ramble for a second. After waiting 2 1/2 weeks, my interlibrary loaned microfilm came in. It was for the November 1966 issues of the Ft Worth Star-Telegram newspaper. Anxiously I scanned the pages, only to be let down. My g-grandma's obituary wasn't listed! She died 11 Nov 1966 in Mansfield, Tarrant County, TX. I can't figure out why she wasn't listed, though. Did Mansfield have it's own newspaper back then? She died 6 AM on Friday the 11th. I checked that day's paper and the paper for Saturday the 12th. No obit. There was no paper on Sunday the 13th, and I checked the paper for Monday the 14th. Still no obit. How long of a delay could reasonably be expected between death and a posting in the paper? Should I try the remainder of the week? I didn't see any other notices that long delayed. I noticed the Star-Telegram at that time did not call them "Obituaries", they were called "Death Notices", and were listed at the begining of the classifieds. Now g-grandma had spent her last days in the Mansfield Nursing Home. Her death certificate says she lived in Mansfield for 11 years prior to her death. Before that she had lived in Milford, Ellis County, TX for 50 years. She was removed for burial down there in the Milford City Cemetery. Does anybody know what the name of the paper was in Ellis county back in 1966? Would the Texas State Library have back issues of those on microfilm too? Lots of questions, I know, but maybe somebody with long experience with the newspapers in that area can give me some advice.
