Texas did not name counties in honor of obscure surveyors. There were simply too man heroes, U.S. Presidents, colonists, bodies of water, and natural landscape structures to "fill the bill". Author: angelaharlan55 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.swisher/47.1.1.1.2.2.4/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I own a copy of THE SWISHER MEMOIRS by Col John M Swisher. The book only has 63 numbered pages so it is impossible to have a page #577 listing anyone. There are 3 un numbered pages that have 1) photo of Davy Crockett who stayed at the home of James Gibson Swisher. pg 19 referring to Crockett "During his stay at my father's it was a rare occurrence for any o us to get to bed before 12 or 1 o'clock we were so interested in hearing him talk." . . . 2) photo of James Gibson Swisher and 3) photo of John Milton Swisher's home These memoirs talk about the Alamo, Texas Independence and General Sam Houston who in a newspaper article I obtained states that Sam Houston stayed at the home of John Milton Swisher. Where anyone came up with the notion that one James Swisher of Ohio was the source of the naming of Swisher Co TX is nonsense. James Gibson Swisher born 06 Nov 1794 Knoxville, Tennessee Territory (he was born in TN prior to TN Statehood in 1796) served in the War 1812 in TN is well documented in the Austin Colony pre Texas as early as 1833, a signer of Texas Independence and recorded early on among all the founding father's of TX. The property where the state capital in Austin once belonged to the Swisher family. It is sad to think that some one was so desperate they fabricated pages in a book and tried to confuse anyone. Who the portrait might have been in Swisher Co could maybe have been one of James Gibson Swisher's sons or a different portrait of him or it could have been the James Gibson of Ohio and was given under the guise it was James Gibson Swisher. Unless someone in Swisher Co can tell that story it is hard to just guess. Hope this clears it up for you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: eGENEee Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.swisher/103/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Many people have been confused by the designation "Number exists***, **Death F" in the Father's Name Field in the Texas Birth Index. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services: This designation is actually **DEATH FILE NUMBER EXISTS***, and it means that the baby was deceased. At the time that the birth certificate was data entered, the only way to make the notation in the electronic record that the baby was deceased was to enter this in the father's name fields. The actual birth certificate will show the name of the father if that information was available, and the birth certificate will be stamped "DECEASED." This format is outdated, however, and no longer used. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hardly anyone escapes: Mormons, Indians, Mexicans, even every person in one whole State (I think it was Alabama). He thought they were wild. But I guess this prejudice was a product of the times. Other than that, and the sometimes tedious writing (I don't think it would have been bad writing if he'd had a professional editor, but I think he had no editor at all), it's really fairly decent writing considering his parents were probably not educated and he only had a sketchy education at that time. Later he did go to college I believe. Cheers! Susan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Sometimes it's a bit hard to believe all the things he said he did out west when he was young. His story is amazing! I've tried to decide if he exaggerated a little; maybe he was sort of a romantic dreamer. Still, the book really is interesting because it gives a glimpse of several places in the wild West and also in Mexico of the times and happenings. James goes all out in this book and even writes of his crush on a popular, rather racy show girl(I wish I could think of her name), gets in Indian wars and so much more. Whether Swisher county was actually named for him, I'll probably never know. It just seemed mysterious that there was a portrait of a James Swisher "imposter" hanging in the courthouse that was taken down in the 1930s and replaced with the more famous James Swisher picture. Thanks for writing! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It's the new Swisher County Page for the USGenWeb project. I've taken it back over and I'm still moving everything.
