[?]ley's lately. [?]ss is holding out very well, [?] stockwater is getting scarce. [?] creek has failed considerably __y. [Ou]r school will open the first of [the] month. [?] Bob Owens and Mrs. Park[?] are keeping "batch" on the [cree]k. __ Y. Parham and family made [a trad]ing trip to Lampasas last __, and I guess bought lots of ____ry." __. L. Deriston is pasturing a ___ [o]f cattle from Williamson. ___town Dr. kicked because this ___e complained of other peoples ____es eating up our grass. A. ___zil, had the misfortune to fall ____y feet last week. He hung to [a] limb which broke and as the [limb?] struck the ground first a part [of t]he force was checked, but he [fell?] flat on his back, across two ___cks. Dr. Doss was called to [tend?]him. He is badly injured but [not] fatally. The farmers are busily engaged in [sow]ing wheat. __. L. Hicks has opened the ___pel school. The attendance is ___d. The recent rains have put the [farm]ers far behind with their ____. We were up in the Colony a few [day]s ago and saw several bales of [cott]on not picked and plenty of ____ not gathered. Pecans are____ ____ gathered. [remainder of column cut off] -- China. The recent rains have put good seasons in the ground and the farmers are preparing to sow a large acreage in wheat. The low price of cotton and having a good local market for wheat are causing our farmers to diversify their crops. Mr. Mitchell and Tom Harkey passed through the other day en route to Goldthwaite with 180 head of fat hogs. Montie Brown is still very low. A boy at H. H. Lindsey's and if you see Assessor Lindsey wearing an unusually broad smile you may know that the grandson is responsible for it. There is also a brand new girl at Josh McCarty's. Some of the boys have been busy deer-hunting lately. We suppose it is all for pleasure as they don't seem to get much profit out of it, though some have killed a few. Geo. Roberts and Lee Smith caught three wildcats Saturday and one on Tuesday before. The boys say they are just training their pups now. The China school began Monday morning. The attendance was small owing to the recent rains which have hindered cotton picking. A great many children will not start for some time as there is still considerable cotton to pick.
