[first few lines illegible/faded] There is a very good season in the ground, but we need a good rain on small grain to settle the ground. Oats look very well. Wheat is not so encouraging, though is doing some better the last few days. Jeff McCarty planted 8 or 10 acres of corn last week. Several are talking of planting some this week. Grass is beginning to look green and the heal [beal?] flies are making the old heifers get a move on them. J. R. Cunningham sold, last week, to Capt. McDonald and Forest Edwards 22 two year old steers at $20. Young Pierce and family went Saturday to his stepfather's S. Oneal's, in Lampasas county. We regret to learn that Mrs. Oneal who last spring had a cancer removed by physicians in Killeen has had to undergo another operation and at present is in very bad health. With the candidates, wolves and jack rabbits the farmers will have a tough time this spring. It is pretty well understood that another Chinaman will enter the race for tax assessor, and rumor says we may furnish some candidates for precinct officers. China was some official pie and is not ashamed to ask for it. There is a candidate coming now and I will have to close. Mellica Man. [end of photocopy]
