I made the copies of these various articles because somewhere on the page was a mention of my own ancestors/relations. Please do not send me queries to ask if I have more. I will post everything that I have on this message board. The San Saba News is on microfilm at the San Saba library. All is quoted as written, spelling, run-on sentences and all! >From the San Saba News October 30, 1891 China Chips. It is distressingly dry over in China. The tanks are nearly all dry and the wells are getting low; very little stock water between the rivers. Really it seems that a water famine is upon us. C.G. Baker is finishing his new residence. E. S. Brown the boss carpenter of China is bossing the job. Our school is getting along nicely and new pupils are being enrolled each week. A bran [sic] new girl baby at Josh McCarty's. Josh don't seem to be proud, because he has so many girls. Quite a sensation occured on our creek, caused by Gorden Roberds parting company with his mustache. The first person he met exclaimed, O! go and pull a potato sack over your head. The next boy said, say Mister your upper lip is bald headed; then a stranger asked who was this starting a dime museum on China. Then Doctor George came along and told him to go and stand in frong of his drug store and make people sick. The little Sunday school girl said, poor man, I'll give him my nickel. Gordon, you had better wear them long after this. Now, Mr. Editor, a word to the correspondents to the News. I feel as much interested in the welfare of our county paper as if I owned an interest in it, and a county and its town and people are largely judged by their county paper, and there is nothing in a paper that interests its readers more than good, newsy letters from different points in the county. It seems that no one will write from China but me, and my pieces are always as good as any one would expect of me, so I have no apologies to make for them; so don't think that your pieces won't interest any one, but write something every alternate week anyhow. - A Chinaman. Richland Springs. Ed. News. -- It still continues dry and hot with but little prospects of rain. There is some sickness in and around town, Mr. R. V. Reed is sick with slow fever, also Mr. K. Devenport; he came home last Friday and is very sick with slow fever. Mr. F. Johnson has been very sick but is convalescent now. Mr. C. C. Bibbs has been very sick for some two months with dropsy is thought to be some better now, he seemed to take a change for the better last Friday. Mr. W. J. Crouch commenced work on his dwelling last Monday. He will move his family here in some ten or fifteen days. We are glad to have you settle in our town Billy. Mr. A.M. Hall has the lumber on the ground to build in town. He comes to get the benefit of the school here; you are welcome among us Mid. The school moved to the new school house last Thursday. The New house was dedicated Wednesday night, October 21st, 1881 [sic], Dr. J. D. Robinett of Brownwood making the speech. There was quite a crowd out to hear him; his subject was education and he handled his subject well and it was highly appreciated by all that heard him. We heard nothing but praise of the Dr. and his speech he made. It was gratifying to hear him talk. There was quite a sum made up at the meeting for the purpose of painting the house, and the students are helping to make up the money to paint the house. Judge A. B. Hayworth of San Saba has the contract to paint the house. We have a house that we are very proud of; it is an ornament to our town. The school roll numbers about one hundred and new students nearly every day. Our teachers, Prof. B. Reagan and sister Miss Annie, are giving general satisfaction, are well liked by the patrons and are receiving their cooperation in the school and they are loved.
