    3. Thanks Lisa, for the excerpt about the "San Saba Mob" This would have been about a year after my gr-grandfather, Will James was shot by the mob. It was interesting to read how it was afterward. I have always read that everyone was so afraid they wouldn't speak of it. This newspaper item shows that that was not entirely true. Margaret

Jim Baker and wife, of Coryelle [sic] county, were visiting relatives here last week. Mr. Neal Foster and wife from near Milburn have been visiting the family of S. C. McCarley. Grandma Haney, Mrs. MrCarley's mother, returned home with them. Will Page and wife, of Hamilton county, are visiting relatives here and will perhaps remain some time. We acknowledge the receipt of the announcement of the Editor's marriage, and extend congratulations, hoping their life may be one of peace and prosperity, and when the last editorial has been written that they may spend eternity where only joy is known. We learn that there are still efforts being made to have the rangers removed. We are not surprised at this, neither can we blame them, for if we belonged to such a thing we would not want such men as Capt. McDonald and his boys on our track. We have no uneasiness about their removal until their work is done. Hoping that their work may be crowned with success and the power of this diabolical organization be forever broken we shall expectantly await developments. All is quoted as written, spelling, run-on sentences and all! >From the San Saba News October 1, 1897 [from an unknown community "report"] After Rev. M. S. Gardner had finished the services at the Methodist Church Sunday night, a little boy handed him a note, informing him that a couple would present themselves in a few minutes to be married. After closing the excercises, the congregation remained greatly puzzled to know whom to expect. Directly a buggy drove up and the minister was requested to perform the ceremony while they were in the buggy. The congregation gathered about the buggy and heard the ceremony that made Edgar Neal, one of the rangers stationed here, and Miss Maude Montgomery, daughter of Mr. Cal. Montgomery, husband and wife. -- Little Ruth, daughter of Billy Crawford, was lost for several hours Sunday. She had gone with her mother to spend the day with Mrs. W. J. Wilson, one mile out on the Blufton road. Her father went on out to Mr. Dismukes about two miles further on, and after he had started, she, unnoticed by her mother, started after him. She got out of the road and wandered about 4 miles and was found in the old Llano road beyond the top of the hill in Mart Dickson's pasture. She was toddling on, unscared, when found, and said she was going to Mr. Dismuke's. A little dog was with her all the way, and its tracks were of great assistance in the search for the child. -- Santa Fe Route. The Gulf, Colorado and Sante Fe is the best and quickest route to all points in the Southeast, North and East, the direct Line to Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and California. -- China. There have been three or four families here from Burnet county picking cotton the past two weeks. With a few exceptions the hope of the top crop is a thing of the past. We think the Commissioners' court could very profitably expend a few dollars in grading at the big live oak in the Bigg's lane. During the late rains the road at that point was almost impassable for loaded wagons. Some one should present the matter before the court. All is quoted as written, spelling, run-on sentences and all! >From the San Saba News October 30, 1891 China Chips. It is distressingly dry over in China. The tanks are nearly all dry and the wells are getting low; very little stock water between the rivers. Really it seems that a water famine is upon us. C.G. Baker is finishing his new residence. E. S. Brown the boss carpenter of China is bossing the job. Our school is getting along nicely and new pupils are being enrolled each week. A bran [sic] new girl baby at Josh McCarty's. Josh don't seem to be proud, because he has so many girls. Quite a sensation occured on our creek, caused by Gorden Roberds parting company with his mustache. The first person he met exclaimed, O! go and pull a potato sack over your head. The next boy said, say Mister your upper lip is bald headed; then a stranger asked who was this starting a dime museum on China. Then Doctor George came along and told him to go and stand in frong of his drug store and make people sick. The little Sunday school girl said, poor man, I'll give him my nickel. Gordon, you had better wear them long after this. Now, Mr. Editor, a word to the correspondents to the News. I feel as much interested in the welfare of our county paper as if I owned an interest in it, and a county and its town and people are largely judged by their county paper, and there is nothing in a paper that interests its readers more than good, newsy letters from different points in the county. It seems that no one will write from China but me, and my pieces are always as good as any one would expect of me, so I have no apologies to make for them; so don't think that your pieces won't interest any one, but write something every alternate week anyhow. - A Chinaman. Richland Springs. Ed. News. -- It still continues dry and hot with but little prospects of rain. There is some sickness in and around town, Mr. R. V. Reed is sick with slow fever, also Mr. K. Devenport; he came home last Friday and is very sick with slow fever. Mr. F. Johnson has been very sick but is convalescent now. Mr. C. C. Bibbs has been very sick for some two months with dropsy is thought to be some better now, he seemed to take a change for the better last Friday. Mr. W. J. Crouch commenced work on his dwelling last Monday. He will move his family here in some ten or fifteen days. We are glad to have you settle in our town Billy. Mr. A.M. Hall has the lumber on the ground to build in town. He comes to get the benefit of the school here; you are welcome among us Mid. The school moved to the new school house last Thursday. The New house was dedicated Wednesday night, October 21st, 1881 [sic], Dr. J. D. Robinett of Brownwood making the speech. There was quite a crowd out to hear him; his subject was education and he handled his subject well and it was highly appreciated by all that heard him. We heard nothing but praise of the Dr. and his speech he made. It was gratifying to hear him talk. There was quite a sum made up at the meeting for the purpose of painting the house, and the students are helping to make up the money to paint the house. Judge A. B. Hayworth of San Saba has the contract to paint the house. We have a house that we are very proud of; it is an ornament to our town. The school roll numbers about one hundred and new students nearly every day. Our teachers, Prof. B. Reagan and sister Miss Annie, are giving general satisfaction, are well liked by the patrons and are receiving their cooperation in the school and they are loved. Jacoby 15 acres 1900 Tax List: In 1900, there is no listing for A. K. Bailey, nor is he on the 1900 Census, so I am told. In 1901, A. K. Bailey same land 5 hoses & mules - $125 6 cattle - $60 6 hogs - $15 1 dog - $1 1 carriage/wagon/buggy - $100 tools - $40 misc - $20 total taxes $11.64 "B. W. Bailey" or (B.V. Bailey)is listed right next to A.K., and owns an illegible number of town lots in Block 4 of Harkey(ville); the lots are valued at $800. In 1902, no Baileys listed In 1903, an "M. B. Bailey" and "Mrs. B. W. Bailey" - who now owns the Harkey(ville) town lots. I have gotten a lot of help on this from listers. Who is B.W. Bailey? Did he die in the period between 1901 and 1903. Did Mrs. B.W. Bailey survive until the 1910 Census? Was there a will for B.W. Bailey? Many thanks for reading and any assistance. Tom

She might have lived long enough to qualify for Social Security in which case she would have needed proof of birth. Possibly the midwife was able to verify her date of birth and she went before the County to get her birth registered near the time she turned 65. Possibly also, the probated birth certificate may have more information for you... Just a suggestion. Tom
