Does anyone have information on Thomas MONK? He was born about 1848, and is found in the 1880 San Saba County Census living as a 'boarder-laborer' in the household of Asa R. and Mary S. BROWN. His birthplace is listed as North Carolina. I would be interested in knowing who he was, and why he was living with my family at that time - 1880. Thirteen years later, when Mary (Kirkpatrick) Brown is a widow, she marries this Thomas Monk. Thanks, Karen Gauny Crisalli
Hi to "The San Saba List": Does anyone know the exact location within San Saba County for each of the census "precincts"? For example, the 1880 census lists some of my ancestors as being in "precinct #9" when they were counted by the Census-Taker. Knowing what I already know about their land holdings I would guess that Precinct #9 was the "China Creek" community. But, I have MANY ancestors in various census' and I'll like to identify all the locations. Is there a map that shows the precincts? Or a descriptive list? Thanks! A while back, one of our list members expressed frustration in tracking down living relatives. It occurs to me that some of you might not know of the 'online' telephone books that are available and FREE to search. Now - this is ONLY handy of you happen to be searching an uncommon name, 'cause you know if you check the phone books for "Jones", or "Sutton", etc. you're just not going to have any luck. However, the lady that was asking was looking for McEACHERN, so I will use this as an example. One of the SEVERAL online phone book sites is one called "www.411.com" (as in "411 - information"). When you go to that website, you can click on the button for "White Pages", then fill in as little or as much information as you want. I typed in JUST the last name McEACHERN, and JUST checked for the State of Texas, and found TEN listings. You can get more specific, and check a name just for one particular city, or for the entire United States. Try it, if you are looking for a less-than-common surname. Regards, Karen GAUNY Crisalli
Connie, thanks to your link I was able to find a great uncle's Missouri unit, the 2nd Missouri Cavalry, CSA. The NPS Soldiers and Sailors System URL does not as yet have Missouri posted. Thought you'd like to know that your post already has been useful. Tom

Dear Don, I saw your query on the San Saba list, and think I MIGHT have found your great grandmother Alva(h) BROWN In the 1880 San Saba Census there is a five year old girl listed, named Alva Brown. I can't be certain this is yours, because she is listed as five years old (making her birth date about 1875) and you said she was born in 1873, but the dates and names are close, and one always has to allow for mistakes! IF it turns out that they are one and the same, here are the details: BROWN, A. Joseph, 26, farmer. Born TX. Both parents born ALA Lou, 24, wife; Born TX. Both parents listed as born ALA Alva, age 5, daughter. Born TX Elgin, 4, daughter, born TX O. Dane, age 1, son. Also born TX ---------- I also have an INDEX of marriages, and found the following listing: CARTER, W. T., to BROWN, Alvah - April 18, 1894. I hope this ends up being a good lead for you. We have a Brown family who moved from Johnson County, Mo to San Saba County in the 1870's with a large family, and had more children in Texas. One of these is listed as V. A. Brown. My records indicate this person was born in San Saba Co., Aug 6, 1880. I have no indication whether this person was a boy or girl, and don't have his/her names either. My ancestor would have been a brother, and his name was Samuel Thomas Jefferson Brown. He married Lavenia Ann Robinson, dau of Vollie Ann Warren Robinson McMillin. Any indication of a tie?
Would anyone happen to have an Edna Amy Brown in their files? (She was my great grandmother) She was born in Hasse, Comanche Co., Texas on July 26, 1901 and died in Benbrook, Tarrant Co., Texas on October 23, 1995. Burial: John Hurst Cemetery in Mills Co., Texas. She married Arthur Columbus Kincheloe, Sr. in Lakeview, San Saba Co., Texas on December 23, 1920. They had eight children together and four of them were born in San Saba Co., Texas. Edna & Arthur lived in Star, Mills Co., Texas the last time that I saw them.. My parents divorced when I was very young so I rarely ever got to see my ggrandparents and I know absolutely nothing of Edna's side of the family. I'm searching for her parents and siblings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Nicole Wiebe nwiebe@dashlink.com http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=nwiebe30
