Karen, I have an unusual request but thought you might be able to help. I have been trying to locate the coordinates for the San Saba City Cemetery or at the very least, the actual address. This cemetery is not listed in the GNIS. My husband has many relatives buried in this cemetery and I was trying to add them to the FIND A GRAVE location (www.findagrave.com). BUT, this cemetery is not listed and you must have a location in order to list it. It's been several years since we made the trip to the cemetery and all we can remember is it being north of town on Highway 16. Thanks! By the way, I think you do a great job assisting people. Keep up the good work. Paula Sellman Melbourne Beach, FL dpsmel@yahoo.com --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! Dear Jane and 'the list' - As far as the name GARY is concerned, there is only one GARY listed in the cemetery inscription book: Nellie Opal GARY, born 7-19-1907, died 7-23-1907 (4 days old). Sorry this is the only one I find. Karen Gauny Crisalli
Just checked my master list and we have the following GARY burials in McCulloch County: John Leonard, Maggie May Coots, and W.T. Are any of these the people you are hunting? Karen, Sorry to add to the list of lookups, but could you look for any GARY ancestors that might be there! Thanks, Jane Gary
I am very sorry to say that there are no more of these books available. Lynn Blankenship
Hi again to 'the list': A lot of people have asked me if the book I have - "San Saba County Texas Cemetery Inscriptions", compiled by Joyce Capps 1992 - is still available. I often quote look-ups from this reference book and others have expressed an interest in buying it. The answer is 'I don't know if it's still available'! I live in South Carolina and bought it a couple of years ago through the mail. Several people on this "list" are IN San Saba, so I am asking publicly: "Does anyone know if the Cemetery Inscription book is still available, and if so, could you please post a note here on the list as to how much and from where it could be ordered?". Sometimes I find San Saba publications on one or the other of my two favorite "book search" websites. This is NOT an endorsement - just a helpful suggestion: if you are looking for used books on ANY subject - including San Saba titles, try going to either www.bibliofind.com or www.alibris.com. Booksellers pay a fee to list their books on these two sites (there may be others) and then we -the public- can search for them free of charge. I have sometimes found The Call of the San Saba, and even the San Saba County History (volume I) this way, and once even found a census book there. Hope this helps someone! Regards, Karen Gauny Crisalli
Dear Kelley, and 'the list', Further to your request for a cemetery record look-up, I did not find any Stubblefields at all in the San Saba County Cemetery index. For BARNETT, I found three listings: Buried in the RICHLAND SPRINGS CEMETERY: Sidney Jane Barnett, born 11-16-1823, died 4-12-1890 Alexander Barnett, born 9-9-1816, died 1-16-1886 Jim Barnett, no dates given at all You didn't give me any 'first names' for BARNETT, so I don't know if these will be of help to you or not. Good Luck! Karen Gauny Crisalli > >
Dear Karen and 'the list', Thank you so much for your help on trying to locate the graves of John Barnett and his wife Zilphia....we will just have to keep searching. We also appreciate the tips for locating other San Saba related books. I don't recognize any of the Barnett names you mentioned who are buried at Richland Springs, but feel they have to be related to my Barnetts of the same location. If anyone has info. please contact me. June Hamrick Schaub archer@qwest.net Note: Kelley Tolbert.....please contact me regarding the Barnett Family!! The Hamrick Cemetery is shown on a map in the San Saba Co. History Book 1856-1983.....but we didn't find it by that, we didn't have the book at the time. Luckily my husband had a GPS locator and some vague directions.......we found an old farmhouse on private property and asked if we could go thru the locked gates and look for the old Hamrick cemetery......they let us climb "over and under" the fence and go onto the property, "thinking we were really looking for arrowheads".....we found out later! But we did find a few graves ....and they were the ones I really needed to prove my lineage......so I was beyond thrilled! It was as if we were "led to them" and it was quite a day!.....Unfortunately the photos are not that good, but at least we did find them before they were totally unreadible & deteriorated. There was a very nice grave with ornate fencing around it like a crib...with a large granite tombstone. It was the grave of a young man who we know nothing about...........named J.R. BECKMAN, but we are hoping to find his family someday. Here are the notes on what we found at that cemetery in Oct. 1999, and the location, etc. The Hamrick Cemetery in San Saba, TX. GPS location for the Hamrick cemetery is N.31,12,15 and W. 98,40,15. We Found 18 to 22 graves, but the majority were unreadible markers or just rocks .....so that we will never know who they belong to. Under a live oak tree we found the main one we needed to see - June's GG Grandfather, who was only known as "Coonie Hamrick" in her family for his racoon hunting skills! His given name was: > Joseph W. Hamrick > son of > B.L & E.T. Hamrick (E.T. was Elizabeth Torinda "Rinda" Barnett daug. of John and Zilphia Barnett) > Born Nov. 29, 1860 > Died Nov 3, 1885 > The grave has the inscription of a hand , with the fingers > closed except for the first finger, which is pointing toward > Heaven. There is an inscription at the bottom: "Dear Father > with a reverent hand ..... s thy memory g.... while one by > one .... Household Band Reunited in Heaven." > > Right next to this grave (North, toward the San Saba River) is June Hamrick Schaub's > Great Great Great Grandfather : > The marker has fallen over on the stones that cover the > grave, and broken into little pieces. However, like a puzzle > whose pieces are only slightly seperated, we could make out > the following: > > Burrell L. Hamrick ( At the top of this marker are two > hands, clasped in a handshake.) > Died Dec 9, 1865 > Age - 45 years > At the bottom is the inscription : "A precious one from us > is gone. A voice we loved is stilled. A place is vacant in > our home. Which never can be filled." > > On the South side of Joseph W. "Coonie" Hamrick's grave we found two > more graves of his younger sisters. All of these graves being in line with each other. > > Between these two is another broken marker reading: > Frances Amanda > Born Dec 10, 1858 > Died Dec 17, 1865 > > Ellen Ellisa > Born Oct 6, 1861 > Died Dec 10, 1863 > > At the bottom the inscription : "Daughters of B.L. and E.T. > Hamrick, Gone but not forgotton." > > Nearby are two other graves with markers - under a rather large bush. We had to > crawl in under the brush to read them..... > Hugh E. > son of > T.H. & M.E. > Goodloe > Jan 29, 1885 - Aug 9, 1901 > > and > > Elva Mae Crawford > dau. of C.T. & P.B. Crawford > > with the inscription : "A little flower of love that > blossomed but it died" > Born July 16, 1900 > Died Aug 9, 1901 We have since found that these were the children of other Hamrick relatives. > > The grave that we first found that is contained in the small > ornate fence is: > J.R. Beckman > Born Mar 19, 1869 > Died Dec 4, 1903 > This is the most recent of the graves found here. Most of the Hamrick grave markers in San Saba showed "A hand pointing toward the Heavens....or clasped hands, and inscription Gone But Not Forgotten". So, hoping to make some more connections and to encourage others not to give up searching for the graves of their ancestors. Sincerely, John & June(Hamrick) Schaub Chandler, AZ archer@qwest.net
Dear Donna and the list, Sorry, but I find no John WEBSTER burial listed in the San Saba County Cemetery Index. Sorry! Karen Gauny Crisalli
Dear Debra (and 'the list'), You asked if there was a cemetery listing for a James David Crockett. I'm in South Carolina, not Texas, but I have a book that lists MOST of the burials through the 1970's and I did find a CROCKETT family that might be the one you are looking for: Buried in the San Saba Cemetery, on Highway 16 just north of town: J. D. Crockett, born February 13, 1862, died December 25, 1906 (Christmas Day!) right next to J. D. is Mary Jane CROCKETT, born December 13, 1862, died June 20, 1957 nearby is a W. R. CROCKETT, born 1889, died 1954 Hope this turns out to be the one you are looking for! Karen Gauny Crisalli
Hi Karen, Sorry, I have to jump on the "me too" wagon. Would you please check your book to see if there is a John Webster there. He was born in 1857 and supposedly died sometime before 1910. Hello, is anyone willing to see if thee is a James David crockett buried in a emetary in San Saba. I need the dates of the tombstone. Please it is important and I have been stuck for a year and this might be one of my breakthroughs. Debra
I have a copy of a booklet on Richland Springs. It was first printed in 1912. Mine is a reprint done in 1973. It is full of photos of Richland Springs in 1912. There are photos of a First Baptist and a First Christian Church. There may have been other, this is just what is in the booklet. ^..^
Hello San Saba Mailing list; First of all, I have just subscribed to your mailing list just today. I am researching the family of John T. ROHN (b. approx 1868 in Florida) and Minnie Mae TULLOS (b. approx 1886). They lived in Richland Springs, San Saba, Texas in 1920 and had at least 5 children, the oldest being born approx. 1907 in Texas. I am currently trying to find churches in the Richland Springs area that were around during the 1907-1924 time period. I'm hoping to find some christening records of the children and maybe a marriage record for John and Minnie Mae Rohn. I do not know what denomination they followed. Thank you for any help you may have. Patricia Hand Madison, WI phand@tds.net
I am looking for information on Martha Tensley Ketchum born 10/25/1866. Her son always claimed she was related To Black Jack Ketchum But I cannot find proof. I"m hoping someone might have her name in their Krtchum data bases. I would appreciate any help I could get! kristy kristy@mbo.net
Someone on the list (unsigned inquiry) recently asked about a Hallet K. Ballard and wife Rosa. I took the liberty of looking at my 1900 San Saba census and found them listed with the following children (in 1900): H. K. BALLARD, born 3-1870 Rosa, wife, born 4-1877 Pal BALLARD, son, born in TX 8-1895 Cecil BALLARD, son, born in TX 1-1897 Jimlin BALLARD, son, born in TX 6-1899. Also living with the Ballard family at this time is an Ellmer CREECH and Charlie WILLIAMS, listed as "boarders". In also checking the Marriage Index book that I have, it appears that H. K. Ballard and Rosie Speegle married on 10-18-1894. When I checked the index for burials in San Saba cemeteries, I found only Cecil - whos middle name apparently was Cecil Bryan Ballard, born 1-14-1897 and died 4-22-1904 - at age 7. There is also an Arthur Hill Ballard - born 2-8-1912 and died 9-11-1912 (7 months old) who is buried next to Cecil so I am assuming he is related....... Hope this adds some new information for somebody! Regards, Karen Gauny Crisalli
I'm am looking for any info on my great, great grandfather. His name is: Hallett K. (Kit) Ballard, born Mar 1870 in San Saba. His wife is Rosa Speegle. I would like to know about his children also. Thank you for your help.
Looking for information about a (Mrs.) Armour White who would have witnessed a birth certificate in about 1942 for Benjamin Nicholas Bartlett. Benjamin was actually born in late 1880's but, he needed a certified birth certificate for some reason. The later-issued certificate also was witnessed by his sister - Judith Bartlett Stallings.
