Posted on: San Saba Co., TX Queries
with Automated Mailing List Posting Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/SanSaba/659 Surname: WARREN, ROBINSON, MCMILLIN, BROWN ------------------------- June, I will be most appreciative if you would please look up some families related by marriage. The central figure is my gggrandmother, Vollie Ann Warren Robinson McMillin, b. Dec 9, 1841 in Hardeman Co., Tn, and died July 16, 1915 in McMillin Community, San Saba Co., Tx. She married Jerry K. Robinson in about 1859 who died in the Civil War. Later, she married N. D. McMillin July 26, 1864, a neighbor to her parents, Jefferson and Elizabeth Owen Warren. Her first daughter, LaVenia Ann Robinson married S.T.J. Brown (son of Samuel Brown) in Nov 5 1883. It is possible the Samuel and Francis Ellen Wasson Brown family moved from Jefferson Co., Mo after 1880. Any information you may find about these families and their neighbors will be appreciated. Bill
Perhaps the name "KNEER" is German. In German, the 'k' and the 'n' would be both be pronounced. It would end up sounding like one would expect to pronounce "KANIER." I don't know the family or anything about them. I just studied German... so I read/pronounce the two versions the same way... Good luck
Posted on: San Saba Co., TX Queries
with Automated Mailing List Posting Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/SanSaba/658 Surname: JAMES ------------------------- Thanks Lisa, I am interested in the Mob and have heard many different accounts. You mentioned books I have not read. My gr-grandfather, Will James was shot in 1896 by members of the Mob. His daughter, my grandmother always said his killing was because of the conflict between cattlemen and homesteaders. Could there be truth in this? She was only 12 when he was killed. Will James had 160 Acres of bought and paid for land. Would he be considered a homesteader? His wife, my gr-grandmother sold his land for a fraction of its value after his death, but I don't know to whom. I plan to get the books you mentioned, that I have not already read. I appreciate your post. It is the first time I have read information about anyone who actually was part of the "Mob". Margaret
Posted on: San Saba Co., TX Queries
with Automated Mailing List Posting Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/SanSaba/656 Surname: ------------------------- If you're interested in the mob, I can suggest a few books: "I'll Die Before I'll Run" by C. L. Sonichsen (Chapter called 'The Pious Assassins') In my opinion, this is the best account of the Mob's activities. Mr. Sonichsen interviewed a number of the people who had a role in the business, and who knew those involved. Another account is given in the book, "Captain Bill McDonald: Texas Ranger," by Albert Bigelow Paine (Chapter 24, 'The Buzzard's Water Hole Gang') This book is somewhat sensationalistic, but interesting nonetheless. There is also a mention of the Mob in "Triggernometry," by Eugene Cunningham, starting on page 325. But it's brief. All three books are old, but have been reprinted within the last few years, so if they're not on the shelves, you can definitely have your local book store order them for you. To answer your questions: The Mob began as a sort of posse that convened as necessary to run rough men out of town or to dispense "justice" to cattle thieves, since there were few lawmen available, and the criminal element took advantage of the situation. At some point in the mid- to late 1880s, things got completely out of hand. The men began killing people against whom they had a grudge, and some say people were killed so that their land could be bought up by members of the mob. Many who were not killed were run out of town through scare tactics. The identity of members was kept secret, and people who "talked" were killed. People who were not in the Mob were killed for openly discussing the behavior of the Mob, or for stating whom they believed to be members. By 1897, the whole problem was so bad that citizens began writing to the Governor, begging him to send the Rangers. He did. By 1899, several members had been put on trial and the District Attorney ran the rest out of San Saba County. (He said he would close the open cases if the members moved on to other areas and kept their dealings honest.) To my knowledge, my GG Grandfather was the only member of the Mob that was convicted of murder. (My GG Grandfather is recorded in one of the above books as having been the "mastermind" of the group. I doubt that, but he was definitely deeply involved.) He never had any property or land to speak of, so what he "gained" by participating, I cannot guess. He spent 10 years in prison before he was pardoned by the Governor, largely through the efforts of the District Attorney who convicted him. There were other trials, but several ended in mis-trial, and I think the DA eventually gave up by 1903 or so. In the 1960s, my great aunt went to San Saba and tried to look at the court records relative to her Grandfather's conviction. She was followed to the county line by the Sherriff -- literally. I doubt many would be so touchy now, but even then, people recalled what had happened, and people didn't "talk" about it.
Posted on: San Saba Co., TX Queries
with Automated Mailing List Posting Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/SanSaba/654 Surname: ------------------------- So whose families were in "The Mob"? Who knows the history behind this vigilante group? What was their purpose? Did they run off "outsiders"? Was this a Klan type orginization? Were they stringing up their ties on Sunday and "outsiders" or sheepherders on Monday? What was the average age? How many Texas Rangers did it take to close 'em down? Do they still exist. Were they the real "law and order"? I remember driving to Richland from Dallas one year when I was around 20. I stopped in San Saba to ask some teenagers standing on a corner directions. One of them said "You better keep on moving." I did not think much of it then. What does anyone know about this interesting part of San Saba County history? By the way: sorry about so many POSTS; I don't want to be of-FENCE-ive. A little Taylor humor there---
Jim: Strange things happen to tombstones! A year ago last November, I was in San Saba and found that my mother's tombstone was gone and assumed that someone had stolen it. I went to the funeral home there and ordered another one and when they went to set it, they found the first one about 6" below the surface and covered with grass. THEY ACTUALLY SINK! He told me also, that the other ones in the family will likely do the same thing eventually. These days they use a different method for setting the stones and they hold up better. Good luck!...................Barbara (Ballard) Leedahl TXSSABA-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > Subject: > > TXSSABA-D Digest Volume 01 : Issue 13 > > Today's Topics: > #1 [TXSSABA] Taylor's and Ellis' ["James K. He was my great great grandfather. I could not find the tombstone this last Saturday (Feb. 3) when we buired my dad, Ellis Kneer Taylor. I made some inquires here and someone wrote and said her ancestor was James Kanier Taylor and he married a Norman, just like mine. They have to be one in the same. Could that middle name have been spelled incorectly along the way? And what happened to that tombstone.
