EAST TEXAS GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY “Mining Obituaries for Ancestors” or reading obituaries will be the topic of Sandra Crowley, speaker, at the East Texas Genealogical Society meeting on August 11, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. All meetings are free and open to the public. The meeting will be held at Tyler Public Library, in Taylor Auditorium, 201 S. College, Tyler, TX 75702. Reading obituaries can provide a great deal of information about your ancestors and even about the community. Learn how you can find the hidden genealogical gems in published and online obituaries then use that information to develop a research plan. Identify some of the best places to locate obituaries. Sandra Crowley is a genealogist, author, and lecturer who grew up attending family reunions and developed a natural curiosity about her family history. She speaks at local, regional and national events, including RootsTech and FGS. Currently, she serves as Director of Development for Texas State Genealogical Society (TxSGS), co-editor of Stirpes, the Journal of the TxSGS; producer & editor for the North Carolina Genealogical Society’s Webinar Series; and seminar coordinator for the Mid-Cities Genealogical Society (MCGS). She previously served as President, Vice President of Education, Executive Vice President, Immediate Past President, and FGS Delegate for the Dallas Genealogical Society; President of MCGS; editor of the DGS Newsletter and managing editor of DGS’s Pegasus: The Journal of the Dallas Genealogical Society. Sandra has written articles for Your Genealogy Today, FGS Forum, Internet Genealogy, and Stirpes in addition to several society newsletters. She was recognized with the Award of Merit by FGS for her work on the FGS 2014 Conference; Volunteer of the Year and Award of Merit by DGS. She has a business degree from the University of Memphis and served as Vice President of Marketing and a marketing consultant for several technology companies.
