BUILDING AND GROUNDS UPDATE Repairs are coming along to the interior of the Museum The Historical Trackers, a Center Elementary group of students, donated $600 toward the purchase of a flat file at the Museum. A grant from Texas Historical Commission helped pay the remainder of the $890 bill. The flat files will allow the Society to archive large items such as photos, maps, and documents. Shelby Savings Bank today donated $500 for continued renovations to the interior of the Museum. Our fund raising is at 36% of the $25,000 goal for 1999. One more exhibit room is almost complete. Floors are being sanded by volunteers this week. Walls, ceiling and trim are complete. Several large private collections were recently donated to the Museum. We need volunteers to help go through these collections and start accessioning them into the Society's collection. Donation may be sent to SCHS Treasurer PO Box 1542 Center, TX 75935 UPDATE on WEB PAGE We have now moved into the 21st Century! www.panola.cc.tx.us/~schs email address is [email protected] The Society will do research for $5 per hour on genealogy plus associated costs... coping and mailing. All money raised goes for up keep of the Library, Museum and collections SHELBY COUNTY HISTORY BOOK No more BOOKS are left since early in 1998. We have discussed reordering them through another publisher. The Shelby County Historical COMMISSION was the organization that originally put the book together under the guidance of John Reagan Harris. Mr. Harris died earlier this year. The last word we had on the book was that it would cost ~$100 each with a minimum order of 100. The Society is contemplating taking orders with payment attached. If we can get 100 orders in six months we will do it, if not the money would be returned. ALL OF THIS IS STILL UNDER CONSIDERATION. Also there has been talk on a Vol II. Shelby County History Book Anyone wanting to donate some time in researching and compiling information? SUMMER WORKERS! Through DETGO and JTPA the Society will be utilizing summer students (2) to help in the daily up keep of the Museum. These are high school students from area High Schools. They will provide us with services while we provide a learning atmosphere with on-the-job-training. HANDBOOK OF TEXAS is ONLINE http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/ This is a great resource!
