TO CAROLYN MARRIOTT or anyone else interested in WWI draft registrations: Dear Carolyn, The World War I draft records came available about 3 years ago. I don't know where you live but the first to have the complete set within reasonable range of Shelby County was the Regional National Archives in Fort Worth, Texas. Now, the Dallas Public Library on Young St. (and for some time) has had them. Undoubtably, the Clayton Library in Houston probably has them and POSSIBLY the Shreve Memorial Library in Shreveport. If these are not convenient, any LDS church will be glad to order them for you to their location. Yes, the men were red-blooded back then and draft registration was required. If they registered my maternal grandfather in the Village of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana--a scrapping 500 souls--then they PROBABLY registered your ancestor if he qualified by age. As in other wars, registration didn't guarantee that he served. This Selective Service Act was passed in May 1917; There are 24,000,000 cards of men who registered (23% of the population in 1918). As I stated above, not all of those that registered served. Conversely, not all of those who DID serve registered for the draft. There were three registrations, the first on June 5, 1917 with a minimum age of 21. At the 3rd registration on Sept. 12, 1918, the age category was 18-45. The twelve items (paraphrased) on the registration are: 1. name in full, age in yrs. 2. home address 3. date of birth 4. type of citizen in regard to natural born, etc. 5. Where were you born? 6. If not a citizen, of what country are you a citizen? 7. What is your present trade, occupation or other? 8. By whom employed? Where employed? 9. Have you a child, sister, brother, etc. under 12 yrs? 10.Married or single? Race (specify which) 11. What military service have you had? Rank? Branch? etc. 12. Do you claim exemption from draft? specify grounds signature of registrant The registrar then made a report of 3 items: 1. Tall, medium or short Slender, medium or stout 2. Color of eyes Color of hair 3. Has person lost arm, leg, sight, etc.? signature of registrar, precinct, county, city, state, date I hope that this helps you with your quest.
