This was very common in the old days when a Mason would move across country. As communication methods were so poor, he would simply withdraw his membership from a Lodge, for instance in North Carolina, and head west, and when he settled, present his dimit, dimmit, demit, etc., to a new Lodge, and petition for afilliation there. This is normally not done nowadays. A Mason usually applies for a plural or dual membership in a second Lodge and might eventually withdraw his membership from the previous one.
