    3. In response to Sandra's question about naming practices: A very good book on research, UNPUZZLING YOUR PAST by Emily Anne Croom, has a whole chapter on names with some very good information. Specifically on how families name their children, Croom says that practices vary from time to time. In the 18th and 19th centuries it went like this: Eldest son------often named fo rthe father's father 2nd son----------for mother's father 3rd son----------for the father 4th son----------for father's eldest brother Eldest daugther------for the mother's mother 2nd daughter-------for the father's mother 3rd daughter--------for the mother 4th daughter--------for the mother's eldest sister She cautions that in the USA, the pattern may be considered a clue, but not a rule.
